I’m not going to be ignored, Gannett

I’m not going to be ignored, Gannett

I have sent the following email twice to the media contact person at Gannett corporate, first two days ago and again yesterday.  I also left a voice message requesting a response.

My questions were pretty straightforward regarding the publication by the Gannett-owned Lower Hudson Journal News of the names and addresses of gun permit holders:

Has Gannett issued any statements regarding the controversy?  If so, please direct me to them.  In addition:

1.  What is the position of Gannett as to whether the identities of gun permit holders should have been published at the Journal News?  This goes beyond whether the Journal News legally was entitled to do so.  I’m seeking Gannett’s corporate position on whether the Journal News should have published such information.

2.  There are news reports that some of the gun permit holders are active and retired policemen, correctional guards, and women with protective orders, who now are concerned that they are endangered by publication of their names and addresses.  What is Gannett’s response to those concerns?

3.  Some people, in retaliation for the publication of gun permit holder names and addresses, have published similar information about Journal News and Gannett employees.  What is Gannett’s position on the publication of personal information regarding Journal News and Gannett employees?

I appreciate your prompt response.

I’m not going to be ignored, Gannett.

I’m getting the same silent treatment I received from NBC News about David Gregory.

And I’m not happy.

I don’t intend this to be in any way disparaging, but wouldn’t you expect any statements or silence are due specifically to the advice of counsel? I suspect this matter is too politically radioactive for sure, and may pose such a significant legal exposure (suits and money) that Gannett is sitting it out for now.

It amazes me at how bad people and companies have gotten at followup. I have been in sales for 20 years and when I started I could leave a message for an existing customer (not cold calling)and 90% responded promptly. Today I am ecstatic to get a 20% response rate. And this is for accounts I have called on for years.

An uninvited email to a major news organization has a snowballs chance in hell of getting a response.

I’m on the opposite side of the continent. Are there not enough principled people in the NE to picket these jerks? Or, is the republic truly lost?

(Gannett’s presumed thinking):

Who do you think you are questioning OUR judgment,
asking US questions about OUR actions

An American Citizen?

“I’m not going to be ignored…”
Wanna bet?

Sorry, Professor. You don’t riot, you’re not a billionaire, you’re not a rabble-rouser, you’re not a “minority”, you’re not a Cherokee, and most importantly, you’re not a liberal.

So…wanna bet?

*sniff* *sniff*

Smells a little like boiled bunny in here tonight.

Uhh hey WJ, umm you need back up, one call to some friends..done deal. You Profess Law and Blog. We handle da’ rest.. 😉

Since 44,000 people – making up 4 and 1/3 percent of all adults in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties in New York – have been named by the Journal News as hand gun permit holders, they should immediately discontinue subscriptions to any and all Gannett newspapers.

Gannett Newspapers are dying and we should all help put them out of their misery. Besides the publishing of information on the Journal News and its staff that has shown up on Insty, a listing of key Gannett executives should be also added just to make it fair. What’s good for the goose . . .

C’mon professor. Put it on the WH petition website and make an extravaganza of both issues. You should be able to muster the 25K needed to get a response, and if nothing else the other blogs will pick it up and run with it.

If the elements of the crime of harassment or nuisance (is a google map a “place”?) are (at least arguably) met, would there be a private action available in tort, notwithstanding the status of tort privacy actions in New York? Just one little lawsuit would open up discovery.

I finally gave up on Gannett. I let them know my subscriptions to them will lapse. I will never contribute another dime to their publications.

William A. Jacobson thinks he’s Glenn Close:

One of your compadres beat you to it. Neither of you are making any sense, though. Try harder.

The professor linked the Glenn Close scene from “Fatal Attraction” in his post. He made the reference initially and my comment was intended to suggest it is probably not wise to ignore him when he is “not happy.”

Not making sense to Valerie does not mean not making sense. But I guess Valerie might have difficulty understanding that too.

So Quixotic77 is comparing Prof. Jacobson to an hysterical pregnant woman with a borderline personality disorder?

Talk about quixotic…

See my comment above for clarification on the “Fatal Attraction” comparison.

As a side note, you’re the first person I’ve seen correctly identify the psychopathology of Glenn Close’s character in that movie. Well done. Another good example of borderline personality in movies is Jennifer Jason Leigh’s character in “Single White Female.” For narcissistic personality we only need look to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave – no need for a movie character to flesh that one out.

From The Devil’s Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce:

LICKSPITTLE, n. A useful functionary, not infrequently found editing a newspaper. In his character of editor he is closely allied to the blackmailer by the tie of occasional identity; for in truth the lickspittle is only the blackmailer under another aspect, although the latter is frequently found as an independent species. Lickspittling is more detestable than blackmailing, precisely as the business of a confidence man is more detestable than that of a highway robber; and the parallel maintains itself throughout, for whereas few robbers will cheat, every sneak will plunder if he dare.

With respect, Professor, ask yourself a simple question: What does the paper have to gain by answering your questions?

It was Henry Ford II (when I worked for Ford, we called him “Hank the Deuce”) who – after he was arrested for drunken driving – said “Never complain. Never explain.”

The Øbama administration and the main stream media have adopted this strategy for everything. They have no obligation to respond to any inquiries from anyone, so they don’t respond.

As long as the people accept this kind of behavior, as long as they buy the Lower Hudson Journal News and re-elect people like Nancy Pelosi and Barack Øbama, nothing will change.

If I may say, it’s a damn sad state of affairs.

Lets go Alinsky. Publish names and addreses of welfare, food stamps, and section 8 recipients. Include amounts, how long they have been receiving benefits.

Got an idea Prof., based on the fact I have not seen what I’m about to go into.

Pandora’s box has been opened on these law-abiding unfortunates. Who’s up for tracking its effects by looking into crime statistics in these areas before and after?

If a tree falls in the woods, but the MSM refuses to hear it, does it make a sound? Perhaps, but only if a noble Horton will use his mighty ears to hear the faint call of the Whoville blogosphere.

In the words of the ignorer: You don’t get it prof, you just don’t get it. (THEY are the Fourth Estate [and Fifth Column])

Good luck, Professor.

The Detroit Free Press went form “On Guard for 181 Years” to “A Gannett company”

….removed all “conservative” content, and commentators, and can longer even spell check a headline.

Many focus on the major publications, and their websites; not noticing what lurks just under the surface—where most folks get their news.

Click on to any Gannet site; read the articles, read the comments….

I dare anyone…
