Palinizing Scott Walker by Proxy

From my point of view, the single best moment of the 2008 election season was Sarah Palin’s speech at the Republican Party convention:

Palin was so genuine, so impassioned, and so appealing — despite lacking cherished Beltway connections and credentials — that she instantly became a target.

One of the most ridiculous attacks centered on her personal beauty, and terms such as “naughty librarian” were launched in a nuclear-scale War on One Woman.

That Scott Walker has similar appeal is proven by the various attacks already being made, despite the fact that the first caucus vote has not been cast. However, the attack on good looks can’t truly be launched against him directly.

So, call the latest progressive response “naughty librarian by proxy”.

“Dear Tell All,” troubled reader Kate Mallet wrote, “I can’t help noticing that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker picks beautiful young women to be the spokespeople for his administration and his campaigns.”

Mallet mentions four dazzling, alluring spokeswomen currently or previously employed by Walker: Laurel Patrick, Alleigh Marré, Jocelyn Webster and Ciara Matthews.

The reader then offers up a malignant conspiracy of beauty on par with the evils of tobacco companies.

“The thinking seems to be: We’ll use this eye candy to make our ‘product’ more palatable, just as the advertising industry has always done with noxious products like cigarettes and fast food,” Mallet proposes.

“What does it say to the young girls of Wisconsin who hope to do important work when they grow up, regardless of their looks?” she asks indignantly. “In my opinion Walker’s approach sets women back 50 years, to the pre-feminist Mad Men era.”

Of course, pundits have already targeted Walker’s lack of a college degree, trying to show that he just isn’t smart enough to cut it as President. And while I find the lack of an Ivy League degree more of a feature than a bug, a similar line of attack was also used against Palin.

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin seems to have switched colleges at least six times in six years, including two stints at the University of Idaho before graduating from there in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain’s campaign.

While our press showed a notable lack of interest in Obama’s academic achievements, I would assert that even if he gradated with a 4.0 from each institution he attended, the domestic and foreign policy results indicate that book smarts do not automatically translate into great leadership skills.

Some are also criticizing Walker for not having foreign policy credentials:

On a recent Monday at Washington’s Willard InterContinental hotel, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was schooled on the world by some of the GOP’s leading foreign-policy lights. In a two-hour tutorial, seated around a table in the Taft Room sipping sodas and coffee, they used detailed regional maps to lead the likely presidential candidate on a tour of the globe’s hot spots: Israel and the Middle East, Latin America, Russia and Ukraine.​

The reason for Walker’s crash course was urgent: He has not impressed many leading Republicans with his grasp of foreign affairs. He drew mockery from members of both parties last month for refusing to talk about foreign policy on a trip to London and then for comparing his experience battling labor protesters to taking on Islamic State terrorists.

I seem to recall that Vice President Joe Biden was suppose to add foreign policy gravitas. Unless international relations now consist of creeping out women and children, I think Walker already outshines our current “smart set” in his current role as a Midwestern governor.

Again, this tactic comes straight out of the anti-Palin playbook. The progressive entertainment industry had to create an inane skit mocking a thoughtful comment Palin made about Putin and Russia — all of which has subsequently come true, I might add.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if the progressive pundits accused Scott Walker of faking a pregnancy.
