A Cook County jury found failed Empire actor Jussie Smollett guilty on five of the six charges stemmed from the fake hate crime he committed in January 2019.
Chicago decided to move forward with its original lawsuit against Smollett to recover the money it spent on police overtime and resources.
Brothers Abimbola and Olabingo Osundario claimed Smollett paid them $3,500 to stage the fake crime and provided them with the lines to yell.
Smollett insisted he is still the victim of a hate crime and paid the brothers for diet and exercise plans.
The lawsuit is for $130,105.15 and $1,000 “for each false statement he made to the city, in addition to three times the amount of the damages that the city sustained, as well as litigation and collection costs, and attorneys’ fees.”
