This is the latest in a series on the use of the race card for political gain:
Glenn Beck doesn’t like Newt. That didn’t keep Newt from appearing on Beck’s radio show and taking the hard questions.
Beck tried to force Newt into a “Teddy Roosevelt / progressive” box, but Newt was having none of it, schooling Beck on history and Newt’s own views.
I noted at the time that Newt got the best of Beck, and now Beck is lashing out by again trying to pigeonhole Newt as a “progressive.” If that were all there were to it, I wouldn’t be doing this post.
Regrettably,Beck went a step further and said that anyone who votes for Newt over Obama is doing so on the basis of race:
“If you have a big government progressive, or a big government progressive in Obama… ask yourself this, Tea Party: is it about Obama’s race? Because that’s what it appears to be to me. If you’re against him but you’re for this guy, it must be about race. I mean, what else is it? It’s the policies that matter.”
I originally titled this post “Glenn Beck plays the race card on Newt.” But that was a mistake.
Beck played the race card not only on Newt, but on me, and on you. How dare he say that my choice of Newt over Obama is a racial decision. Beck calls Newt a “progressive,” but Beck is a race card player, and unlike his accusations that Newt is a progressive, the title fits.
Right Scoop, which does not support Newt, reacts as I do:
I know Newt has his problems which is why he isn’t my primary candidate. And if you don’t support him in the primaries I totally understand. But to say he’s exactly like Obama, and on top of that, to say that a Tea Party member is racist for supporting Newt over Obama, that is absolutely absurd and in my opinion enough for me to discontinue watching Beck in any format, forever.

Oh heck, I like Beck but this is just crazy…… He’ll come out and apologize for this, he’ll have too 🙁 He needs to take a vacation, he’s been out in front of all this from day one. Go rest Beck, after you apologize….
I haven’t seen Beck since he left his Fox show for his GBTV. We loved that show. He has been in front of many predictions. So it is with great sadness that I say, I don’t recognize this Beck.

Accordingly, the U.S. State Department should be instructed to respect the choice of each sovereign nation and place the American embassy in their Capital. (Israel is the only country the United States discriminates against in this regard. The people of Israel have designated Jerusalem as their capital. Yet the United States retains its embassy in Tel Aviv.)
Executive Order 5. End the Attorney General’s Assault on the States. Instruct the Attorney General to withdraw all immigration-related lawsuits against states immediately, including those pending in Arizona and South Carolina. The Obama Administration refuses to enforce federal immigration laws, and instead sues states who are merely trying to enforce the laws that the federal government neglects. The Gingrich Administration will secure the border by Jan. 1, 2014 by any means necessary.
(Republicans may trick Obama into allowing this, but in case they don’t…)
Executive Order 6. The Keystone Pipeline Unleash American Energy by Approving the Keystone XL Pipeline. Instruct the State Department to approve a Presidential Permit immediately for the Keystone XL pipeline, a project that will send 700,000 barrels of oil a day from Great Plains and Southwestern states to Gulf Coast refineries lower staggering energy prices, and create up to 120,000 American jobs.
add to all that, his “21st century Contract with America”:
1. Repeal Obamacare and pass a replacement that saves lives and money by empowering patients and doctors, not bureaucrats and politicians.
2. Return to robust job creation with a bold set of tax cuts and regulatory reforms that will free American entrepreneurs to invest and hire, as well as by reforming the Federal Reserve and creating a training requirement for extended federal unemployment benefits to encourage work and improve the quality of our workforce.
3. Unleash America’s full energy production potential in oil, natural gas, coal, biofuels, wind, nuclear oil shale and more, creating jobs, stimulating a sustainable manufacturing boom, lowering gasoline and other energy prices, increasing government revenues, and bolstering national security.
4. Save Medicare and Social Security by giving Americans more choices and tools to live longer, healthier lives with greater financial independence.
5. Balance the federal budget by freeing job-creators to grow the economy, reforming entitlements, and implementing waste cutting and productivity improvement systems such as Lean Six Sigma to eliminate waste and fraud. Pass a balanced budget amendment to keep it balanced.
6. Control the border by January 1, 2014 and establish English as the official language of government; reform the legal visa system, and make it much easier to deport criminals and gang members while making it easier for law abiding visitors to come to the US.
7. Revitalize our national security system to meet 21st century threats by restructuring and adequately funding our security agencies to function within a grand strategy for victory over those who seek to kill us or limit American power.
8. Maximize the speed and impact of medical breakthroughs by removing unnecessary obstacles that block new treatments from reaching patients and emphasizing research spending towards urgent national priorities, like brain science with its impact on Alzheimer’s, autism, Parkinson’s, mental health and other conditions knowledge of the brain will help solve.
9. Restore the proper role of the judicial branch by using the clearly delineated powers available to the president and Congress to correct, limit, or replace judges who violate the Constitution.
10. Enforce the Tenth Amendment by starting an orderly transfer of power and responsibility from the federal government back “to the states, respectively, or to the people,” as the Constitution requires. Over the next year, state and local officials and citizens will be asked to identify the areas which can be transferred back home.
That’s Tea Party principles put into actions, perfectly.
Its exactly what we have been looking for, and exactly what we should be championing… Yet when someone outlines exactly what we want, we are to dismiss it or we are racist?

Well, as to the Attorney General, I think it would be better (and more satisfying) to have him arrested, and put in handcuffs on a plane to Mexico to stand trial for manslaughter.
The Attorney General serves at the pleasure of the President of the United States, so as soon as President Gingrich says to Holder,”You’re outta here!”, he ceases to be AG.
Turning him into Inmate #18675309 will, I concede, take more effort.

I registered for this site just so I could say that! darkstar, that is the best explanation of why people are supporting Newt that I have ever seen in a comment! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT.
I have appreciated Glen Beck, A LOT, and I have learned a lot from him, especially about the Scottish preachers, and then the American (colonial) preachers, in the 1700’s, who preached that sovereignty comes to the individual from God; and history about early free black Americans. I really, really appreciated those and many other shows from Glenn Beck.

IDTS. And I agree with InstaPundit; there will be massive blow-back on this, and rightly so. There’s no excuse for thinking something so ill-informed. Newt’s speeches are on YOUTUBE, guys. His positions are not a secret.
Glenn Beck, self-described truth-teller par excellence, if you can get the straight story on Soros and Alinksy and bring us treasures of knowledge about American History, surely you can go to YouTube and watch Newt’s speeches and see that Newt is not in any way, shape or form a progressive. That is just plain silly. It’s just silly and it SERIOUSLY undermines Glenn Beck’s credibility.

And yeah, I used to watch Beck, of course, and enjoyed the history and insight he sometimes gave. I always treated it as a possibility to learn, and would further investigate things which sounded interesting to see if it were true and what-not. It was especially great when he would give history lessons which informed people of things which they likely were never taught; ie, historical Black Congressmen or Revolutionary War participants. He had a overall positive effect on people, and that was great.
But, much like I see Michele Bachmann doing now, I see Beck moving from “Tea Party Supporter” to “Me Party Mouthpiece” and that’s unfortunate. When I becomes more important then WE, no one wins; and in fact, the opposite usually takes place.
I see Beck’s foolish attacks on Newt as a great example of that.
Newt, as my above post shows, has outlined what the Tea Party wants in his “Contract”. This comes after his last “Contract”, which he fought like crazy to implement, was something the Tea Party would have been 100% behind. Newts the one who has shrunk the size of Government more then any single man still alive today, and he is the only one holding up to Reagan’s 11th amendment in this primary – despite constant attacks which must make it almost impossible to do.
Newt really compares extremely well to Churchill during his second rise to power (after the rise and great fall) – would Beck have similarly dismissed Churchill, like so many of his conservative parties voices did? Everything (and I mean, everything – the quotes are frighteningly similar) being said about Newt today was said about Winston at that time…

so I’m sorry to anyone who mistook it for my words; I should have been clearer in my post. It was, however, posted as a defense of Newt against Becks claim – because, as everyone can see, Newt has outlined the perfect Tea Party rallying plan (despite his not claiming to be “Tea Party”, like some other people do on an hourly basis…)

In real life I am what’s called a ‘skeptic’ on the internet and in other media related to the ongoing battles between pseudoscience and reality-based common sense. For many years I maintained a pro-science website debunking pseudoscientific claims of the paranormal, UFOs, bigfoot, psychics, that sort of thing, wrote articles, lectured, etc. Glenn Beck, as a method of self-promotion, employs the same technique as do psychics, seers, would-be prophets, and the like. Beck’s prognostications are of political events and in the real world, but his self-congratulatory schtick is the same as that used by psychics.
Like psychics, he tosses out by the dozens predictions of what’s going to happen, all the time, every day. In the event that one comes true, like psychics, he is quick to point out he’d predicted it, and proves it with a replay of the radio or TV show where he’d made the prediction. The implication is clear. Though he doesn’t pretend supernatural powers, of course, the implication is that his political forecasting skills are so good everyone ought to listen to and believe him.
The tricks he shares with psychics are twofold and found in the numbers and in the scoring. Beck makes a LOT of predictions, many of which on events that can only have 2-3 possible outcomes. By force of statistical probability, some of them are going to come true, as opposed to his presumed skills at foreseeing them. I have no more political forecasting skills than the next guy, but I could score as well by nothing more than pure luck if I chose events with limited potential outcomes and didn‘t get specific as to when or how a thing might happen. The key is don’t limit your chances at ‘hits’ by giving dates. If you’re predicting that such and such country will fall to the Islamists, don’t say when. That way you’ve got until the end of time for that prediction to come true. Psychics do this on purpose. Beck is sincere, I believe, but doesn’t understand the statistical mechanism. Make enough predictions, keep them as vague as possible, and some of them are bound to come true. The other half of the trickery comes with the scoring. Like psychics, Beck scores only the hits and ignores the misses, doesn’t crow about the predictions that didn’t go as he said they would. And like psychics, his predictions are often so nebulous that they can ride for decades without risk of becoming a miss.
On top of that, Beck becomes a little scary when he goes into that teary, world weary, whispering mode, full of gloom and doom and an almost clinically paranoid regard of national and world events. Whether it is sincere or affected, for me it paints him as someone to take with a grain of salt, for entertainment purposes only.
On the plus side, Beck and his radio team can be hilarious sometimes, especially when they go into super sarcastic mocking mode on events or buffoons of the political moment.
I certainly wouldn’t pick stocks or candidates based on his stuff though.

I could never watch Beck because of his quirkiness. I felt somewhat sympathetic to him, however.
But this is just a disgrace. It’s completely ridiculous. Glenn, just apologize and say, “I don’t know what I was thinking.”
I’ve never been able to follow his train of thought to be anywhere near rational. Sort of like talking physics to a six year old.

Glenn wasn’t pushed aside: he decided not to re-up when his contract ended so that he could have total ownership of his content. That Beck was canceled or otherwise driven out is Leftist cant. Congrats on believing it.
It’s perfectly OK to call Newt a progressive: he has a track record and plenty of rhetoric to prove it. It’s also perfectly OK to disagree with that assessment.
Furthermore, it’s perfectly OK to engage in rhetorical excess, even to the point of playing a phony race card for effect. “Newt is a white Obama,” he said, in essence.
But the Left has trained us to react viscerally to racial references instead of sussing out the intent of the utterance and going from there. He might as well have used the word “niggardly” to mean “stingy.”
Glenn doesn’t actually believe that Newt’s supporters are racist. How about giving HIM the benefit of the doubt?
I think Glenn Beck has made many interesting observations, however, he is beginning to inch-up on the paranoia scale.
When he left FOX to start up GBTV he began to lose his connection with rational people on a daily basis who kept him tethered to the reservation. I believe he reads a great deal, but with respect to history, I think he’s more of a bibliophile than the scholar he fancies himself to be.
The problem with alcoholics is that they have a propensity to indulge in their passion for denial. They reel it in somewhere and the pressure causes it to come out somewhere else. If he doesn’t figure this out real soon, I fear he will marginalize himself as an extremist.
Judge Napolitano needs to also reel it in. He’s getting out there and I hope someone at FOX sits down with him because along with Beck, he’s beginning to make FOX look like an incubator for people leaving the reservation. Credibility is also like trust – once it goes away…
It seems having one’s own TV show can cause good and thoughtful people to lose their heads and then they squander their success. Arsenio Hall is one who comes to mind – amongst the many.

Beck is a recovering alcoholic, by which we can assume he is past any denial he may have had or recovery wouldn’t occur because denial would obviate the need to even try.
Any problems Beck has are certainly tied to some degree to his personality, and his status as a recovering alcoholic will play into that to some unknowable degree, but we can be 100% certain this ‘passion for denial’ you attribute to alcoholics has nothing to do with it.
Clinical denial is a coping mechanism, and the person in denial is unaware of it. The minute someone becomes aware of his own denial… *poof* it’s gone. He may still resist recovery, but it’s for reasons other than denial at that point. In the clinical sense, alcoholic denial is not something one acquires because of passion for it, whatever that means.
Offered in good faith by someone who has worked as a professional clinician for 28 years in the treatment of substance abuse disorders.

It sounds like Beck was trying to just make the point that Gingrich thinks the government should be involved in most everything, just in different forms or amounts than it is now. His race comment may not exactly have been the best way to do so, but it seems like he was just trying to show that Gingrich is not entirely the conservative he is made out to be.

Beck reminds me of Arthur Godfrey in so many ways. Godfrey’s schtick also involved a weepy smile, the ever-so sad grin, the cute little homilies and folksy type sayings; just sayin. Godfrey was a megalomaniac IMHO in so many ways and Beck is going down that same path.
However, Beck is off the deep end by saying that Gingrich is a Progressive and therefor that the only reason to vote for Newt is racism; shudder. What Newt is saying is that he wants governmental responsibility and accountability brought back into DC, along with other things I like.
Newt so far is the best of the bunch still there’s a long ways to go and Newt is capable of sinking himself, as we all are, or rising above the other candidates.
We’ll see, also we’ll see how far down Beck goes; Godfrey went down pretty fast too if my memory serves me correctly.

As for Glenn, he too has gone off to some strange place and left many former listeners behind. His argument here reminds me of a child trying to fit a square peg into a round hole … he actually has no argument at all, and so he does what he has roundly criticized other for, he plays the race card. Sad.

I agree with one of the posters above, if Beck at least apologizes, fine. People make mistakes, but they have the choice and chance to apologize for it. But if Beck continues to say this sort of nonsense, I feel sorry for him. He’s completely lost it. And I was not a fan of his show, well, not all of it, but some of it.
I, too, used to listen to GB every morning on my way to work. Somewhere around the 9/12 rally GB started changing into this pseudo-evangelist, focusing more on this instead of what made him great to start with, the humor and satire. I’m afraid GB has found that his 15 minutes were about up so he pulled a hail mary.
Beck mocked Pelosi for carrying the big gavel, as if her crusade was as important as MLK. But Beck portrays himself as of founder stock “pledge our lives and fortunes and honor” he cries to his Tea party type followers, on bended knee … but then he doesn’t pledge his … he gets customers to sign up for his website and buy his books
Beck is MAKING his fortune off his savior thing … and when questioned about the income says “well I’m a capitalist” … others can PLEDGE their fortunes … he’ll MAKE his off the movement.
He is as hypocritical as Pelosi, but his product is better. Pelosi has a mob dad and sells socialism and corruption, Beck at least sells some founder stuff.
Certainly there are big problems, and Beck will be there to profit from them on the conservative side. But he will offer some decent things to consider … he can save us .. but you have to pay him.
Beck may still have good things to offer, but you have to sort through the “abnormalcy bias” he’s sold out to. But the problems we face are indeed severe … Soros is indeed a spooky dude … but Glenn seems a little off the rails here.
It will take a “multitude of counselors” to be safe … I’m counting Jacobson in that number so far … and many others. Beck has warned us repeatedly that “he’s an alcoholic” … it came up twice a week.
If we select Newt, it will be with awareness of his ability to sell us out, but his ability to take on powerful figures .. like Sununu who gave us Souter … with full assurance he was conservative.
Unless some smart conservative is hiding in the shadows, I still choose Newt over Romney/Sununu and their backhanded “crazy” attacks. Beck seems to have taken the challenge from Newt personally, even though Mitt steers clear of Beck’s histrionics.

In sporadic listening to Beck’s radio program in the last month, he has sounded frantic – even fearful. I surmised that he was a Michele Bachman supporter, for religious, faith-based reasons.
There’s no excuse for Beck to play the race card any more than there is for Obama liberals to label as racists those who oppose Obama’s policies.
Perhaps, he deludes himself that he is a Kingmaker. Frankly, I doubt that his ultimate endorsement is going to influence the selection of the Republican candidate.

That’s not a race card he played. In essence, he said that “Newt is a white Obama.” Whether he is like Obama is of course debatable.
But the Left has got all us all trained to clutch our pearls when someone says something that merely sounds like the race card, thus making sure that we cringe and wince and fall all over ourselves to apologize and to not be labeled “racist” by people who hate us anyway.

When Glenn says that Newt is a big-government progressive (just like Obama), people disagree but don’t pay much more mind. But let him say something on the Left’s hysteria list and we
[pressed Submit instead of Preview]…and we act exactly like they act: viscerally reacting to disparate elements of his utterance instead of to his intent.
Given that both Obama and Newt have styled themselves after Teddy Roosevelt this week, why not call them both progressives? It’s a fruitful topic of discussion to explore the ways in which Newt thinks that gubmint is a perfectly fine tool to use to mold society.

Those words are clear. Beck is dissing only Gingrich. Romney is running #2 in the polls, so Romney is candidate Beck is boosting here. Beck is Mormon. If Beck is against Gingrich, but for Romney, it must be about religion.
Beck is for Bachmann or Santorum. He has identified Romney as another big-gubmint progressive, a notch or two less proggy than Newt.

Romney hasn’t been on Beck’s show for YEARS, whereas Bachmann’s been on tons lately.
Romney is NOT a leader of the LDS church. I’m a Mormon, and I’m not particularly thrilled with either Romney or Huntsman.
Beck says that Romney is a progressive, too, just not as bad as Newt, and Beck hates him some progressives. And he definitely doesn’t like Harry Reid, also a Mormon.

For Beck to play the race-card is contemptible. But I wonder if it doesn’t serve as a cover for his real reason for going after Newt. That real reason could be religious instead of racial bigotry. Both Beck and Mitt Romney are Mormons, and it would be quite a feather in the cap of the Mormoms to finally have one of theirs in the White House.
Glenn Beck is a buffoon. Unfotunately, like a broken clock, he does get things right from time to time, but his histrionics and his manner put me off. He’s a used car salesman and he’s very good at selling…but this time, he’s gone too far.
I’m not a big fan of Newt, but I believe in the Reagan commandment, mainly because the MSM is trying way too hard to bash down ANY GOP candidates.
I’m going to post Darkstar’s comment on my blog…because dammitman, his points are outstanding.

Look, Newt’s my vote so far, as of right now as I type this (and I’ll tell if that changes before I hit “submit”) and please do continue supporting him and spreading the word, but just understand that labels such as “progressive” and “conservative” are used in relative contexts – meaning, if I’m just barely to the right of Santorum, I can clam he’s too “progressive” for me, and if I’m a bit left of Obama, he becomes a “conservative”.
Having said that, understand that many over-forty conservatives remember various chapters in Newt’s Long Story in which Newt did or said things that made those many conservatives feel that Newt was straying over that “liberal” line. It was still worth it to get the true conservative-position leadership on so many other issues, but he does have a knack for periodically pi**ing off the base.
As to your quote above, some of those same sorts of incidents I alluded to led to some people wondering how much of a correlation there really was between Newt’s speeches and Newt’s true beliefs.
Again, I think he’s the best choice out there, and I think he’ll be a very good president. He just needs to have sufficient mental discipline this time to avoid acting out.
Glenn Beck is a charlatan. A phoney. Always has been. Same with all his pals over at FOXNews. They’re all shills for the government. In fact EVERY broadcasting network on TV is just spinning their version of the same bulls*t. They’re all slaves to and lorded over by FCC.
