NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Calls for Wealth Redistribution, Doubles Down When Called Out

Last week, during an online address that had to do primarily with education, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said frankly, “Our mission is to redistribute wealth.”
Apparently, the exodus of taxpayers from Manhattan is not happening quickly enough for the mayor, and he wanted to speed it along.
You may recall then-candidate Obama’s famous exchange with ‘Joe the Plumber’ in 2008. When Obama was caught on camera saying he believed in spreading the wealth around, it led to a damaging news cycle that lasted for days.
Now, years later, de Blasio is just coming right out and saying it. See the video below:

The mayor was called out for this comment on FOX News and then doubled down on it.

“Fox News Got It Exactly Right. Amen”: De Blasio Double Downs On Plan To “Redistribute Wealth”
During the Democratic primary, I wrote about New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and his “eat the rich” pitch for votes. He pledged to “tax the hell out of the rich.” It did not work. Not only did de Blasio never got to one percent nationally. Worse yet, he polled at zero in his own New York city with a 58 percent unfavorable rating.
Yet, De Blasio later continued his anti-capitalism agenda including using the pandemic to renew calls to curtail capitalism and demonstrating a shocking lack of knowledge of basic economics. Now de Blasio has declared the purpose of the New York public schools as redistribution of wealth and doubled down on that call after being criticized on Fox News.
Turley provides de Blasio’s response:
I’m going to say it one more time in case Fox News is watching again: ‘NYC mayor sees the redistribution of wealth as an important factor toward ending structural racism in education.’ Exactly right. I don’t get to say it very often, but Fox News got it exactly right. Amen.
We are going to fight structural racism through redistribution, so Fox News, congratulations, fair and balanced coverage right there. If we think we’re going to deal with structural racism and segregation without redistribution of wealth, we’re kidding ourselves,” the mayor added. “Nothing changes unless you put the resources behind it.”
This supposed effort to use the schools to fight racism with redistribution is right in line with the controversy unfolding at New York’s exclusive Dalton School.
The left is using education and tax dollars to pursue a political agenda of social justice that has nothing to do with traditional classroom teaching.
Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly recently pulled her kids out of a private school in New York City for this very reason.

Seriously, any time a writer refers to “social justice,” he or she should put the term in scare quotes.
“Social justice” has nothing to do with justice. It is just another innocuous-sounding synonym for Communism.
The same as Community means Communism.

The ‘government leadership’ Governor’s School in Richmond, VA, sponsored a black female speaker at a regional Model Congress a few years ago who advocated outright property confiscation of second homes under the theory that people don’t need two homes. When I called the Richmond Times-Dispatch to report that parents might be upset to hear that their children were being taught communism without their knowledge, the minority (Hispanic?) male reporter simultaneously doubted me that the speaker said that and appeared to agree with the communist idea! I never saw a newspaper story….

A bipartisan group of New Jersey lawmakers say New York in particular is unfairly taxing Garden State residents who are now working from home and whose tax dollars should stay in the state.
New Jersey may soon take an initial step to quantify how much it could gain if New York stopped taxing remote workers, wading into what could become a political war with its next-door neighbor.

Oddly, the Asians that arrived in the west in the mid 1800s, and subjected to racism every bit as much as blacks have succeeded. For their success they are now discriminated against, again. de Blasio is doing a good job of distributing wealth away from New York City as the ultra-wealthy move elsewhere.
Has everyone forgotten the footage from this last summer in Manhattan? Caravans of mutts lining the streets to loot and pillage? Remember that? Well, the PTB in the city do. What de Blasio says and what will actually come to pass are going to be two different things. The barbarians living the city have to be controlled. To do this the city government will throw them some bones and promise them more. The rich do not mind paying tribute, to live in NYC. They do object to being torn apart by rampaging barbarian hordes.

Mr. DeBlasio should redistribute the wealth if he can pass the legislation. NYC voters deserve what they voted for. But I do not live in NYC and will not allow my wealth, such as it is, to be redistributed. I also get the feeling those in NYC who can will leave. Mr. DeBlasio can redistribute whatever is left.

NYC is in big trouble from the Covid-19 driven exodus of upper middle class and wealthy families to the millions of square feet of empty office space to the miles of empty store and restaurant fronts across every borough of the city to the migration of financial firms to FL its tax base is shriveling and will continue to do so. It is one thing when a few hedge funds pack up for a warmer climate but when Goldman Sachs says they are setting up shop in FL look out.
Someone above cited the stat that 54% of NYC residents pay no income tax but perhaps more shockingly, the top 2% of earners pay over 50% of the taxes in NYC. A few hundred very high earning families pack up and move and the city will be destitute. Forget about DiBlasio’s grand socialist visions, the city won’t be able to provide basic services like police, fire, transportation and trash pickup in such a scenario an it is very likely to play out in the next few years. Detroit on the Hudson.

Yeah this article is a tad flawed. The issue De Blasio is talking about is the lack of tech for poorer students during the Coronavirus. Rich kids can easily afford a fancy laptop, poor ones can’t. That’s the issue which is not mentioned in the article at all. Whilst De Blasio may have other intentions and policies that go beyond this on the simple observation that poor students can’t be taught online of they have a shit computer is a reasonable issue to address.
It’s a reasonable issue to address, but not through redistribution of wealth. Those are De Blasio’s words, so I don’t see how you can refuse to hold him responsible for them. Unless you think there are any circumstances in which wealth “redistribution” (i.e. stealing) is justified.
Wealth redistribution can be carried out via more means than just stealing. There are a variety of policy instruments. For example the higher income tax for the wealthy is one such instrument. Wealth distribution is a blunt statement what we are really talking about is creating a fair society. If some one earns a lot of money from high market value activities should they keep all of that, how do you value nurses and teachers. If you go by market value alone a nurse isn’t worth very much but in terms of societal value is more valuable than a hedge fund manager. How do you encourage those to become nurses rather than hedge fund managers (those with talent). Not an easy question. My personal view is that there are progressive policies that could have a positive impact I also believe that there are free market policies that ensure a competitive market and greater wealth for all. The real question is what’s the right balance.
I seem to recall that neo-communist idiot, William Wilhelm (since re-branded as “de Blasio,” in a transparent attempt to make himself sound more appropriately “ethnic”) owns a nice townhouse in Brooklyn — sounds about time for hizzoner to sell the place and distribute the proceeds to his less-fortunate peasant comrades, or, alternatively, let a few families of peasants move in with him.
The vile and hypocritical Dhimmi-crats are big on extracting “charity” from their subjects, but, they aren’t so big on coughing up dough, themselves, when it comes out of their own miserly pockets.
1. His name change was not ‘a transparent attempt to make himself sound more appropriately “ethnic”’. For one thing Germans are just as ethnic as Italians. Especially in NYC. For another, he started using his mother’s name instead of his father’s long before he was in politics, or ever had a thought about the relative political value of German and Italian names. He did it to spite his father, not for any political reason. And really, why shouldn’t he use his mother’s name? Who says a person has to take his father’s name and not his mother’s?
2. De Blasio owns two houses on 11th St, Brooklyn, between 6th and 7th Aves. Although they are attached to their neighbors, that’s not because they’re small but because the neighborhood was built before the age of cars, so there was no need for driveways. So I wouldn’t call them “townhouses”, which in my mind are smaller houses that are built to replace full-sized houses, multiple townhouses using every scrap of the land formerly occupied by a single house and its yard.
If this nutcase wants to be a Communist so badly, why doesn’t he move to Moscow, Beijing or Caracas? I’ll contribute to the one way ticket and shipping all of his belongings provided he turns over his passport to our embassy on arrival! He can take his Commie wife too!
