Germany’s Merkel Rejects Trump’s Invite for G7 Summit
“Merkel Spurns Trump,” says German state broadcaster.
German Chancellor ‘rebuffed’ U.S. President Donald Trump’s invitation to attend next month’s G7 Summit, the German media reports. “As of today, considering the overall pandemic situation, she cannot agree to her personal participation on a trip to Washington,” German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Friday.
“Merkel Spurns Trump,” Germany’s state-run ARD news outlet reported. A gathering of the world leaders hosted by the U.S. president at this time could boost his reelection prospects, the German state broadcaster feared. The “summit could turn out a success for Trump, who will get good images for his election campaign,” ARD added.
The White House sees the proposed summit as a major sign of normalcy after months of Wuhan coronavirus-induced emergency. President Trump believes there would be “no greater example of reopening” than hosting top world leaders at the summit in Washington, White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said on Tuesday.
Germany’s ARD reported Merkel’s decision:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will apparently not fly to the G7 summit in the United States. President Donald Trump had invited her to the [meeting] in June in Washington. Chancellor thanked Trump for the invitation, the government spokesman said. As of today, Merkel “cannot agree to her personal participation, i.e., travel to Washington, considering the overall pandemic situation.” Chancellor will continue to monitor the development of the pandemic. For weeks, Trump has been trying to spread optimism regarding the coronavirus pandemic and sees the prospect for country’s fast recovery. He has been vehemently urging the states for a speedy normalization and the lifting of restrictions despite many cases of infection and deaths.
Critics of the president believe that he is worried about his reelection prospects, given the coronavirus situation and rise in unemployment numbers. A “real” [in-person] summit could turn out a success for Trump, who will get good images for his election campaign.” [translated by the author]
Merkel’s government has been upset by the foreign policy pursued by the current administration. President Trump has slammed Germany for repeatedly defaulting on its NATO spending pledge. He has opposed the Russo-German gas pipeline which seeks to connect Russian gas fields to central European countries. “They pay billions of dollars to Russia and we have to defend them against Russia,” Trump said at the 2018 NATO summit. Berlin has been spearheading the efforts to bypass economic sanctions placed on Iran after the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal.
Merkel and top figures of her government made no secret of their disapproval of the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The German political establishment had been very supportive of the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Ahead of the presidential election, leading German politicians viciously attacked Trump’s candidacy, much to the delight of the mainstream media and the Clinton campaign. The then-German Foreign Minister, and country’s current President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier called candidate Trump a “hate preacher.” German Vice-Chancellor at that time, Sigmar Gabriel, warned the U.S. voters of the impending economic doom if they were to vote for Trump. A Trump victory would mean “shrinking GDP, fewer jobs and higher unemployment,” Merkel’s right-hand man predicted. The support went beyond the rhetoric. As I reported in November 2016, German government handed over millions of euros to the Clinton Foundation in the election year.
Unlike Merkel, the British Prime Minister has agreed to attend the summit. “Boris Johnson agrees to go to G7 summit in person in phone call with Donald Trump,” UK’s Daily Mail reported on Friday. “Both leaders agreed it was important for the summit to meet in person if possible.”

A fine sentiment, but what happens if we leave?
The Germans get cozy with the Russians (remember Hitler and Stalin playing kissy-kissy until Adolf decided not to play anymore?) with Poland sandwiched between them and the Baltic states to the northeast being hung out to dry.
As much as we’re disgusted with Merkel, our leaving would be a poor strategy in the long run. It’s bad enough now. Let’s not make it worse.

Those troops are as good as gone
Trump should raise the stakes, and start pulling US troops out. The Germans will dump Merkel rather quickly.
Well, with the predictions of what Germans ‘would’ do, let me suggest that a fair number of Germans don’t see the need for either NATO or for an American military presence in their country.
Any German born after 1989 has known only a united Germany. Germans born before that remember the Cold War, and 1/4 of them were on the other side in the East. The socialist-green-left has had plenty of time to mis-remember history.
I’ll suggest that there are plenty of Germans who would be happy to see us gone.
Personally, I’d like to oblige them. NATO is dead. The need for it died in 1991. If Europe and the U.S. believe that there is a need for a military alliance, say so and say why, openly, and commit the resources to it. But NATO is dead.
The problem is that it is a strategic deployment location for the Middle East and other nearby areas of hostility and concern.
The other problem is that any move to significantly withdraw troops will be seen as blood in the water to cut the military budget for Dems and their pet projects. They will cut a billion for the military and spend 10 billion on propaganda-esque “social projects”. It happened under Obama, and it will happen again if they seize power.

I politely suggest that the U.S. has no reason to have a military presence in Europe. If our needs for access to the Middle East requires a path through Europe, we can make a deal with Italy.
The world is going to realign. World markets are going to realign.
This whole thing with China has been a pyramid scheme: they turn out crap for the rest of the world using slave wages, and the deliver crap. (NOTHING of Chinese manufacture is worth a damn. Compare to Japanese products that are still working 50 years later.)
If we stop buying China’s shit and start manufacturing things here, Amazon will be out of business, prices will rise, but quality will return, and there will be more meaningful manfacturing jobs. That said, we’ll be back to the 1970s economy, but we will be energy independent.

The administration in general and PDJT in particular are saddened to learn that Chancellor Merkel does not feel confident in attending the upcoming G-7 conference due to her nations inability to respond effectively to the corona virus.
The U.S. stands ready to assist our friend and ally should Chancellor Merkel request that aid. Unfortunately, due to the previously undisclosed severity of the situation in Germany the administration will be suspending all travel from Germany to the U.S. and will work with the German embassy, consulates and diplomatic personnel to ensure the swift repatriation of German Nationals back to Germany.
This will be a temporary restriction, remaining in place until Chancellor Merkel feels confident in her ability to travel. The thoughts and prayers of the President and the American People are with the the people of Germany in this moment.
