SUNY Brockport hosts ‘BIPOC’ faculty panel amid DEI rollbacks

The State University of New York at Brockport will host a panel focused on the “lived experiences” of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) faculty as colleges nationwide dismantle Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.

The university’s 24th Annual Diversity Conference includes “Navigating Academia: BIPOC Faculty Experiences to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” a panel focused on the “lived experiences” of “BIPOC educators navigating academia in Predominantly White Institutions.” The session will use “storytelling and an interactive panel discussion” intended to promote awareness, diversity, inclusion, and community.

The conference comes as the Trump administration has pressed educational institutions to comply with federal civil rights law and eliminate race-based preferences. The U.S. Department of Education has said that more than 300 colleges and universities had eliminated DEI requirements, closed DEI offices, removed diversity statements, or changed related policies.

SUNY Brockport, however, continues to operate an Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and is holding a conference themed “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Our Current Landscape.” The university says the conference examines how ‘EDI’ efforts are “evolving amid increased challenges and opposition.”

Panelist Şule Aksoy, an assistant professor of science education, focuses her scholarship on “designing justice-oriented science-learning experiences” and “science teacher identity development.” Her listed courses include “Diversity in Education” and “Sociocultural Diversity – Working with Families & Communities.”

Another panelist, Averill Kelley, is an assistant professor whose specialties include “Multicultural Education” and “Teachers of Color.” His listed courses include “Diversity in Education” and “Teaching Social Studies Inclusively High School.”

Brockport encourages faculty to incorporate the diversity conference into coursework, including by attending sessions with students, assigning conference participation, or incorporating conference presentations and reflection into course activities.

The university moved the conference from spring to fall in 2026, saying the change would “better distribute key programming,” “increase visibility for each initiative,” and encourage broader participation.
