Kratom Found at Scenes of Two Ole Miss Student Deaths
“authorities have not determined a cause of death for each individual”
Very sad news. It’s still early, but authorities believe it might be drug-related.
The Mississippi Free Press reports:
2 University of Mississippi Students Found Dead With Kratom at Each Scene, Causes of Death Unknown
Two University of Mississippi students were found dead on Sept. 21, but authorities have not determined a cause of death for each individual. The Lafayette County Metro Narcotics unit announced on the same day that no confirmed evidence linking the two deaths is currently available, but issued a warning regarding kratom, which was found at the scene of each death. Kratom is a popular plant often available as a synthetic derivative that has opioid-like effects.
At the same time, campus Greek organizations have issued warnings across campus regarding cychlorphine, a different synthetic opioid that can also cause dangerous overdoses, and does not show up on regular fentanyl testing strips used to examine narcotics for the presence of the powerful sedative. Currently, investigators have released no information linking cychlorphine to the deaths.
Police found one of the students on campus, and the other in the City of Oxford. Despite one call to the police suggesting one of the deaths may be related to some form of overdose, there is no evidence yet available suggesting that the kratom recovered from both scenes was the cause of the deaths.
Mississippi State Health Officer Dan Edney told the Mississippi Free Press in a Sept. 23 interview that, regardless of the causes, the risk of narcotic contamination is serious. “We’re trying to teach young people that any pill that you’re getting from any other source other than your pharmacist directly, you need to assume there’s something dangerous like fentanyl in it,” Edney said.

I’ve seen this stuff (Kratom) referenced in looks-maxing and health-maxing contexts. Just more proof that you should not take advice from tik tok.
We have a Kratom shop in the hood which never has customers, and is likely just a money laundering operation that emplys the drug dealers son to sit behind the counter and phone surf all day.
I remember the good old days when it was beer and weed – neither of which would kill you (although it could lead to stupid risky behavior). LSD and other stuff were also around, but again, nothing that would kill you outright.
Man, let me tell you something, this right here is fear mongering. Just because it happened to be there, does not mean it was a part of the cause of death. A LOT of people have taken this over a long period of years to get themselves off of opiate addictions, which is one of the reasons big pharma is so against it.
I have taken Kratom a bit back, after a shoulder surgery, and it was a rough one, and had to go through a serious physical therapy, where some of my chest muscles calcified and they had to go through some serious stretching exercises to get me my shoulder back, and that was more then a little painful. Of course, I got no pain meds for that, but I did take Kratum. This is not really a pain med, but it did ease the throbbing I had after the PT considerably, it didn’t make it go away, but it did make it bearable. When the PT was over with, I simply stopped taking the Kratum. That simple, and no withdrawal. All the stories about withdrawal, and people going to the emergency room, are pure BS stories people make up and lie about to try and give this a bad name.
There is a lot of fear mongering going on about this, and it is actually one of the safest things out there.
ANYTHING can be abused, and when that results in bad outcomes the sanctimonious always blame the vehicle instead of the driver. That gives them an excuse to regulate something “for your own good, of course!” That can be used to justify all sorts of tyranny, and removes the right to take individual responsibility for bad decisions and thereby grow some wisdom.
