GOP in Danger: Ayotte May Lose Her Senate Seat

GOP in Danger: Ayotte May Lose Her Senate Seat

Pick a side, Senator.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the tough Congress elections headed into November, especially since the GOP could easily loses its majority in the Senate. North Carolina could lose one of its GOP senators while New Hampshire could lose its only GOP senator in Kelly Ayotte. The tough reelection has led her to distance herself from GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump. Ayotte said she would vote for Trump, but stopped before giving him her full endorsement. This has frustrated the independent voters she needs to win.

She didn’t even attend a rally attended by Vice President candidate Mike Pence where he told the crowd they need her “back in the U.S. Senate.” As The Washington Post described it, she “is stuck between Donald Trump and a hard place.”

The GOP can lose its majority if the Democrats win five seats or four if Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton wins the White House:

In two states where Mr. Trump trails badly, recent surveys have shown the incumbents, Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, trailing their Democratic challengers. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll last week, showing Mrs. Clinton ahead by nine percentage points in North Carolina, found Richard M. Burr, who is seeking a third term in the Senate, virtually tied with his Democratic opponent.

Ayotte hopes her position showcases her “independence.” She promised to stand up to Trump if he wins the presidency and tries to show that her opponent Gov. Maggie Hassan (D) will only “toe the party line.”

The Republicans have 46% of the primary voters, but polls have shown 17% of voters overall remain undecided:

Her decision, however, to straddle the fence could become untenable for the approximately 14 percent of independent voters that make up New Hampshire’s electorate. Trump is lagging behind Hillary Clinton by more than eight percentage points, according to the Real Clear Politics polling average in New Hampshire — despite winning the first-in-the-nation primary in February.

And some undecided conservatives think Ayotte should drop her party’s volatile presidential nominee quickly.

One of those undecided voters told the Post that she’s a fake and disappointed she plans to vote for him.

Also, Hassan has grabbed onto Ayotte’s wavering and used it against her:

“She is standing with Donald Trump,” Hassan said in an interview in her office on Thursday.

“I think she’s just trying to distance herself from Donald Trump and mislead people on her own record,” Hassan said. “The fact that she’s willing to vote for Donald Trump and vote to put him in the Situation Room with access to nuclear codes tells you how much she’s puts political party ahead of anything else.”

Ayotte has received help from outside groups and none are mentioning Trump in their ads. She has also put space between herself and Trump’s positions:

She rejected his proposed temporary ban on Muslim immigration, called his criticism of a Hispanic judge “offensive and wrong,” and said she was “appalled” by his weeklong feud with the Muslim family of a fallen U.S. soldier.

On Saturday, she also broke with Trump’s repeated suggestion that a loss in November would be evidence that the nation’s election system is rigged. “I have confidence in our election system,” Ayotte said.

The senator, a prominent voice on national security issues, would not say whether she trusted Trump with the codes to the nation’s nuclear arsenal. Instead, she noted Congress’ oversight role.

“We have a strong system of checks and balances,” she said, promising to play an active role in national security whether Clinton or Trump wins the presidency. “I think he’ll surround himself, I assume, with people who will help him understand.”

Unfortunately for her and others, Hillary and her campaign said they would invest $1 billion to help unseat these vulnerable Republicans in Congress.

The Democrats “raised $12 million in July, continuing a historic fundraising streak for a presidential year when Democrats don’t control the House.” That amount puts them at $133 million through July. the RNC only raised $114.5 million through July.

Comments

No sympathy for Ayotte who fits the description of RINO. NH has in the last 30 years been captured by the liberal gravity coming out of Boston.

“Oh we love NH. Clean air; less traffic; less government.”

“Lets change it!”

Exactly right about Ayotte being a RINO, and she’s in the situation she’s in by her own hand.

Ok, so I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Yet it seems to me that not sympathizing with her is one thing, but is losing the Senate majority to the Liberals worth the cost? If you want Trump to accomplish anything as POTUS, then giving the Senate to the liberals is not the way to help him do so.

You can’t have it both ways. You wanted Trump in office supposedly for all the “wonderful” things he was going to accomplish, but then you tie his hands by wanting give the Senate and possibly the House to the Liberals. Someone want to explain that for me?

I understand what you are saying, but the problem is – what will convince voters to a) show up, and b) mark the ballot for her? So far, she has done everything possible to piss off conservatives – she aligns far too often with John McCain and Lindsay Graham. Her ads are all about Democrat issues – where are our issues? Where are these:
      – border security
      – immigration policy (no amnesty, deport illegals, make it more difficult for illegals to stay)
      – 2nd Amendment
      – Lower spending (stand with Cruz on the budget instead of being vocal against him)
      – Lower taxes
      – Liberal Judicial appointments
      – the rise of the federal bureaucracy
      – removing officials for misconduct
      – etc etc etc

On every one of these issues core to so-called “Republicans” she has taken a walk.

I’m done with her. This NH voter will not be voting for Ayotte.

But she IS endorsed…along with ALL GOP incumbents…by the T-rump campaign.

Blowing up the GOP! Yaaaaaaaah…!!!

(Dupes)

“One and done” may have to be the status quo until we get people elected who will support the Constitution instead of party first. They are to represent us, so they should act like it.

Don’t know anything about Ayotte, but from this little bit of stuff here, she sounds like a major-league loser.

Subotai Bahadur | August 23, 2016 at 2:28 pm

If the #NeverTrumpers can declare an absolute right to oppose the Republican presidential candidate, Trump supporters have a similar right not to support Republican candidates who oppose the Republican presidential candidate.

Funny how that works. Their rules.

So what if the “GOP” loses the Senate?

They’ve acted like an extension of the DNC for 8-years so what will change?

    VaGentleman in reply to MJN1957. | August 24, 2016 at 8:09 am

    If true:
    Why hasn’t Garland been approved?
    Why hasn’t gun control passed?

The republicans are far from perfect, but they are far from being a dem rubber stamp.

    bushrat in reply to MJN1957. | August 24, 2016 at 8:15 am

So what, you’re plan is for Trump to act like Obama and bypass congress, ignore the rule of law and issue hundreds of executive orders? So two wrongs make a right? I thought this was one of the things we wanted to correct; the corruption in the WH?

She caused her own problem!
I will vote for Trump but not support him.

R-I-N-O

GOP reacts quickly and decisively … to attack more tea party and conservative candidates.

great unknown | August 23, 2016 at 4:07 pm

Voted for her, and donated to her campaign, last time. But other than her current 2A support, she is maximally RINO.

One of her biggest flaws is signing on to the Gillibrand CASA act, which essentially strips due process rights from men accused of rape.

Tough decision for me this year.

Ragspierre in reply to great unknown. | August 23, 2016 at 4:16 pm

Absolutely right. I would have voted for her primary opponent (I guess).

I’ll never vote again for “John Wayne” Cornyn. I’ll “vote my conscience” and not be fooled again.

We all have strong opinions about pols but one thing we all can agree on and that is taking a stand and sticking with it. Ayotte is a fence sitter except on the things that she knows are universally popular with the libs in her state. Gun control, patriotism and individual rights not so much.

Like the vaunted 2014 congress accomplished so much. If she dies, she dies.

Look, this is LOCAL politics. The Senator has to appeal to the desires of her constituency, as she sees them. This is how one wins local elections. Her problem is determining what the voters want, in NH. If she guesses correctly, she wins. If she guesses incorrectly, she loses.

In this case, she has apparently decided that her constituency is not part of the anti-establishment movement that Trump has tapped into and is currently riding to possible victory. We’ll see if Ayotte is right or wrong in November.

One last thing, recent history has shown that there is no practical difference between Republicans and Democrats who are currently members of the Congress. So, from Trump’s perspective, I don’t think which party holds a certain chair makes any real difference.

    Ragspierre in reply to Mac45. | August 23, 2016 at 6:04 pm

“…she has apparently decided that her constituency is not part of the anti-establishment movement that Trump has tapped into…”

Oh, silly boi, Der Donald has ENDORSED her…!!!

Didn’t you get the memo…??? He’s endorsed ALLLLLLLL teh “Establishment”. It’s who he IS…!!!

Barry in reply to Ragspierre. | August 23, 2016 at 6:24 pm

In the alternate universe, trump did not endorse and Rags complained about trump not supporting the R party.

Ragspierre in reply to Ragspierre. | August 23, 2016 at 6:29 pm

Didn’t you get the memo…??? He’s endorsed ALLLLLLLL teh “Establishment”. It’s who he IS…!!!

That would be in REALITY, liar.

Barry in reply to Ragspierre. | August 23, 2016 at 7:58 pm

        “He’s endorsed ALLLLLLLL teh “Establishment”.”

No, he hasn’t endorsed Cruz, so not all the establishment.

“That would be in REALITY, liar.”

Ooh, there is that rags word specialty again. Find a lie and post it for everyone to see.

        Crickets, I’m hearing crickets.

Ragspierre in reply to Barry. | August 23, 2016 at 8:28 pm

          No, you lying SOS.

The T-rump campaing EXPRESSLY endorsed ALLLLLLLLLLL incumbents.

          Liar.

Barry in reply to Barry. | August 24, 2016 at 12:12 am

“The T-rump campaing EXPRESSLY endorsed ALLLLLLLLLLL incumbents.”

Uh huh. Show me the endorsement of Cruz.

          Or any lie I’ve told.

          Either will work.

          Jeb Bush endorsed Cruz.
Glen Beck the insane endorsed Ted Cruz.
          Good company.

        Mac45 in reply to Ragspierre. | August 23, 2016 at 7:59 pm

So, what you are saying is that Trump, the person who is supposedly destroying the Republican Party, is actually behaving like a loyal party member and endorsing even those candidates who have not endorsed him. IN fact, if I read your post correctly, he is endorsing any Republican who has not attacked him, personally, or has actively worked against him, not just for another primary candidate.

If only the rest of the Party were as team spirited.

By the way, have any Hillary for Prez t-shirts for sale?

Ragspierre in reply to Ragspierre. | August 23, 2016 at 8:29 pm

        No. You stupid liar.

What I AM saying is that Der Donald, DESTROYER OF THE STATUS QUO, is EXPRESSLY endorsing the status quo.

        Just as I predicted.

murkyv in reply to Ragspierre. | August 23, 2016 at 8:51 pm

IOn case you missed it there, big guy.

The primaries are over. Trump is endorsing the Republican party candidates.

Would it make you feel better if Trump endorsed the Democrat candidates?

Ragspierre in reply to Ragspierre. | August 23, 2016 at 8:57 pm

          Umm…

          Stupid…

T-rump was supposed to BLOW UP the GOP.

          Instead, he endorsed it.

          How stupid are you?

“Would it make you feel better if Trump endorsed the Democrat candidates?”

He might like that. His constant trump diatribe is an endorsement of Hillary.

Imagine if 1/10th of the visceral hatred thrown at trump by the nevertrump crowd had been expended against Obama, Hillary, or the democrats in general.
Makes one wonder what is going on. ($$$$)

“T-rump was supposed to BLOW UP the GOP.”

No, he was “supposed” to blow up the GOPe. Signed, sealed, and delivered many months ago.

Everything else is just campaign optics, as you well know.

murkyv in reply to Ragspierre. | August 24, 2016 at 9:25 am

Hate to break this to you little man, but Trump DID blow up and expose the GOPe.

That’s why the Republican elite are so upset.

I believe Trump will privately apologize to Ted Cruz. Ted Cruz will accept Donald Trump’s apology. Ted Cruz will support Donald Trump. Donald Trump will nominate Ted Cruz for the Supreme Court. Then Trump will appoint William Jacobsen when the next Scotus opening occurs.*

*It could happen.

    dunce1239 in reply to Callipygian1. | August 23, 2016 at 9:27 pm

I was an early Cruz supporter, but he lost his way and took campaigning personal and became petulant. It is time for him to come out publically and as a practicing christian forgive Trump to cleanse his own heart and clear the deck for November. I suspect what he finds most objectionable about Trump is his strong border stance.

Politicians always go by what is best for them individually and not the country. Nothing new here.

Ya can’t fix stupid.

What she’s really done is alienate the Republican base.

That’s why she’s in trouble.

For those who think Cruz should unite the party, that was to be the winner’s job, i.e. Trump. Instaed he attacked all of us who supported Cruz. Had Cruz just ignored all the personal attacks against his father and wife, i would have lost all respect for Cruz. And those attacks came from Trump himself, not a surrogate. Cruz actually did support Trump as much as possible. For example, he said you need to vote for the candidate that “will build a wall.” That is Trump. Finaly, the candidates, including Cruz did not pledge to “endorse” the republican candidate, but to “support” him. He did this. But the Trumpettes expect everyone to prostrate themselves for Trump like they have.

murkyv in reply to lawdoc. | August 24, 2016 at 9:31 am

Just what was the “personal attack” on Ted’s wife?

A re-Tweet of an unflattering photo. That’s it.

Sites like the one you are posting on do the same thing with screen caps of politicians in mid word, eyes closed, etc.

Ted is just thin skinned and petty.

That’s why he lost my support and that of millions of people who were huge supporters of him before he showed his butt and his true self.

Ragspierre in reply to murkyv. | August 24, 2016 at 12:20 pm

Of course, you are a liar.

“I’ll spill the beans on Heidi Cruz”.

Plus, he had his surrogates dumping on Mrs. Cruz’s depressive episode.

      T-rump sucking cultist.

After we vote out all the rinos and Trump loses the election, what next?

Hillary is pres, Schumer is senate leader, we have 4 years of liberal court appointees (at all levels), obamacare is saved by conversion to single payer, the bill of rights becomes meaningless, etc.

Other than hyperbolic rhetoric and feeling good that you purged the party, do any of you geniuses have a plan to deal with that reality?

The republicans who are saying “she’s not conservative enough for my vote” are the ones who put Obama into office for a second term because Romney didn’t turn you on enough.

Let’s cut off our nose to spite our face again.

When will you realize that you need a moderate conservative to win in nh. A radical conservative will not win ever in nh. Or the US for that matter.

It seems like I’ve spent most of my adult life holding my nose & voting for these RINO quislings. And, yes, I will do so yet again for Ayotte, despite her nearly absolute betrayal of the conservative values she claimed to hold in 2010.

The place to remove these dimocrat lite fellow traveler elitists is in the primaries – see, e.g., Cantor – in the general, even a RINO like Ayotte is far preferable to a loon married to a CAIR insider. Hassan is simply another André Carson / Keith Ellison / Barry Sodero stealth koranimal seeking to destroy America. Even a 27% CR rated RINO is preferable by many orders of magnitude.

She is a RINO POS. Good riddance!
