Pretzel tax logic

Saving Obamacare by calling a penalty a tax has created all sorts of political contortions.

What if the Supreme Court had called a dog a cat, would we then be required to call a dog a cat, particularly if it were better for us?

That’s where we are right now.  Properly characterizing the...

That $3 dinner with Obama may cost you hundreds in taxes

I have highlighted before the $5 and then $3 dinner raffles run by Obama to get names for his fundraising list.  Other candidates have used such gimmicks, but Obama by far has been the most aggressive, running them for months.

Technically, these raffles are “sweepstakes” because you can enter without paying anything,...

A reader writes:

Not sure if you have something planned for tax day, but thought you’d like a little perspective from the private sector. If you do use it, please hold back our names – a few of my clients are liberals!

Romney’s been down this tax return road before, and it’s a dead end

Is this really happening again?  Is Mitt Romney refusing, even assuming he is the nominee which looks likely, to release any more tax returns?

Romney released his 2010 return and projections for 2011 only after a disastrous couple of weeks of refusing to do so.  I predicted at the start that his position ...

Herman Cain’s Sick of Stimulus website has released a new web ad.

It’s right up there with the “greats” of web ads.  (h/t Robert Costa, who says he is speechless.)

Update:  This reaction from one of the people behind the Rush boycott actually is quite unintentionally funny:

And, Cain protests temporary removal of controversial rabbit...

If only Obama could get over 50%, he’d have a lock on re-election:

Update:  Remember, because of the implicit marginal rate, people in this category face huge financial disincentives to earning more money.

Caterpillar has ruled out building a planned new plant in Illinois due to the negative business climate, via AP:

Some of the best YouTube videos are the ones you find when you are looking for something else.

And I think this is a pretty good one for three reasons.

First, how great is it to see this piece of history?  Second, it highlights the argument over tax cuts as a means...

Chris Christie on the Today Show this morning:

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, one of Mitt Romney’s most popular and visible surrogates, said Wednesday the Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor should release his tax returns as soon as they’re available.

Tax return slippery slope

I saw this coming from a mile away.

Mitt Romney’s original position that he would not release his income tax returns, a position he held to for several weeks, now is slipping.

At the debate last night Romney gave a convoluted answer that he “probably” would release the tax returns in April —...

The second Mitt Romney announced he would not release his income tax returns if he becomes nominee I predicted it would not stand because the refusal would, at a minimum, create a major distraction.  It’s part of a larger problem with secrecy which will haunt Romney if he is the nominee.

The most likely...

Since 2008 Obama has pursued a class warfare agenda, narrowing his focus over time from the Top 5% to the Top 2% to the Top 1%.  This year Obama has narrowed his focus even further, singling out those millionaires and billionaires who pay a lower tax rate than their secretaries.
