Sen. Thad Cochran Will Retire on April 1 Due to Health Concerns
Served in the Senate since 1978.
Senate Appropriations Chairman Thad Cochran (R-MS), 80, has announced he will retire on April 1 due to health concerns. From Roll Call:
“I regret my health has become an ongoing challenge,” the Mississippi Republican said in a statement.
“I intend to fulfill my responsibilities and commitments to the people of Mississippi and the Senate through the completion of the 2018 appropriations cycle, after which I will formally retire from the U.S. Senate,” Cochran added.
He stayed home last fall for a month due to urinary tract infections.
The people of Mississippi elected Cochran to the Senate in 1978 after he served the state in the House for six years.
Gov. Phil Bryant (R) will appoint a replacement and then the state will hold a special election to finish Cochran’s term, which ends in 2021.

Thanks, Vichy Mitchy, for making sure this superannuated swamp creature could slither into office by inviting Democrat voters to crossover and calling the conservative candidate a raaaaacist in 2014.
I wonder how many members of the news media have the gumption to mention that John McCain continues to absent himself from his job?

I read the news of Cochran’s planned (and LONG overdue!) retirement with mixed feelings: Glee that he’s finally hauling his sorry ass back to MS, but also frustration that – with the invaluable help of the Chinless Wonder (McConnell) – he screwed Chris NcDaniel, the truly CONSERVATIVE challenger in 2014, painting McDaniel as a racist, which was a BIG falsehood!! he won the seat (again!). Millions of Tea Party loyalists were just pissed off, so, buh-bye, Thad – don’t let the door hit you on the back where the good Lord made a crack!!
This will mean another battle between the Republican leadership establishment and conservatives. They’ll use all the money and dirty politics available to prevent a conservative nominee, and to throw the election to the Democrats if there is one. It’s time to go to war with the party again, and try to elect enough good people to overturn the leadership, however long it may take.
