Poll Shows Democrats Favor Moderation, But Party Leadership Moves Left

Over the past decade, leaders have championed expansive government programs, climate regulations, and student loan forgiveness.

A new Gallup poll reveals a growing divide within the Democratic Party, with 41% of Democrats now saying they want the party to move toward the center. Meanwhile, support for a more liberal direction has dropped to 36%, down from 49% in 2021—marking a significant shift in voter sentiment.

Gallup explains:

“…a plurality of Democrats would like their party to become more moderate, while a similar plurality of Republicans favor the status quo for their party.”

According to Gallup, moderation is particularly popular among more affluent Democrats, while younger, white, middle-class voters remain more inclined toward progressive policies. This ideological split could have major implications for future elections, especially in swing states where centrist candidates, who rely on the suburbs,  tend to perform better than their left-wing counterparts.

Despite this, Democratic leadership continues to embrace progressive policies, creating friction between party elites and the broader electorate. Over the past decade, leaders have championed expansive government programs, climate regulations, and student loan forgiveness—issues that resonate with the party’s activist wing but are less popular among rank-and-file voters.

“For their part, few Democrats want their party to stand still politically. Of the rest, more believe it should become more moderate than more liberal.”

With moderates outperforming progressives in recent elections, strategists warn that the Democratic Party’s leftward shift—driven more by activists than voters—could cost key races. As Trump dominates the landscape, DNC progressives must decide: shift to the center or risk alienating moderates in battleground states.

Instead of moving to the center, the Dem party will push for universal mail-in ballot and no voter ID, which has been their key instrument in winning elections.

Florida has “no reason required” absentee ballots, and no problems counting them.

Well … it should be stopped, no matter what. One day for voting. No 40% of people sending in absentee ballots – I don’t care how secure they might be in one state for the duration of one governor’s tenure. IT is, and will always be, an open invitation to cheat.

Agreed. Make it an official holiday. Heck, retail stores can offer discounts with proof of an “I voted” sticker!

While I am all for declaring Nov 5th a Federal Holiday and requiring everyone to show up in person with ID if they want to vote with exceptions like deployed military etc, Florida has passed Voter laws that are pretty strong in weeding out any fraud with absentee ballots. They are not just mass mailed to addresses. The person must request one and then provide an address, last 4 of the SSN, drivers license etc

BTW, to offer more details on my position – mail-in ballots violate one of the most important aspects of our election processes – secrecy.

It was very important for a person’s votes to be secret. So, a union could try and buy someone’s vote, but they could never really know that that person voted the way he was paid to vote, since the vote was secret and there was no receipt. This aspect is of utmost importance. When you have mail-in ballots that people sit around the table and fill out in view of others then you have lost that secrecy. Now, an organization can buy someone’s vote and can sit at the table and watch him fill out his ballot to insure that he voted th way he was being paid to vote. This cannot be allowed and there is NO WAY to mitigate this problem.

Mail-in ballots (or any ballots filled out at home and brought in) can be allowed. Not for any reason.

Grrr … I know that everyone knows what I meant to write, but … at the bottom:

“Mail-in ballots (or any ballots filled out at home and brought in) CANNOT be allowed.”

I hate when I do that!

Same day voting strongly favored retirees, people without jobs and government workers. It disfavored people with jobs, particularly people with children who can’t stand in line for 4 hours after they get off work to vote. Stop thinking about your personal situation and start looking at the big picture.

Making it a national holiday would solve that. There are work arounds.

Through most of the history of this country, people managed to get to the polls and they were more likely to have jobs and kids than moderns do.

I’ve never stood in line for any length of time, much less 4 hours in 60 years, of voting, and never heard of such a thing until quite recently.

The same people coming up with reasons why same day voting shouldn’t be a thing are the same ones having no problem showing up for the outrage protest march of the week

Don’t believe it, it’s who counts the votes that matter and that can turn on a dime
Get you A&$ off the couch and vote

Only legit military and medical reasons should be allowed to vote by ballot

a plurality of Democrats would like their party to become more moderate,

Pure BS. They are lying. They just want to get power back so they can finish off the US. They never had any problems with all of the totally insane, sick, demented stuff they shoved down our throats. They all cheered it on.

They are just trying to hide who and what they are for a little bit.

Many are hiding, but there are those that feared speaking out. Look at how the extremists are. There is more freedom and it will grow, if things so far are any indication.

It’s like that in other places, too, where Europeans and even Arabs are starting, not only to speak out in public, but be heard.

The problem for Democrats is that the anti-American leaders are still in control and they are as spiteful as they are dumb.

The problem for Democrats is that the anti-American leaders are still in control and they are as spiteful as they are dumb.

That’s for sure.

But I don’t think the bulk of Dems are as you think. Even if they were, they could still be bullied right back to the same positions the minute the nutcases took power again. They are sheep. SIck, deranged sheep with Mad Sheep disease and 4 different kinds of nasty STDs.

Paraphrase by Paula:

“Polls Show Democrats are Stupid”

A lot depends on whether one is a progressive and fundamentally anti-American, or liberal and fundamentally pro-American. Liberals, sadly, were/are too weak and emasculated to confront and beat back the progressives or question TDS dogma. Thankfully, progressives are self-destructing and success is the best revenge.

Christmas just won’t stop comin’.
I cannot wait to see David Hogg end his career as a wet spot on the highway.

Hmmm I’d rather see him end his career working night shift at an inner-city 7-11 ahem, surrounded, by a gang of his “mail-in ballot voters.”

To a democrat moderation is socialism.

alaskabob in reply to ztakddot. | February 15, 2025 at 5:21 pm

The path of socialism and communism leads to the same outcome, but just in different time. Communism is socialism in a hurry (Lenin).

Until the d/prog move on from Cray Cray policies of Trans primacy, pronoun/tone policing, censorship, open borders, soft on crime, runaway govt spending, environmental extremism, war on fossil fuels and trade policies that don’t prioritize US workers and the average person in the broad middle 70% of workers/families they won’t achieve a long lasting electoral majority outside blue enclaves.

Those horrible people! Next thing you know, they’re going to be wanting some say in who the candidates are!
