NBC Says Dropping Golden Globes in 2022 Due To Lack of Diversity

The ratings for Hollywood awards shows are down across the board. It seems like the only people who are still watching are folks who work in the industry and entertainment reporters.

Yet NBC is claiming that they won’t carry the Golden Globe Awards next year because of its lack of a commitment to diversity. Right.

It definitely has absolutely nothing to do with the show’s abysmal ratings over the last few years.

Sara Fischer reports at Axios:

NBC won’t air Golden Globes in backlash against hosting groupNBC said Monday it won’t air the Golden Globes next year following the fallout around the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the show each year and is battling criticism that it’s not committed enough to diversity. Why it matters: The network has been airing the event exclusively for decades. Its decision to pull back speaks to how big the backlash against the group has become. What they’re saying: “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said, per Deadline.“However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

Here’s a reminder of how the Golden Globes show did in the ratings back in March.

Nicholas Rice reported at People:

2021 Golden Globes Suffer a 64% Ratings Plunge amid HFPA Controversy and the COVID-19 PandemicThe 2021 Golden Globes did not fare well in the ratings.Sunday night’s ceremony garnered 6.9 million viewers, down 64% from the prior year’s show, according to a report from the Associated Press, that cited Nielsen Holdings.Last year’s ceremony, which took place ahead of lockdowns related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, reached 18.4 million viewers, the outlet added. The last time the Golden Globes had such a low viewing audience was back in 2008 during the writer’s strike. Instead of the typical star-studded event, a televised press conference announcing the winners took place, drawing in 6 million viewers, the AP reported.

But yeah, it’s all about diversity…

The more left-wing, political, and preachy these shows get, the fewer people tune in, and Hollywood refuses to understand this.
