Should the Obama team be courting Nascar fans?

Should the Obama team be courting Nascar fans?

Now the Obama marketing team is enticing donors with the opportunity to name put your name on a stock car:

image

Congressman G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina writes:

Regardless of whether you have had an opportunity to see a race on TV or experience the roar of a stock car engine in person, the 2012 Democratic National Convention has found a way for you to be a part of the racing tradition.

This seems like an odd audience to reach out, given that time the crowd booed Michelle Obama and Jill Biden.

But a study released in July 2011 by Professor Tim Groseclose of UCLA finds that the split between Democratic and Republican Nascar fans isn’t as one-sided as you might expect:

Of these NASCAR followers, 30.08% identified themselves as Republicans and 29.83% as Democrats.

So perhaps the Obama team has identified an opportunity segment. They’re not the first-to-market on this battleground, however. It seems the Obama campaign is truly “going green” — as in recycling old ideas. American Majority, an organization that recruits and trains citizen activists, already had this idea a couple of months ago as part of their voter education effort:

The program is designed to target millions of NASCAR fans from all political backgrounds in an unprecedented effort to engage them in the electoral process.  Having teamed up with NASCAR driver Jason Bowles and car #81 MacDonald Motorsports for the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series racing season, the American Majority Racing program is designed to educate Americans about how smaller government and less spending will “Keep America Free.”

What would you name an Obama racecar? Especially given the news Monday of their campaign slogan, “Forward?”

Obama should ABSOLUTELY sponsor a NASCAR entry.

That Chevy Volt would be just the thing.

Ragspierre in reply to Ragspierre. | May 1, 2012 at 10:01 am

I termed the Volt “Sparky Pinto” some time back.

Maybe the Obama Volt entry could be called “Old Flame”. Sort of a nostalgic thingy…

      “The Decline Express”

….with Solyndra as a sponsor’s name emblazoned on it. Maybe tie some solar cells to the rear bumper as symbolic of their wedded bliss. Oh, and let’s not forget the UAW. Use their logo and some artwork depicting baseball bat-wielding thugs strongly resembling Larry, Moe and Curly.

struggle..works well with “forward”

That’s raceist, ain’t it?

I don’t follow NASCAR, but I’d have to guess that any driver/team accepting such an endorsement would take a huge hit to their fanbase. Whether they care about that or not I don’t know.

Is this desperation by Obama? I’m surprised he would even go there since Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden were booed. But pandering seems to be a specialty of this crew.

theduchessofkitty | May 1, 2012 at 10:03 am

Yeah, I can see that coming…

That would be the one NASCAR car on the Indy 500 with rotten tomatoes and wrenches thrown at every turn of the race…

“Leading From Behind” – you don’t have to come in first to win. We have an ACORN pit crew.

NASCAR has been delving into the leftist agenda since the founder died, and his son took over-

He’s the one that invited Michelle to a race a while back-

In fact, they used an electric pace car in the last race-

The start of the race was a real nail biter. It was a night race, and as the race was about to start, one of the light banks wouldn’t light–and they had to do a few more lapse behind the pace car waiting for the lights to power up-

I’m sure I wasn’t the only one wondering if the pace car was going to run out of juice before the green flag-

In the spirit of “Forward” and its connection to history, how ’bout naming the car…

You beat me to it. I was thinking, well, since NASCAR vehicles travel Vorwarts while constantly turning to the left, this could be an excellent propganda, errrr . . . advertising fit for Team Obama.

Joy in reply to Ragspierre. | May 1, 2012 at 10:59 am

They need to save that one for when they sponsor a Monster Truck.

Professor, you misunderstood the promotion. They are not offering the opportunity to NAME the car. For a donation of $5 bucks you get YOUR name on the car. In teeny-tiny font. Or not. Depends on how many $5 suckers they can reel in.

Your name will be added along with our other grassroots supporters who know that this convention is different than any before it. Because the convention is not accepting contributions from corporations or lobbyists, we are relying on people like you to make this the most open and accessible in history.

Uh huh.

The DNC didn’t want to be Left behind in the dust:

In February of this year… Conservative group to sponsor NASCAR driver in election

American Majority is sponsoring a red-white-and-blue car with the words “Keep America Free” on one end, “American Majority Racing” on the other, and “Pledge To Vote” on the side.

“It’s time to put America back in the driver seat”

Karen Sacandy in reply to MerryCarol. | May 1, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Rick Santorum sponsored a car earlier this year. I don’t remember which race – it was a biggie – but it got rained out, like the first time ever. Very disappointing.

If anyone has been paying attention, this is not the first Santorum idea Obama has picked up. Rick also released a “Made in America” plan, and recently, I’ve seen photos of Obama with the “Made in U.S.A.” banners behind him.

Rick is in touch with the blue collar guys, and Obama is happy to mimick him, pretending to be in touch with regular guys. Sickens me.

      n.n in reply to MerryCarol. | May 1, 2012 at 2:21 pm

It is clearly prejudiced, but I happen to prefer American or American-oriented interests sponsoring our enterprises.

Since “Forward, HO!” would probably be considered racist, how about “Retread?”

And MarryCarol, just this one time don’t bother us with facts, this is just too much fun.

After reading MerryCarol’s elaboration of their campaign, the most accurate name would be: Deception. They still haven’t accounted for nearly $300 million (one half) received in his last campaign, which was not from small or even American donors; although, it was laundered through those sources.

As for “Forward”, that conforms with their predilection for ambiguous semantics. As “progress” has meant regression, “forward” likely mean backwards.

How about Cthulhu?

(sounds ethnic) 🙂

Wait a minute-

This is real?

No way this is real-gotta be snark…

Of these NASCAR followers, 30.08% identified themselves as Republicans and 29.83% as Democrats.

What I know of die hard NASCAR fans, and I know a little, they are not the most politically active group you’ll run across-

They just want to eat their waffle…er…be left alone.

DINORightMarie | May 1, 2012 at 11:02 am

How about, in light of the “Forward” campaign slogan, “The People’s Car” – aka Volkswagen!!

(In Spanish, it is el coche del pueblo, according to Google translate; I would have said el coche del gente, but I digress….)

Oh, yeah……Volkswagen – that’s taken already. Hmmmm, let’s see….English – still okay to use it? After all, if you follow the regime’s policies (suing states who try to enforce the borders and prevent illegal immigration, government documents translated in multiple languages, etc.), we might not be “inclusive” and “tolerant” if we use English…..well, maybe just using English is still okay.

Yes, use the English: The People’s Car. It fits. Yeah. Fits quite well with this regime, over all.

After all, it’s just like Obama’s policies: representing only SOME people (the donors), not ALL of We the People. (Remember us?! Didn’t think so.)

Maybe they could fit it with a loudspeaker to entertain the fans with an inspiring Hitler youth marching tune:

JackRussellTerrierist in reply to Joy. | May 1, 2012 at 1:06 pm

….and then break into some Tupac, Kanye and a few P.Diddly riffs. Or maybe he could get one of those inner-city choirs to record “This is for Trayvon!” in a rap chant to blast from trunk speakers.

This has to be the most depressing thing I’ve read in a long time. Almost 30% of NASCAR fans are Democrats and that almost equals the number of Republican fans? I really hope that’s a bogus statistic because I just can’t imagine it being true. Or I can imagine it being true and that’s why it’s so depressing.

There is no greater symbol of personal freedom than the automobile and nothing has been targeted by progressives with as much fervor and passion as the car. Nothing. It’s what’s behind every environmental wacko theory, it’s why liberals are so hell bent on mass transit boondoggles, and they won’t stop until they make it financially impossible for the average person to afford to own a car.

That’s their goal because aside from guns, the car is what keeps them from total control of the rest of us. To think that NASCAR fans have been assimilated is just too damned depressing.

Midwest Rhino in reply to Jaynie59. | May 1, 2012 at 11:53 am

But what does this do to the elite left’s narrative about those stupid redneck Republican NASCAR beer drinkers? Turns out they’re just average Americans. 🙂

    kbg in reply to Jaynie59. | May 1, 2012 at 1:31 pm

If anything, the 30% democrat stat is referring to good ole boy blue dog democrats, who are democrat in name only (like my late Grandaddy). They “cling to their guns and religion” and would rather die than vote for Obama. If Obama wants to waste his time and money trying to court the NASCAR crowd, I say let him.

Midwest Rhino | May 1, 2012 at 11:47 am

What kind of mileage will this left turning ObamaScar get?

Obviously an appeal to vanity … send in $5 (or whatever you can afford) and tell friends your name is on CarObama. Between this and his various raffles, Obama will end up with a million donors that gave $3, (and a thousand Solyndra style bundlers, foreign and domestic). I wonder if I send in $5, will that keep me off his enemies list?

DRAWROF

I hope that is what we read in our rear view windows in November when we throw this administration out.

Can I get ‘Stuttering Charlie Foxtrot of a Miserable Failure’?

What? ok, I denounce myself.

Since 0’s campaign website is shaky on matching names to credit cards, how about some creativity on the names? Think Seymour Butts will donate any money? Or Frederick Upham Ashwhole also known as F.U. Ashwhole?

How pathetic, and out of touch these elites are.

If we’re naming the car, it should either be “Run Hillary Run” (if its written on the front bumper) or Winning The Future 2012 (abbreviated of course).

If $5 only lets you add your name to the car in tiny print, we should have fun with it. Using a throwaway one-shot Visa like so many people did with his campaign site, go ahead and register with a supporters name. Che, Mao, Ayers, V.I. Lenin, Imma Twit, Hugh Gspender…

1). Nobody’s ever going to read it 2). Obastard’s campaign would still be getting the money

Out Of Stock

Bill Clark | May 1, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Am I the only one that noticed that Car #81 with MMS is a Toyota?

I would have thought Chevy or Dodge to be first choices.

NASCAR long ago abandoned anything remotely representing “stock cars.” To change a Chevy in to a Toyota, or vice versa, just change the faux body shell sitting on the frame. Voila’! It’s now one step away from pro-wretsling as a business. Yawn.

You’ll excuse me now, since NASCAR has no race on today, I’ve got grass I need to watch grow.

People need to understand that just because some NASCAR fans identified as democrats doesn’t mean they are of the liberal stripe. Very far from it. They’ll be mostly respectful but dont think for a second they give a fig about Chicago Jesus. Let them have their Obama car. The more money they spend on idiotic iniatives the less they can spend elsewhere.
