Obama drains $500M From Zika response to U.N. Climate Fund
Difference between Obama and a mosquito? One is a flying bloodsucker, and the other is an insect.
In February, President Obama said we should not “panic over Zika.”
At the same time, he asked Congress for $1.8 billion in funding for the resources to combat the Zika virus, the pathogen spreading rapidly through the Americas that can cause birth defects and neurological problems. In a rare display of fiscal restraint, Congress granted $622 million (mainly from unused Ebola response money).
However, as negotiations continue for even more Zika funding between these two branches of government, it seems that $500 million of those taxpayer dollars initially allotted now sits in the coffers of the United Nations.
The Obama administration siphoned $500 million that could have gone toward combating the Zika virus into a United Nations effort aimed at mitigating climate change.
Sen. James Lankford (R., Okla.) wrote in an op-ed published in the Daily Signal that the Senate last year granted Obama the authority to pay for a response to Zika, but his administration chose instead to allocate those funds toward the U.N.’s Green Climate Fund.
As a reminder, that $500 million is the first installment of $3 billion that Obama agreed to turn over as part of the UN Paris climate conference deal.
Let’s do a little risk assessment to determine if that money was well spent!
Today’s Zika news includes the following:
- Zika has blanketed three-quarters of Puerto Rico over the past six months, and health authorities expect it to keep spreading now that it is prime mosquito season. It is estimate that one-quarter of the island’s population will be infected by the time that season is over.
- There are currently 189 recorded cases of the Zika virus in New York State, including one just reported in the state capital of Albany.
- In Jamaica, all pregnant women are to be tested for the virus.
Today’s climate change/global warming news:
- Weather observers misread wind speeds, skewing a major hazards database.
- Lake Chad’s shrinkage, once tied to the effects of recent global warming, has been known since 1899 and is related to farming and irrigation practices.
- Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude E. Walker has withdrawn his subpoena of the Competitive Enterprise Institute after a rash of criticism over his investigation into climate change dissenters.
Today’s United Nations news completes the data set: Anders Kompass, who worked as director of field operations at the UN human rights office, has resigned after the organization did not hold senior officials accountable for sexual abuses of children by the organization’s workers.
Clearly, Zika is the larger threat to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in this country than climate change.
Therefore, given Obama’s standard calculations, there should be little surprise that American money is being diverted to fund corrupt, abusive, foreign bureaucrats.
Republican lawmakers introduced legislation in May to block the Obama administration’s funding of last year’s Paris climate deal. Perhaps the Republicans in Congress can stop their Trump-oriented hysteria long enough to get this bill the votes it needs for passage?
Or maybe the Republicans could get creative and divert the monies from Obama’s travel funds to Zika? Surely the amount available will be enough to wipe the disease off the face of the Earth!

Obama is an anti-American traitor and nothing more with Hillary being worse than him if she is to win. But I do not support Trump either.
Plus the insect is easier to get rid of …
And not married to another parasite.
Oh, yeah. Good one!
Perhaps somebody has mis-reported this, and the funds are flowing FROM the Climate Change category to the more-specific Zika category.
The Zika story, after all, is the story of an outbreak of a parasite carried by a tiny, flying insect whose population and location may have changed, due to a shift in weather conditions. It seems to me that our Climate Change funds are ideally suited to be used to deal with this problem.
The original report is here:

“You might ask—so what did the administration spend the infectious disease money on earlier this year?
You guessed it… climate change.
In March, President Obama gave the United Nations $500 million out of an account under bilateral economic assistance to fund the U.N.’s Green Climate Fund.”
Furthermore: Even if it landed in a UN Zika Fund, I would argue that American tax dollars designated for Zika response should be spent by American entities for the protection of our nation the highest priority. I just don’t get the sense the USA is terribly important to UN bureaucrats.
Unfortunately the USA isn’t terribly important to US bureaucrats either.
Mariner, you hit the nail on the head.
In a word, no. The probability of the current administration diverting money from a popular public health initiative in order to pay off their AGW flunkies is MUCH higher than believing any UN program which flacks climate change will spend more than a few pennies on swatting bugs.
I’m so sick and tired of the Republican congress giving Obama blank checks.
Actually, Congress if fighting the Obama administration over how much money to appropriate for the Zika initiative. And Obama turning over part of the Zika funds already approved to the UN is one EXTREMELY good reason why Congress should resist any more funding from Obama. And Congress should scream loudly about the misappropriation of funds that Obama is engaging in.
…but they won’t.
Because they have showed themselves to be EVERY BIT AS MALEVOLENT as dear leader.
We need rope, and lamp posts. Right by the reflecting pool.
WTF does the UN do for “climate change,” anyway? Bet the AC in that building is cranked up 24/7/365.
Please just let me know when Congress actually DOES something in response. I mean, other than rolling over on their backs like the cowardly dogs they are.
Don’t hold your breath if your expecting the GOP to do much about the way Obama is waisting our tax dollars. Don’t forget the Rinos lead by Paul Ryan gave Obama everthing and more of what he asked for. Losers like Ryan talk about doing something but when it comes to actions, he’s nothing but a bag of hot air. this is why they don’t like Trump.
When I worked as a government subcontractor, I was constantly seeing wars develop between bureaucrats for spending from one pot of money on another project. At time it lead to people being terminated, lawsuits and even the restructuring of the government contract.

Does Obama even have the authority to arbitrarily spend money from one program on something else completely different without Congressional approval?
How is it that Tyrant Obama the Liar can spend money on any project he desires ignoring the directives of Congress? Are the Republicans to lazy to make this illegal?
