I headed off to JFK Airport for my trip to Israel on Friday not long after Obama gave his surprise speech on the Florida jury verdict finding George Zimmerman not guilty of Second Degree Murder and Manslaughter in the killing of Trayvon Martin.
The presidential statement elevated the Martin case to a historic status in the struggle for civil rights, although a discussion of the facts of the case was noticeably absent.
Having had a subsequent 10-hour plane ride with no Wi-Fi, then some more down time, I was thrilled to see that the regular and guest authors here had taken Obama and others to task on the factual and legal absurdity of the presidential statement. Thanks Mandy, Andrew, Fuzzy and Neo-Neocon.
The evidence in the case — presented in court both at trial and in pre-trial proceedings — revealed that Martin bragged about fighting and how he could sucker punch people in the nose, possessed unlicensed firearms, was suspended from school for misconduct arguably involving possession of stolen property and/or burglary tools, did in fact sucker punch George Zimmerman in the nose after calling him a “creepy assed cracker,” then beat Zimmerman Mixed Martial Arts style while bashing Zimmerman’s head against the concrete as he screamed for his life, all of which was consistent with the forensic evidence and eyewitness accounts.
Beyond that, Zimmerman was of mixed race (white, Hispanic, black) with no history of racism against blacks found by the FBI, and many anecdotes showing Zimmerman was not racist.
On top of all that, the State of Florida took extraordinary efforts to prosecute the case, including appointing a Special Prosecutor when regular line prosecutors declined to file charges for lack of evidence sufficient to prove a crime beyond a reasonable doubt, sparing no expense or effort to prove the case to a jury.
Prior to the verdict being announced, the almost universal view of legal observers was that Zimmerman had a plausible claim of justifiable use of deadly force under traditional principles of self-defense based on the evidence presented at trial.
The jury reached a verdict which was consistent with the law and the facts.
Now there are mass protests, marches and calls for boycotts of Florida, egged on and encouraged by the President, and an extraordinary tip line established by the Attorney General of the United States in a disturbing attempt to find something with which to charge Zimmerman.
In what universe does the President of the United States elevate this case — this case, this case — to civil rights landmark status as reflective of historical injustices visited upon blacks and call a nation to action?
I felt like I had taken off from an imperfect planet Earth, and landed in an alternate universe.

The case for self defense was not merely plausible. Having followed the case and trial very closely both here and at TalkLeft (Jeralyn Merritt)I would argue that self defense was proven by clear and convincing evidence.
But that won’t stop the Trayvon Truthers. They live in an alternate universe of counterfactuals and hypothesis.

With over 30 years of law enforcement I have responded to many calls like this. Based off the evidence this is a clear example of self defense on Zimmerman’s part. Zimmerman was on his back being beaten without the ability to flee. Zimmerman mental state surely must have been this guy was going to do great bodily harm or death to him by pinning him down and assaulting him. Zimmerman was well in his rights to use lethal force in order to save his life. The jury got it right. The biggest problem was the case being tried in the media who didn’t present all the facts or evidence and wanted to make this a racial issue.

Oh, PC rages over here. And the US is about to force us to release some murderers. We have gun control, and the death penalty is completely out of the culture.

I was out and about at a bike fair in Oakland this afternoon.
Saw a black man with a shirt that said “Do I look suspicious too?”
And a black woman with a placard about “America condoning murder”.
I guess I can’t expect better when even our POTUS gets in the act.
Of course, dozens of 17-year-old black kids were murdered in Chicago since the Zimmerman indictment, but no one has made a national case out of it because it wasn’t a “white wanna-be cop murdered an unarmed black kid with Skittles and iced tea”.
I fear for my country, when the rule of law is apparently supposed to be replaced by minority mob rule.
The mayor of Oakland tells us that “we need to think about” the fact that most people at some point have felt nervous about being followed by a black man.
Could she have meant: We need to think about why so many black men are behaving in a way that provokes a nervous response to their demographic group, and how that kind of behavior could be minimized?
Of course, not, silly! She meant we need to cast aside our wariness and flagellate ourselves for applying risk analysis, or good instincts, to our surroundings. Better that some unlucky souls be mugged, I suppose, than that another Barack Obama look-alike have to suffer the horrors of hearing a car door locking.

I think the landmark Obama is referring to is the one in which evidence is no longer required to prove racism. Either that or the landmark is that Obama is involved in this case (albeit unnecessarily).

I haven’t been to Israel since the 1970’s. We were living in Saudi at the time and they were kind enough not to stamp our passport.

In Chicago at a memorial for a man who was shot and killed in 2008 shots rang out hitting a 6 year old girl in the chest last night while she rode her scooter. The girls aunt was also shot in the thigh. The shooting started when a one young man saw two others and started shooting at each other. The girl and her aunt are in serious condition at a local hospital. Haven’t heard any of the so called Reverends at the TM rallies in the country asking those attending to pray for them. Why don’t the Reverend Al, Jackson and numerous other so called men of God speak about the gospel and Jesus and loving one another.
A total of 8 people were shot last night in Chicago last night with 2 dead a 20 and a 27 year old. In the 1st week of July there were 20 murder victims alone in Chicago but these phonies are still protesting a self-defense incident that happened over a year ago.

The “Reverend” Charles William II led this march today. He is a charter member of the leftist group People for The American Way(what a laffer that title is).
He has been at the forefront of the protests, marches, etc. against the Emergency Manager for Detroit and I’m sure he has a full list of civil rights complaints about the bankruptcy filing.

Today, I was out and about. And, what’s surprised me the most is that absolutely no one is talking about this case! Does that mean a lot of people are just holding their feelings privately? Where did conversation go?
Not even obama’s 17 minutes of speech without notes seems to be hitting any chords.
When Nixon went down people were not quiet! (Of course, back in those days I was living in Manhattan.) But wherever you walked more people were talking about Nixon, than were talking about the weather.
Heck, I even remember what Pauline Kael said back in 1972. Nixon won his re-election in a landslide. (McGovern, picked up one State.) And, Pauline Kael, writing for the New Yorker Magazine said, “Gee, I don’t know one person who voted for him.”
By the way, I repeated this remark to my mom. Who corrected me by saying “I did.”
I’m more surprised by the silence than anything. Because I think lots and lots of Americans are just sadly disappointed.
In a universe where the President of the United States can make a negative assumption about a man based on his race, IE Zimmerman is partially white therefore he MUST be a racist. Why should I be surprised at Obama’s racism? After all, he’s the man who derisively called his grandmother a “typical white person” and took Henry Louis Gates’ side after admitting he had no idea what happened at Cambridge.
I’m especially troubled by his failure to call for a recognition of Zimmerman’s right to self defense.
Call it tragic that Martin led a life that brought it to such a conclusion.

When I hear the comments of the people who continue to protest the verdict in the Zimmerman case and who now suggest that the law of defense should be modified or abandoned, I feel frustration and perhaps even sadness. I’ve heard a number of comments like “Trayvon Martin had every right to be there.” Who suggests that he didn’t? Who suggests that Zimmerman was found not guilty because Martin didn’t have a right to be there? These same people simply ignore the fact that the evidence indicated that Martin started the fight and continued beating Zimmerman as Zimmerman screamed in terror for approximately 40 seconds before he shot Martin. What’s up? Do these people not realize how ignorant they sound when they ignore these crucial facts. Do these people want to modify the law of self defense so that no white person or person of mixed race can assert it when the person defended against is black, but leave the law intact so that a black person may legally defend himself against an violent attack by a white person? If not, does this mean that they wish to make it illegal for a black person to defend himself against an unprovoked violent attack from a white person? It seems that they are asserting that no white person or person of mixed race can observe the actions of black person, or that doing so makes the white person or person of mixed face fair game for being beaten. Can only white persons or persons of mixed race look suspicious, but not black persons? According to Whoopi Goldberg, apparently so. Mark O’Mara asked her: “If because he’s black, can he never look suspicious?” She replied, “I kinda think no…” To her and to many of the protestors, a black person never can look suspicious. Interesting. The protests regarding the outcome of the Zimmerman case are absurd, and reveal the protestors to have (i) an ignorance of the facts of the case, (ii) an inability to reason, or (iii) a very deep seated animus toward white people and people of mixed race. Whatever the reason, it is frustrating and sad.
Instead of trying to actually rehabilitate their (the black community) image, what they’re trying to do is to modify their image by changing the system thereby changing how the system defines their image.
As many other have suggested, they’re trying to move the goal posts, instead of shooting through the current goal posts.
Because having to actually put in the work of changing the image is much more difficult than changing the perception of their image. It’s like a drug addict that refuses rehabilitation and instead glorifies their addiction as the norm rather than an affliction.
All these protests can be seen as nothing more than Communist agitators trying to break down the rule of law.
They create disorder and division and they fan grievances and a sense of injustice in order to achieve their agenda.
Communist trick as old as the movement.
Most of (working) America is not interested in buying into totalitarianism. They remember how badly it worked out for Russians, East Germans, any group in the USSR, for Iraq, Iran, etc.
Keep in mind that those making a big thing about TM legitimately being where he was are talking about the place where the physical altercation occurred, and not where he was first seen by GZ, which was walking around on the grass on someone else’s front yard appearing to be trying to look in the windows. This house,BTW, was a couple of doors away from a house that had been recently burglarized (but not by TM, since at least one (black) suspect was in custody already). It was partially that TM appeared not to legitimately be on that front lawn that was part of why GZ was initially suspicious.
For whatever it’s worth, I’m black and I see the Zimmerman/Martin case as self defense that didn’t even provide probably cause for an arrest, much less enough evidence for a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt. It’s a travesty that the government’s resources were used in this way. I’m one voice, but one is better than none.
That should have been “probable” cause.

Alternative universe, yes. I wrote on verdict day, “I am watching Twilight Zone episodes from the sixties looking for some guidance from Rod Serling in this matter.” It’s a universe of mirrors where each fact is turned on its head upside down. “If only he stayed in his car like he was told.” Not true, but even if it was, it’s like saying, “If only Lincoln didn’t go to the theatre that night.” Lincoln’s fault he got killed, right? Everything from the Martin side is a lie. Everything they say about Zimmerman is false, but true about their son, Trayvon. Zimmerman was profiled by Martin who bragged about beating up a snitch. Zimmerman was a snitch, and in his universe, “snitches get stitches.” Viewed as some kind of civil right, I guess. So Trayvon, baited Zimmerman by walking around his car in an attempt to intimidate him. Ran into the alley between the buildings where he hid in the darkness, silently stalking Zimmerman. He waited for Zimmerman to get off the phone with 911, and launched his vicious attack. Zimmerman, who according to the “one drop rule” of race classification, is just as black as Obama. The yellow press morphs him into a white man to fit the the lie. When the witnesses for the state proved it was Zimmerman who was being attacked, the case changed to who was screaming for their life. State produced two witnesses to prove who was screaming, mother and brother. They would not even put his father, Tracy Martin, on the stand. The defense had to do that job, and followed it up with at least two credible witnesses that said basically, Tracy Martin purjured himself. So did the mother and brother, IMHO. I’ll give the mother a free pass on that, but in her heart, she knows the truth. Brother I’ll give a free pass to also, he’s too young to resist the incredible pressure to go along with the big lie. The defense brings many witnesses saying it was Zimmerman screaming, but the state could not produce a single witness, like a teacher, a friend, anybody that knew him well, to say otherwise. Not even his father? Statements from Crump repeatedly said it’s not about race. In hindsight it appears the justice system was acting fairly, correctly, blindly and justly until the Martins, with lots of help from Shapton, Obama, the Justice Department, and an all too willing press, injected race into it. The train of justice, running perfectly fine up to that point, derails and wrecks. Trayvon’s death was a tragedy like any 17 YO male who makes a poor judgement that results in their death. Driving too fast, swimming in dangerous waters, as they say, a thousand ways to die. That’s all it is. The Martins need to heal for sure. It’s natural to blame somebody or something other than themselves or the decisions their son made that awful night. It’s called being human. That’s why we have laws. To protect innocent people from mob passions and misdirected anger. Who’s civil rights have been egregiously violated when you subtract the awful race and hatred?
The important thing here is to confront Obama on his dissembling about his own past and that of Trayvon Martin’s life. The failure of society to confront a false assertion is a liberal’s only true weapon.
Obama’s race speech was strictly about dissembling and distraction from the real issue, the devolution of Black Culture into drug and alcohol abuse. The President’s own background speaks directly to indulging in this failure. The speech Obama should have made to be a “transformative leader” would have been to take responsibility for his failure of character as a teenager in selling and using drugs when he was leader of the Chom gang in Hawaii. It would have been inspirational to Black teenagers like Trayvon to see that they had a future if only they would trade in their drug and gun culture for assimilating the American Culture of Success as he did through education.
Instead, Obama squandered his opportunity to be something more than mouth piece validating liberalism’s racist views of why Blacks need to be nannied by the State. So because we are not about to let this go unanswered Obama will quietly change the subject, but the damage has been done, for the hard core liberal, their view has been validated only because it was publicly voiced regardless if it once again has been rejected. This whole episode has demonstrated quite clearly that liberal’s penchant for group rights are racists by insisting a person be judged based on the color of their skin and not the content of their character. Martin who threw the first punch driven by his own racist homophobia is considered the victim by liberals because of the color of his skin: and Zimmerman is considered the perp because of his light skin.
Have you noticed that liberals seldom have a real victim these days? All they can muster is a faux victim.

Sheesh, I just assumed this was a “flash gaff” for the chumps. (Flash gaff is UK criminal slang for an over the top diversion, a trick or ruse used in a confidence game. It’s meant to get you to look the other way when you are being robbed.) In this case, the purpose is to get the working folks to look away from Immigration Reform, which will screw the working poor of all ethnicities, especially AAs.

I have all the experiences (black man followed in a store, etc.) cited by President Obama, but my experiences lead me in a different direction. I NEVER want to see special interests manipulate law enforcement and the judicial system to attempt to send someone to jail with no real evidence that the person committed a crime. If there is evidence that GZ shot TM because of race, by all means prosecute him. But if there is no evidence of race bias, let him/her go. No black american, considering the history of race bias against blacks, should ever condone prosecuting and convicting someone (of any race) with little or no evidence. Being found guilty based on flimsy or non-existent evidence while ignoring, discounting or suppressing exculpatory evidence – these are exactly the things that have historically happened to us in the judicial system, and I’m against it happening to anyone. Period.
I think that the depths that Obama has descended to are tragic. He has demeaned himself, his office & his country.
It is manifestly obvious that Obama has resorted to using this case to inflame the populace in order to provide a smokescreen for all the other abuses of his office. For example, he now has a prima facie case to answer on the IRS scandal.
The comparison between the “Pussy Riot” case of judicial manipulation in Russia and the Zimmerman case is horrible to think about.
My question to Obama is: what on earth have we in the Western world been fighting for since 1939 if it is not freedom from abuse of power by the likes of him & Holder? Neither History nor the American people will EVER forgive him.
