White House Offers up Dreamer Amnesty Deal

White House Offers up Dreamer Amnesty Deal

1.8 million would receive pathway to citizenship, PLUS could bring in immediate family members, in exchange for The Wall, end of chain migration

https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/728297587418247168?lang=en

Politico reported Thursday afternoon that the White House offered an immigration plan to Congress.

The White House plan satisfies Democrat Dreamer demands in exchange for a $25 billion fund to construct and secure the southern border, as well as a plan to curtail chain migration.

1.8 million Dreamers (individuals brought to the US by their parents without legal status) would receive legal status. The visa lottery would conclude and an individual would still be able to sponsor their immediate family members, but not extended family, according to details reported by Politico.

The White House believes their plan meets the demands of both parties.

In a call with Republican Hill staffers Thursday afternoon, a senior White House official outlined a one-page framework. The official called the new proposal “a compromise position that we believe… will get 60 votes in the Senate” and “a framework that ultimately will lead to passage of a law.”

The official told Republican staffers that the White House proposal would establish a $25 billion trust fund for a border defense system, including a wall along the Mexican border — a key campaign promise made by President Donald Trump that he has repeatedly indicated must be included in a final deal. That money would also go toward technology and security at the Canadian border.

The framework also eliminates the visa lottery and curbs U.S. migration by extended families, a fundamental change to existing immigration policy. New citizens would be able to sponsor their immediate families — spouses and children — to legally enter the country, but other relatives would be excluded.

Democrats failed to secure any substantive reform to President Obama’s extra-legal program DACA during budget negotiations, sparking protests nationwide.

Senate Minority Leader Schumer later claimed he’d withdrawn funding for The Wall from negotiations, claims the White House rebuffed.

Democrats have long-blamed Republicans for holding hostage any substantive immigration reform, particularly in regards to Dreamers.

Trump being the first to offer a plan to codify legal status for Dreamers pulls the teeth right out of Democrat rhetoric. If legislation is introduced mirroring the White House plan, Democrats would be put in a position to vote against legal status for Dreamers or give Republicans what they want on The Wall.

This is brilliant. Is Trump giving away too much? Oh, Certainly.

but the Dems can NEVER agree to it. Even though from their POV it’s a mouthwatering deal, giving them everything they most fervently desire – Schumer and the dems are going to shoot it down. Watch them.

Why? Because the base will go crazy if Schumer gives Trump a win on anything, and because Trump has now turned Schumer’s best play into the Trump Position, Schumer now HAS to fight it, and he has to kill it.

And Trump is going to get the credit for having gone all the way out there and really, seriously, tried to negotiate, in complete good faith – and yet he isn’t going to have to actually sign it into law because he can count on Chuckie killing it for him.

Like I said, this is brilliant.

    Wow. That’s just nuts.

Why the hell would any Deemocrat not eat this up? Everything for DACA AND DREAMERS? They win.

Tom Servo in reply to Ragspierre. | January 25, 2018 at 5:53 pm

Watch – Schumer is going to go all out and kill this proposal. He has no choice. He is trapped.

You are right, that this is nuts, but that’s the state of Dem politics today. It has become so completely insane that the only sane move is to expect them to do insane things.

Ragspierre in reply to Tom Servo. | January 25, 2018 at 6:21 pm

        “Trapped…!?!?!” By WHAT? Success?

Schumer is not a stupid man (yes, yes, we all do stupid things). He knows that stroking Der Donald is the surest of all possible ways to win with him. Look at the whole “Chuck and Nancy” farce!

IF you think he’d shy away from letting T-rump gloat in order to get all this, you’re dreaming.

        100% Correct Tom!

        That’s why it’s called “Negotiation*.”

Bloody Chucky would rather the Democrat Party die than to concede even 1 point to Trump. Chucky and the Dems are literally Hilter in the bunker on April 30, 1945.

*”The important thing to remember is that negotiation is not necessarily adversarial; it often is a strategic process. The objective is to come up with an agreement that benefits all parties. Sometimes parties must give up some things, but this is indeed part of the negotiation, and giving something up frequently allows for gains in other areas of the negotiation.

The best negotiators prepare themselves by studying the situation extensively before entering the negotiating room. They also consider deadlines, timing, cultural expectations, personalities, and the distribution of information in their negotiating strategies.” – https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/negotiation

Any sort of amnesty plan isn’t “brilliant”. Trump’s first plan in 2015 was the Jeff Flake/Luis Gutierrez “touchback” amnesty. He’s repeatedly indicated he wants to legalize millions of illegal aliens.

Yet, you’re fantastically claiming Trump is both very smart and truly opposes amnesty.

If that were the case, then he’d already know the smart, highly effective arguments against amnesty that’d undercut the Dems to their base and he’d be making those arguments.

If Trump’s super double secret goal is undercutting the Dems, then he could do it easily just by talking. Yet, he isn’t doing that. Trump is in effect saying amnesty is a good thing. Trump isn’t pointing out all the ways it’s a bad thing.

In case anyone puts the USA before Trump, then help stop his amnesty. You can do that by forcing Trump proxies to come out against it. If his proxies won’t support him, Trump will be marginalized. You can just do that over amnesty if you want and support him on other things. If Trump’s proxies see amnesty as a threat to their careers, they’ll do everything they can to stop it. See my Twitter for my attempts to do that.

Tom Servo in reply to 24AheadDotCom. | January 25, 2018 at 6:15 pm

I understand your thoughts, but that’s because not many people understand Alinsky as intuitively as Trump does. (And I could just as easily point to Sun Tzu for the reasoning)

They both teach that the way to victory is to seize the enemies strength and make it your own, thus confusing and neutralizing the enemy. In this case, the enemies strength is their demand for mercy for the poor little childrens that were brought here for no fault of their own. Trump has just seized that position, now it is Trump who has the emotionally resonant merciful looking position in this debate. The Dems just lost it, and with it they have lost all of their strength in this battle.

Now the Dems are the ones who have to deny merciful treatment to the poor little childrens they’ve been talking about. And they have to do that, because otherwise, by doing a big deal with Trump, they will cut the heart out of “The Resistance” that they are counting on to give them a huge turnout in this falls elections. And if they lose this falls elections, they’re going to lose the 2020 elections, as Trump goes from strength to strength.

Worrying about this one bill is like worrying about a single battle, without realizing that Trump is playing to win the entire War. Right here, right now.

great explanation. I think you are absolutely right. Thanks.

RE: “The Dems just lost it…..

…and with it they have lost all of their strength in this battle.

        AMEN AND AMEN!

Trump, assisted by his cultists, has made the GOP position “amnesty + security”. That’s despite amnesty being incredibly bad for the USA. The correct stance should be “no amnesty + security”, but that’s not what Trump’s doing.

Amnesty would harm U.S. workers, U.S. students, *and* foreign countries. If most in the Dem base knew that (something Trump could easily bring about), many of them would turn against amnesty.

Many or most in the Dem base aren’t going to support something that harms U.S. workers, U.S. students, *and* foreign countries. And, Dem leaders aren’t going to push something that many or most in their base will hold against them.

Are there smart arguments against amnesty, yes or no?

Is Trump making them, yes or no?

          MarkSmith in reply to 24AheadDotCom. | January 26, 2018 at 12:11 am

In a perfect world that makes sense, but if given a choice of 6% of the total illegals vs 100%, I will take the 6%. In the end they are going to still be here.

There is a win/win here. Absolutes are not going to win here.

I see this as a great play for 2018 mid-term. Especially when the Russian bit falls apart.

Connivin Caniff in reply to 24AheadDotCom. | January 25, 2018 at 9:08 pm

I agree. Instead talking about amnesty, Trump should be advocating Chain Deportation, where we throw out these illegal “dreamers” along with their illegal parents, uncles, second cousins, and theirs friends twice-or-more-already-removed. Then we can replace these mooching uninvited guests with legitimate, skilled applicants who have been waiting for years to really become Americans.

iconotastic in reply to Tom Servo. | January 25, 2018 at 7:18 pm

Fascinating scenario. We will learn a lot about the Democrat strategy in the next 10 months from the decision made here. Also recognize that this is just another round of negotiations. The final deal may be quite different from what we see now.

But, being the bad person I am, I really want to see a Democrat vote for a bill containing funding for the Wall. The symbolism will entertain me for a few days.

I was surprised by this proposed deal but I agree it is brilliant. It is very generous to the DACA/Dreamer crowd, has great potential for getting a deal done plus we get our wall. Problems for future illegal immigration gone; illegals here now can assimilate. Brilliant plan it will gain traction.

“Over a period of 10 to 12 years,” Mr. Trump said, “somebody does a great job, they work hard — that gives incentive to do a great job. Whatever they’re doing, if they do a great job, I think it’s a nice thing to have the incentive of, after a period of years, being able to become a citizen.”…

Yeeeeeeeup. Just as I’ve said. Not only amnesty, but a path to citizenship. Everyone who has listened to T-rump knew this. Well, if they retained any ability to think clearly.

It’s a good thing Rags doesn’t have to, you know, actually negotiate.

I understand. You’re crushed by being a tool for so long.

So you lash out at people who warned you for many, many months. It’s a little pathological, but understandable.

iconotastic in reply to Ragspierre. | January 25, 2018 at 7:25 pm

True, but I like to distinguish between a general amnesty and an amnesty for people brought to the USA as children. And if we can get some concessions out of it–chain migration and mandatory e-verify are high on my personal list–then the pill (to me) is not too bitter to swallow.

Also, I think that most independents support a path to citizenship for this particular category of illegal alien. I like to think there is some value in taking that issue away from Democrats in upcoming elections.

Would like to remove the anchor baby issue also. Part of deal.. an amendment ending this… now that would be good addition.

So Obama won?

Immigration reform is what GOPers have been asking for for years; this seems like a solid strategy IMO.

Ragspierre in reply to healthguyfsu. | January 25, 2018 at 5:56 pm

IF you mean Gramnasty…!!! What did that gaggle want that isn’t here?

Even if you shorten the “chain” that’s still a YUGE number of people who come here under this “idea”. All the folks back home can STILL start the process of immigrating here legally, and they’ll have a support group in place.

Let me repeat the same warning again. Trump is a pragmatist. And, his priorities are not necessarily those of conservatives.

Trump wants to increase the US economy by doing a number of things. One of those is to increase the number of good paying jobs. To do this, he wants to curtail illegal immigration as well as the nearly unfettered lawful immigration of extended families. Securing this nation’s borders allows the country to control illegal immigration as well as curtailing smuggling of contraband. Limiting chain migration allows the country to better choose who enters and remains here. And, if he is serious about these remarks, he apparently sees trading 3 million immigration positions for the ability to better keep people out, to be worth it.

What this does is force the Dems on-board with the Trump plan for immigration. They can board the Trump train and “save” the dreamers or derail the train and have Trump spread his hands and say, “I tried to save the dreamers. I can’t do it without Congress. And, the Democrats derailed the freedom train, not me. Sorry.” Now, it is a win for Trump.

Tom Servo in reply to Mac45. | January 25, 2018 at 6:06 pm

You got it – if this was a chess match, the move Trump just pulled would be called a fork. If they decide to go for what they want (path to citizenship) then they have to agree to give Trump all of the credit for having negotiated a solution to the situation by himself. (and their base will be incredibly outraged and be picketing Schumer’s house for the rest of the year, because Resistance!!!”)

BUT if Schumer kills the bill, then he has to vote against the dreamers and kill their best chance of ever getting legalized – and Trump will still get the credit for having offered to give up so much!

Of course Schumer should agree to this – but I don’t believe that his base will let him do it.

And remember how Trump negotiates – “okay, you didn’t take it, now that offer is off the table, this one isn’t as good, you want to take it before it’s off the table too?”

Ragspierre in reply to Tom Servo. | January 25, 2018 at 6:14 pm

T-rump has ALREADY signaled that a pathway to citizenship is OK by him.

Schumer and the Deemocrats play long ball. They can leave the wall bleaching in the sun, and bring back provisions they like to immigration law next time the pendulum swings to them…and it will.

Tom Servo in reply to Ragspierre. | January 25, 2018 at 6:20 pm

We have a real world test we can apply to this question now, do we not?

You say that Schumer and the Dems will jump on this because it is everything that they wanted and could reasonably have gotten. I agree that they *should* do that.

But I say that they will kill this proposal, and prevent any agreement at all, because their political beliefs and motivations have now become literally insane. And because of that, they are now about to undertake an insane and self destructive course of action.

It isn’t very often where we get to see a real world test of ideas like this. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

The difference between your two positions is whether or not you believe the democrats want a deal.

        Your response assumes they do.

The original point assumes that they were staking out a position to use as leverage, but specifically want to avoid any deal because then they lose the position and the leverage.

The question is whether of not they are negotiating in good or bad faith.

Without weighting the likely outcome it should be agreeable that both positions are possible.

          Arminius in reply to f2000. | January 25, 2018 at 7:22 pm

The Dems don’t want a deal. They wanted to merely fleece us for the first round. Trump just signed us up to be skinned alive.

Schumer and the Dems could pass an immigration bill to grant amnesty to anyone that they want, if they retake the House and Senate and the WH. They could have under Obama. They never did. Why? The answer is the polls. The Dems would love to grant citizenship to the 11-20 million illegals here now. They would like to bring in another 20 million to swell the Democrat voter ranks even more. However, their constituents, especially their base don’t want that anymore than Republican constituents do. Illegals compete with citizens for jobs, especially with the lower income people who make up a large portion of the Dem base. Black Democrats hate illegal immigration.

Will Schumer take Trump’s offer? Maybe. But he is far more likely to find a reason to turn it down. Will the Republicans get on-board to pass amnesty? Maybe. But this is even less likely. Remember, Trump does not control the Republican Party. In fact, he has an adversarial relationship with that body.

Personally, I am not going to get too excited about this, until i see how it progresses. I realize that some people are firmly convinced that Trump is stupid and that the professional politicians in the Congress, and especially the Democrat party, are brilliant. And therefor Trump will end up giving away not just the cow, but the whole farm, for a handful of beans. We’ll just have to wait to see if this is true.

After a year, you cant commit to Trump’s talents?

And you cant commit to the democrats (led by klinton) being dumb?

klinton is out, so we’ll have to see who soros chooses as the new face of the left.

So, it turns out The Donald is just another lying politician!

I don’t think I like this deal.

Close The Fed | January 25, 2018 at 7:11 pm

EXCEPT FOR PERHAPS THE 700,000 DACA RECIPIENTS, the rest of the illegal aliens can make up all the papers they want or buy them, stating there were here on X date, pick any date.

Which means, the numbers are all guesses, and will invite another wave of illegal aliens who will claim they’ve been here since X. And we don’t have the manpower to vet them.

It’s all a big stinking lie.

I want to secede. I’m sick of being told I have no freedom and illegal aliens can do ANYTHING!!! and stay.

Why wouldn’t the Dems take this. They get everything they want know in return for a list of border security items they can kill whenever they retake the House and Senate. Trump just gave everything away up front and all he asks for in return is an I.O.U. the Dems will never make good on.

“The official told Republican staffers that the White House proposal would establish a $25 billion trust fund for a border defense system, including a wall along the Mexican border — a key campaign promise made by President Donald Trump that he has repeatedly indicated must be included in a final deal.”

Oh, goody, a trust fund just like the Social Security trust fund. How’s that working out for you, fellow citizens? Although, that word citizen has now been rendered meaningless. Just like Social Security, you either get the money now or you’ll never see it. “Oh, that trust fund?” the next Dem majority leader will say, “We spent that on LGBT teen centers throughout south Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Kali. That’s what we meant by “border security.” When LGBT youth cross the border we want them to feel secure when they finally get here. Now we’re going to cancel the whole thing.”

This is why, although not a Never-Trumper, I could never really get fully on board the Trump train. At heart he’s what he’s always been. A New York liberal.

I thought the key promise was Trump would actually build the wall. Not establish a stupid trust fund. Does anyone remember the key promise being a trust fund?

buckeyeminuteman in reply to Arminius. | January 26, 2018 at 8:06 am

Nope. I thought he was going to create millions of jobs tearing down mosques. Then use all the best bricks to build a wall, dip it in gold and make Mexico pay for it all!

Ugh. Citizenship for dreamers is a mistake and allowing the very people who violated US law by sneaking them across the border to stay is a huge mistake. Green cards for dreamers, deportation for their parents.

Look, I am no more happy about this than any of you all. but look at it pragmatically.

You cant send packing teen and twenties that have been here since grade school, it would be no different than dumping them in the woods a thousand miles from no where and telling them survive or die.

You cant deport parents of children that were born in America. Like it or not the children born in America are citizens, they need their parents.

Flame me hate me but the above are moral facts that we just have to accept. They are here and most of them are not going anywhere.

With that, if we can trade a way for them to become productive members of society living openly, against protecting our borders and preventing more from coming in, I am all for it.

I agree that each did nothing but make it more inviting to the next batch.

My thing is the wall. If we can build a barrier that prevents people from crossing easily then i can accept that. I also think that part of the requirements for amnesty and citizenship need to be very tightly aligned to the construction of the wall.

I guess that would explain the flood of hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied minors flowing across the border for the past few years, huh?

Thanks for cluing me in. I never would have figured that out.

Also, I’m thinking of moving to Kurdistan. Which relatively speaking will be a first world country compared to remnants of the shredded carcass of what used to be the United States of America.

rdmdawg in reply to starride. | January 25, 2018 at 7:58 pm

“You cant send packing teen and twenties that have been here since grade school”

We gave them, free of charge, the benefits of a first-world culture to grow up in, a first-world education, political stability, the best medical care you can find, they’re clothed and fed. On what planet do we have a moral imperative to allow them to stay? You speak as if we somehow wronged these people somehow *owe* them something now. If you ask me, if we sent them back now, they’re *still* getting the best out of this deal.

So, yes, you can send them packing, and most are into their 20s or even 30s by now, but either way, if they havn’t made the slightest effort to get legal by now, even if it means returning to their country of origin and applying for legal immigration, then we really don’t want them here any longer.

Arminius in reply to rdmdawg. | January 25, 2018 at 10:03 pm

Also, at least a large plurality of them didn’t come here as babes in their mothers arms. A lot of them came here as technically minors, unaccompanied minors and old enough to be charged as adults for their crimes. But of course sanctuary city DAs would never charge them as adults, or even charge them with a felony when they pistol whip an elderly woman to steal her purse because that would make them deportable.

The whole hagiography of the so-called “DREAMers” reminds me of Trayvon Martin. The MSM wanted everyone to believe Zimmerman had gunned down 11 y.o. innocent, smiling Trayvon in the picture they kept showing. Not 17 y.o. Trayvon flipping everyone the bird with both hands and the MMA-style beat downs as shown on the cell phone videos.

The Democrats are already calling this dead on arrival. They want these people voting in the next election. They want citizenship and voting rights immediately.

notamemberofanyorganizedpolicital in reply to boulder. | January 25, 2018 at 10:31 pm

They’ve “already” been voting in the past several elections – although illegally…….

Up date, The ACLU is calling the proposal hateful white supremacist legislature.

Mark Levin is not having it.

Stories like this are worthless. They’re the same old crap we’ve been seeing since Trump announced his candidacy. And from Politico, we’d expect nothing less. Propaganda, misdirection, rampant stupidity and the urgent need to believe. Push “1” for hysteria, push “2” for existential despair, push “3” for desperation

Legal status and path to citizenship are not equivalents, any more than immigrant is a harmless synonym for unassimilatable alien invader. The difference is not a detail, it’s vital. So, how do the D’rats and the NeverTrumpettes and the Progressives use this? They report what Trump says, but discuss it—even obsess about it—in different terms. Change the words just a bit, “innocently” assume they mean something just a little bit different … and all of a sudden, a harmless observation that, say, women will put up with aggressive behavior from a rich and famous man that they’d never tolerate from an ordinary everyday putz becomes an admission of serial sexual abuse. They keep trying this tactic, over and over and over … and people who shouldn’t be quite stupid enough to fall for it do fall for it, over and over and over. And what inspires this serial gullibility? Probably Trump Derangement Syndrome, as usual.

The actual words quoted say something totally obvious, exactly what Trump has clearly been building toward since the Schumer Shutdown loomed on the horizon. Trump is manuevering the D’rats into a position in which they are the ones blocking legal protection of Dreamers (or DACAs—the principle is identical). This is because, again, legal status and amnesty have nothing to do with each other. Legal status relieves all the pressure to be sympathetic to those po’ lil’ tykes who were brought over the border as young ‘uns, and know no other country than the US. A legal status such as “resident alien” solves this problem completely. And it’s of no interest to the D’rats. They don’t want foreigners, they want voters. They need voters. This is a matter of survival to a party which actively alienates more and more genuine Americans every day.

Making this all explicit put the D’rats on the spot. Superficially, it sounds like an offer which gives them what they want, but it isn’t—not even close. But they can’t admit that. It’s an excellent move by Trump, but I won’t call it “brilliant” because by now it should be totally obvious. An obvious move isn’t “brilliant”, so I’ll just stick with “excellent”. If the D’rats swallow it, they get stuck with a noisy bunch which will continue to harass Schumer at home and in his office, funding for The Wall and a bunch of other stuff they hate, and no new voters via amnesty, endless chain immigration, or the Visa Lottery of Doom. If the D’rats block it, the protests will continue, and they’ll be the target. And the President doesn’t have to depend on the Republican Congress to make any of this happen. Maybe that part is brilliant.

Of course if Comrade Schumer et al block it, the President still doesn’t get his wall. That just means the fight continues. I expect the endless wailing and gnashing of teeth will continue as well.

Can we all start calling them “unassimilatable alien invaders” now?

Not even that: we just need a simple alogrithm on a loop:

“trump is bad even when trump is good. Repeat.”

Mr. Establishment just threw open the Overton Window to amnesty.

The more canny Deemocrats with presidential ambitions are going to move on this opening.

The wall was supposed to be paid for by Mexico. Not by me in exchange for millions of illegals. I get Trump is posturing, but it wasn’t what I voted for.

Did you really just vote on a mexican paid for wall? Are you sure that was the ONLY thing you voted on? For most rational adults getting a wall is the end goal and for most rational adults the only goal.

Yet for the unhinged thats not good enough. They WANT something else to use as justification for their trump derangement. I bet if the wall was paid for by Mexico you would be whining your tits off that its American tax dollars paying for it anyway because its money being generated by illegal mexicans in America!

I’m being facetious. I understand Mexico isn’t going to directly pay for. I know we would be paying for it. But giving amnesty to illegals wasn’t part of the campaign stumping.
