Obama Lashes Out, Uses Oregon Mass Shooting as Prop for Gun Control

GUNMAN IDENTIFIED

At least 10 people were murdered today when a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

According to authorities, the shooter was a 20 year old man. They haven’t released his name, or any other information about him, but officials did confirm that he is dead. Now, investigators are looking at social media posts from as early as last night trying to figure out more about the shooter, and what motivated him to kill.

More from CNN:

According to the source close to the investigation, authorities are looking at social media posts between a person they believe may have been the shooter, and others.

The conversation happened Wednesday night on 4chan.

In it, the writer talks about planning to carry out a shooting. Others egg him on, giving him suggestions on how to do it, and the type of weapons to use.

The responses are mixed — with some users characterizing the would-be gunman as a pathetic loser. Others called him a twisted hero.

In the posts, there is a reference to the UC Santa Barbara shooter, who wrote a manifesto and videoed himself before opening fire a year ago.

“This is the only time I’ll ever be in the news. I’m so insignificant,” reads an apparent post by the would-be Oregon gunman.

During a press conference, President Obama seized the opportunity to initiate another outright push for more gun control legislation, saying, “somehow, this has become routine.”

Watch:

Mid-rant, Obama demanded that the media put terror deaths against gun deaths. The media, of course, obliged:

We’ll post more information here as it comes available. Reports out of Oregon are slow in coming, and major media sources have explained that this is because Roseburg is fairly isolated from major population centers.

***Updates***

More on Obama’s anti-gun rant…

(Yes, he did.)

HUGE point here. Huge. Obama took to the podium and lectured the nation on its apparent love and appetite for violence without knowing the exact circumstances of what happened in Oregon today. If he had done this knowing the full fact pattern it would have been bad enough; but the blatant agenda-pushing he engaged in today, in his official capacity, was beyond the pale.

It looks like earlier reports were true—Oregon gunman singled out Christians during rampage:

A woman who claimed to have a grandmother inside a writing class in Snyder Hall, where a portion the massacre unfolded, described the scene in a tweet.

“The shooter was lining people up and asking if they were Christian,” she wrote. “If they said yes, then they were shot in the head. If they said no, or didn’t answer, they were shot in the legs. My grandma just got to my house, and she was in the room. She wasn’t shot, but she is very upset.

Kortney Moore, an 18-year-old student at Umpqua Community College who was also in the room, told Oregon’s News Review that the shooter was indeed on the hunt for Christians.

Moments after hearing a bullet come flying through a window, she said the 20-year-old shooter made his way inside and targeted their teacher, pumping a single round into their head.

As the young man ordered people to the ground, Moore laid patiently with her classmates and waited, according to the News Review.

Once they all got down, she said the gunman began asking people to rise and say what their religion was. After they stood and gave their answer, he started shooting.

***GUNMAN IDENTIFIED***

Officials have identified the shooter as Chris Harper Mercer. From Fox:

No background on Mercer – or details about any possible motive – were released. However, Fox was told that as a precaution, counterterrorism officials were running his name against watchlists and checking his e-mail history, phone logs, social media profiles and online history to rule out any links to terrorism.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said that as of Thursday night, “we are reporting 10 fatalities in the shooting (and) seven injuries” who were transported to a local hospital and to a hospital in Eugene. Mercer was included in the death count.

Hanlin said he did not anticipate naming any of the victims for another 24 to 48 hours.

as soon as the sun rises….

He’s nearing the end of his reign. Time’s running out to eradicate the 2nd Amendment. You know this is the third great prize and the grand objective of his regnancy, er, presidency (including nationalized healthcare, a scheme for the destruction of Israel, and the end of the 2nd Amendment). Little known fact: Obama worked for the Joyce Foundation, primarily devoted to feeding America’s judges and legal community with anti-2nd Amendment propaganda). Time to up the Alinksy ratchet. Don’t be surprised over some kind of executive order.

I’ll just say it again…

“BUCK YOU, FOBAMA!”

You LIE!

I think Obama;’s feelings are genuine. The problem is, he accepts -lwqays has – prepackaged solutions – and whatever legislation he would propose would probably be snake oil.

So also are conservative proposals that talk about the person.

What maybe could work is something taht would have other people vouch for a gun owner – OF BOTH SEXES – with some kind of disinmcentive to be too free with recommendations – and some incentive to say something if they see something.

Restrictions on gun manufacturing. Nobody needs anything above a 6 shooter.

The ability to sue gun manufacturers.

Sammy, you’re an idiot. Don’t ever buy a gun.

Sammy you’re an idiot. Stop breathing.

Gee, Sammy… maybe you ought to be required to have people vouch for you before you open your mouth and offer your opinions. Would that work for you?

Juba Doobai! in reply to Sammy Finkelman. | October 1, 2015 at 8:54 pm

Sammy, the terrorist in Oregon did not have a six shooter. Obama want to pave the way for his people to kill Americans by disarming us—just like those people were in Oregon. Why would you want to put your fellow citizens’ lives at risk, Sammy?

Wow, that’s brilliant! That would stop criminals and dishonest people in their tracks. I especially like the “disincentive” part.

Why has no one thought of that before?

“What maybe could work is something taht would have other people vouch for a gun owner – OF BOTH SEXES – with some kind of disincentive to be too free with recommendations…”

      Rinardman:

Wow, that’s brilliant! That would stop criminals and dishonest people in their tracks.

It would. If you have to let ten people – or at least four people – know you want to be a gun owner – anything criminal would have to be a conspiracy. And conspiracies are not that easy to organize.

The vouching would also be that the person in quesiton knows how to preperly use a gun – or will learn – and how to prevent it from being stolen. That part might not be so enforceable, but it would create an incentive to be careful.

I especially like the “disincentive” part. I haven’t got that part worked exactly out – it needs to be something discouraging anyone from just signing, or doing it for money, but not too strong.

You won’t have members of a gang all vouching for each other. Not if they want to stay out of jail, especially after a crime is committed.. Detectives would have aready made list of people to interview and of possible accessories

And at least 3 out of 10 of the people who vouch would have to be of the opposite sex. That’s a key element.

Most people could meet that – but some people could not.

And if some people had a record of vouching for the wrong people, or were untrustworthy themselves, well, what better a heads up could you get??

I think there needs to be more than 3 or 4 people, to make sure the net is cast wide enough, and that enough people who know the individual are saying this is both a decent and a competent person, who won’t commit a crime nor cause an accident with the gun or let it get stolen.

Why has no one thought of that before?

You could ask that same question about a lot of my other ideas. People are not very imaginative. The arguments never move off dead center.

I’m going to make a really wild guess here, and postulate that you’re not a serious student of this issue.

“Nobody needs anything above a six shooter!” What are the first six for?

Sammy Finkelman in reply to Owego. | October 2, 2015 at 5:00 pm

Six is maybe too much. Maybe it should be limited to 3 shots without reloading.

      Why the limit?

Because an attacker doesn’t care how many poeple he shoots or where he shoots, but a legitimate defender needs to aim carefully.

Of course somewhere maybe you could have something aaginst an army, but really, this isn’t a common situation.

Who vouched for your right to post such drivel?

Guns have saved hundreds of millions of lives in the USA. Just in the last 7 years they have prevented Tyrant Obama the Liar from implementing the final solution his buddy Bill Ayers wanted to impose on the USA. Bill wanted to throw 200 million of us into reeducation camps to force us to embrace communism and expected to murder the 20 million who resisted this brainwashing.

The supreme court ruled that the 2nd amendment gives citizens the right to keep and bear arms that are roughly the same as that carried by our infantry.

Well, the Oregon Legislature passed, and the governor signed, a “universal” (criminals excluded) background check this year. Looks like a success so far.
/sarc

By definition the stuff that criminals do is outside the law. For some reason people keep thinking laws matter to criminals.

Oh, and by the way, when is Obama going to speak out against the hate this killer had for Christians?

Why are they withholding the name/identity of the shooter for so long?

His name is ‘Some Asshole’. http://i.imgur.com/kE7yIwt.png

I really like this. I’ve been using “killer,” but this idea is better.

Declaration #6: People who go on killing sprees to get attention (See V- Tech, NIU, Columbine, etc.) will not ever be mentioned by name in the press. They will only be referred to by silly emasculating names such as “Darling Princess Poofiness the Third”. All pictures of them will be modified to put them in ridiculous outfits. Once a year there will be a holiday where small children gather to laugh at these people. This will do more to reduce school violence than any amount of dress codes or banned music.

It’s almost an ironclad law in sports journalism that the cameras cut away from the field and they go int a break if a fan runs onto the playing field. If the intrusion is such that it has to be mentioned in the post game coverage in order to make sense of what happened the trespasser’s name is not used.

Subotai Bahadur in reply to heyjoojoo. | October 1, 2015 at 10:04 pm

Given the way they have handled past “not really terrorism” terrorist attacks by Muslims, and the reasonable assumption that has become the norm that if they will not give the name of a suspect it is because it is a protected class perpetrator, it is not beyond the Pale to guess that it is a Muslim. Add in the detail that he questioned the victims and shot Christians only in the head, and certain conclusions come to mind.

Because I am not a generous or trusting sort, I am not above viewing Obama’s otherwise unreasonable rantings before the facts are out as a possible bit of misdirection, in addition to an attack on the 2nd Amendment.

I saw a report that he lined up Christians or asked them what religion they were before shooting them.

    AZ_Langer in reply to heyjoojoo. | October 1, 2015 at 8:40 pm

According to KGW, he asked them to state their religion. One tweet said those who admitted to being Christian were shot in the head while others were shot in the legs.

Let us disarm Obama’s secret service guards.

Well, we don’t know if the murderer of our fellows is another Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, an atheist, a Satanist or what. We do know that if the killer had been anything but Muslim, the LSM wouldnhave told us eagerly. The failure to identify him speaks volumes. Maybe he’s just a disenchanted Christian,

Since the government does not grant us the right to arms, they’re going to have a difficult time prohibiting them. They’ve about reached the limits of what they can do without blatantly violating the constitutional prohibition on the infringement of our rights and they know it.

Despite news stories reporting that fewer Americans own guns than in the recent past, I’m seeing first hand more and more people purchasing their first firearms. And once they buy one, they generally end up buying more. I’m training more first time shooters than ever before… and that includes people who politically to the left. I’ve trained more women in the last 5 years than in the 15 years preceding that.

Obama and the activists can whine all they want but ordinary Americans aren’t going to be dissuaded by cheap political stunts.

Despite news stories reporting that fewer Americans own guns than in the recent past…

Yeah, well those stories are based on phone surveys which are based on the assumption that when a complete stranger cold-calls you out of the blue and asks for your name and address and whether you own any guns, and what kind, and when you bought them, and where are they stored, you’re actually going to tell them.

Which, especially in today’s social and political environment, I’m not sure is a safe assumption.

Obama’s call for gun confiscation will fall on deaf ears in Roseburg.

In the 2012 election, Romney got 62.3%, Obama 34.7% in Douglas County. That’s a considerably better percentage than some counties east of the Cascades.

Folks should remember that Oregon politics is dominated by the Portland metro area, the north coastal counties, and much (but not all) of the Willamette Valley. The geographic bulk of Oregon ranges from pretty to extremely conservative.

Apologies, Mike, thumb down was to be a reply. Reply is that NY state is a mirror image of the situation you describe in Oregon. Here, it’s NYC and the Hudson valley up to Albany that define as a liberal state one where the greatest geographic portion is conservative. They constantly superimpose their problems upon us along with their (failed) solutions. The end result is that their problems get no better, and frequently worse, and they make life miserable for the rest of us.

      No offense taken, Oswego.

I’ve got cousins in Saratoga Springs and Queens who chafe under blue rule.

And, upstate has my sympathies, especially for the economic dysfunction occasioned by the no fracking rule imposed on you by your down state “betters.”

      Kind regards,

      O.M.

Best case scenario it would have taken 3 minutes for an armed guard to get to these poor kids. If they were allowed to have concealed carry the cowardly shooter either wouldn’t have gone there, or he could have been taken out by one of those in the classroom he attacked. The only defense is allowing these professors and kids to defend themselves.

amwick in reply to damocles. | October 2, 2015 at 9:00 am

Concealed carry is legal there. The school itself prohibits it. Umpqua Community College is a posted Gun Free Zone but allows concealed carry under Oregon law. This is confusing to me. So, I guess, if you had a CC permit, you would have to risk getting expelled for violating policy.

Sammy Finkelman in reply to damocles. | October 2, 2015 at 5:21 pm

If they were allowed to have concealed carry the cowardly shooter either wouldn’t have gone there,

Like Dylan Roof in South Cartolina avoided a college where he thought people might carry guns and went to a church instead.

Well, if taking our guns stops murders, then taking our cars would stop global warming, and taking our silverware would stop obesity, and taking our internet would stop opposition, and taking our…..

I fail to see what is difficult to understand about the phrase, “shall not be infringed.”

Grabbing guns from people who don’t commit crimes will do nothing to reduce the deaths from those who do commit those crimes. One nut goes into a gun free zone and everyone goes ballistic. 30 killed in Chicago due to gang activity and we get silence. This is not about gun violence. It is about disarming the law abiding public.

    DaveGinOly in reply to showtime8. | October 2, 2015 at 12:50 am

    But…but…black lives matter!

A reporter with some cojones should ask Obama, “Why have you spoken out about the deaths of a few white college students, but have been completely silent on the black-on-black crime in inner cities that racks up a similar toll every weekend? You’ve been accused of being a Muslim, but I have to ask, are you a racist too? Do you hate your own people? or do you just not care?”

This is an interesting admission from Obama. If his response to murder has become routine, perhaps he should look in the mirror for somebody who is not listening to the very real feedback he is getting. If there has been no progress, part of the reason is his lack of interest, engagement, and willingness to consider other points of view.

As of June of this year, 19,000 people had died from car violence. How would that look on the graph? Why aren’t they demanding we ban and confiscate cars?

It’s 10:25 PM PST, and in this story, http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/breakingnews/shooter-who-killed-9-wounded-7-at-oregon-college-identified/ar-AAf0MOh?li=AAa0dzB, MSN reports the shooter asked students “to stand up and state their religion before he started shooting.” No mention that he targeted for death those who replied “Christian,” as other outlets have been reporting for several hours (since at least 4:30 PM PST).

Here is CNN reporting that he specifically targeted Christians:
http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/02/us/oregon-umpqua-community-college-shooting/index.html

Before going into spinal surgery, Anastasia Boylan told her father and brother the gunman entered her classroom firing.

“I’ve been waiting to do this for years,” the gunman told the professor and then shot him point blank, Boylan recounted.

Others were hit too, she told her family.

Everyone in the classroom dropped to the ground.

The gunman, while reloading his handgun, ordered the students to stand up and asked if they were Christians, Boylan told her family.

“And they would stand up and he said, ‘Good, because you’re a Christian, you’re going to see God in just about one second,'” Boylan’s father, Stacy, told CNN, relaying her account.

“And then he shot and killed them.”

Sammy Finkelman in reply to ksbsnowowl. | October 2, 2015 at 5:17 pm

“I’ve been waiting to do this for years,”

But he didn’t do it until he was willing to, or wanted to, die.

How many people might do such a thing and are only deterred by the (de facto) death penalty??

Everyone should read “Day of Wrath” if they are concerned about protecting our children from mass murderers. This book is about a ISIS terrorism attack on our schools with the goal of murdering thousands of children and their parents. In case you think that’s not possible your research the Beslan school massacre and the attack on the Army Public School and Degree College in Peshawar Pakistan.

If this young mixed race guy was involved with 4chan then he likely came in contact with evil. There are plenty of people on 4chan who will encourage you to commit suicide and evil if you are depressed.

http://kingdomventurers.com/2014/08/09/hearts-of-darkness/

We are becoming a nation of victims, and progressives are celebrating that as an accomplishment.

Gun control is the ultimate goal; a whole nation of victims to control and dominate.

Obama getting out there and gleefully splashing around in the still-wet blood of murder victims in order to push a blatantly political agenda was just contemptible.

I am so over this ugly, classless, gloating little man.

Even when students with access to guns thwart a mass killing at a school, the media lies about the facts.

This looks somewhat similar to Sandy Hook, where the over protective mother was considering moving the son to a new area before he want on a rampage. The shooter has no father in the picture. The mother is said to be over protective. He doesn’t seem to have an employment history and at age 26 was still living at home. She moved from Torrence, CA not to long ago Neighbors from both locations report he was anti-socialand dressed in military style camo. What social contact he had seemed to be mostly on-line at questionable sites.

This looks somewhat similar to Sandy Hook, where the over protective mother was considering moving the son to a new area before he want on a rampage

Exactly the wrong thing to do.

Other rampages have been precipitated by someone getting fired. Getting evicted is on a par with that.

That something is the shooter’s life seems to be coming to an end and he doesn’t want to live under a new dispensation is almost a requirement for these things.

The one saving grace is that people doing this expect to be killed. That substantially redices the number of people doing this.

But we’ve got some people who think it’s all right to kill other people as long as you’re willing to die yourself. There are a lot of murder suicides within families.

This sort of thing – mass attacks – happens with someone who likes nobody, and thinks, or knows, that nobody likes him, and thinks it is an acceptable price to pay to get heard, sometimes maybe not to get heard specifically, but to be somebody. Or to punish the world.

(not realizing that nobody really is going to pay attention to his motives for very long. Pretty soon the next shooter will come along, with a different set of not quite articulated grievances.)

“Harper-Mercer’s disdain for organized religion was evident in his social media posts and profiles.”

Cause and effect? Remember the ubiquitous angry social media tweets against the Pope listed in a previous post?

“His first blog post, titled “The material world is a lie,” was published to the site 20 days before his birthday in July.

“For so long we have been taught that what’s important in life is to buy this and have that,” he wrote. “To always have the latest fashion, biggest tv, fanciest car, nicest house, and blah, blah, blah. Well, the truth is we’ve become so attached to these things, our spiritual development has been halted. … This attachment produces so much of the stress and worrying in the world today.””

These statements relate directly to a previous comment I made the day before under the Whole Foods post. I wrote:

“Questioning inmates who “work for pennies on the dollar” is actually saying “materialism is man’s highest aspiration.””

Harper-Mercer’s statements could be taken as an indictment of the Obama/Warren/Progressive constant focus on materialism above and beyond the spiritual and moral character and traditions of this nation.

Progressivism’s never ending demand for wealth redistribution, increased minimum wage, their denigration of the 1% – all of the public outcries in the name of the god of “Materialism” in conjunction with the media’s constant focus on materialism with its flaunting the rich on “reality” TV reinforces a distorted thinking that everyone should be a self-serving objectivist (but only within the coercive collectivist religion of Materialism). “You will soon be empowered by money and material things that others possess right now.” Even Pope Francis is getting in on the materialism act.

Progressivism is Marxism is materialism is soullessness. And, it is now coupled with Social Darwinism. Nihilism, Eugenics, assisted suicide…all of these destructive elements and more are Progressive ideology byproducts along with despair, suicide and indiscriminate murder including abortion.

We can never know Harper-Mercer’s reason for shooting Christians in the head. He may have thought that Christians had let him down spiritually. According to his web page Harper-Mercer was looking for a Wiccan – a purely satanic objectivist disguised as a “spiritual” person – for a partner.
At some point he turned away from hope in spiritual truth and disengaged from it and reality, perhaps by spending time on 4chan. Harper-Mercer’s deed seems to be him renouncing all ties – spiritually and materially – to his world.

(This is not about guns, Obama. It’s about people like you who focus on materialism above all else.)
