Illinois Mother Charged With Hanging Toddler Was ‘Very Invested’ in Clancy Trial
According to court documents, Walsh reportedly told authorities “she believed her son was the ‘anti-Christ’ and the ‘devil.'”
Corie A. Walsh, 40, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder for allegedly hanging her two-year-old son, Barrett Walsh, from a basement rafter in her Frankfort, Illinois, home on September 1.
According to court documents, Walsh reportedly told authorities “she believed her son was the ‘anti-Christ’ and the ‘devil.'”
A Wednesday news release from the Frankfort Police Department read:
On September 1, 2026, at approximately 4:04 p.m., Frankfort Police Officers were dispatched to the 22700 Blk of Brook Stone Court for a report of an unresponsive juvenile.
Upon arrival, officers located a two-year-old juvenile at the residence. CPR was being administered and the juvenile was transported to a local hospital for additional treatment where they were later pronounced deceased.
Additionally, officers located the child’s mother at the home attempting self-harm. She was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicates this is a domestic related homicide.
Police documents obtained by NBC 5 Chicago stated: “When officers arrived, a neighbor was performing CPR on a toddler, later identified as two-year-old Barrett Walsh, born March 26, 2024.”
The neighbor told authorities she found Barrett, also known as “Bear,” hanging from a rafter in the basement. He had a ligature around his neck and his feet were off the ground, prosecutors said.
“She removed the ligature, lowered the child to the ground, and attempted CPR while calling 911. According to the neighbor, Barrett was cold and had no pulse,” the documents read.
The child was pronounced dead that same day and autopsy results found he died of “asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck,” the documents show, though police said a final cause and manner of death were still pending.
According to ABC News, “Walsh’s husband was out of town at the time of the incident. Authorities said an infant who was home at the time was not injured. Two additional school-age children arrived home around the time the child and Walsh were discovered.”
CBS Chicago reported that Walsh was transferred Friday afternoon to the Will County Adult Detention Facility, where she will remain pending her detention hearing. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The parallels between the Walsh and Lindsay Clancy cases are certainly striking. As per numerous media outlets, court documents show that Walsh had been following the Clancy murder trial very closely. According to ABC News, “prosecutors said witnesses told police that Walsh ‘had recently become very invested in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.'”
The X account @PoliceIncident reported that Walsh had discussed the Clancy case with friends in a group chat just hours before her son’s death. Fox 32 corroborated that account, adding that the Clancy jury was deliberating at the time of the chat.

In fact, the cases are so similar that, in a Friday evening statement, Walsh’s attorney Andrea Lyon appeared to be laying the groundwork for a Lindsay Clancy-style defense. She called it a “tragedy” that “Corey herself was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time this happened.”
Her statement read:
This is a tragedy, for the Walsh family all of whom are mourning the loss of this child. It is also a tragedy in that Corey herself was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time this happened. It is our hope that through a thorough presentation and investigation of the facts, that all of us will come to see this heartbreak for what it is.
I am not a lawyer and make no claim to understand the intricacies of Illinois law, but a defense based on mental illness may be a considerably heavier lift for Walsh than it was for Clancy.
In Massachusetts, prosecutors faced a higher burden than they would in most other states: They had to prove Clancy’s criminal responsibility beyond a reasonable doubt. To do so, they had to establish either that she did not suffer from a qualifying mental disease or defect or that, despite such an illness, she retained the substantial capacity both to understand that her conduct was wrong and to control her actions.
Regardless, there is no overstating the danger of the Clancy precedent. The apparent willingness of 11 Massachusetts jurors to acquit a woman who murdered her three children because she was allegedly in the throes of a psychotic episode at the time places the American justice system on a perilously slippery slope.
How many murderers can truly be said to have been in a clear and rational state of mind when they killed?
At any rate, after watching Massachusetts women gleefully celebrate the governor’s signing of a law permitting abortion up to the point of birth—and then learning that the Clancy trial had ended in a mistrial, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) asked an appropriate question: Is Massachusetts a safe place for children?

This story makes me ill. I can’t think of anything else to say.
The societal reckoning attributable to far more people than we would like seeking to excuse a Mother killing her children begins. I suspect we’re gonna have more copycats from among the horde of sympathizers (enablers) of the Massachusetts murderous Mother, far more than anyone could reasonably conceive. The misplaced empathy shown to these Woman, magnified by the internet/social media, their constant search for likes, the need for the dopamine hit of recognition/approval, the reflexive penchant some Women display to blindly support a member of the sisterhood and the rejection of personal accountability is going to become a bitter harvest.
I am both surprised and not surprised at the number of women who want to turn this into a feelings session of how hard child care is.
This is not about you! Stop trying to make everything your personal pity party. Most people that aren’t a-holes recognize that it is indeed very hard and commendable. This isn’t the time or place to claw for more sympathy and internalize monstrous psychosis.
She’s obviously not well but had a sound enough mind to plan it. Her and her ex husband are also separately suing for health care negligence (which is why he supports her story)…very sick grift!

There is no excuse for this behavior from any woman. Do we have a mental illness problem amongst the women in this country? Not just the ones committing the crime, but those who condone the crime. The actions of the women jurors in the Clancy trial was obviously biased against justice for the victims. How sick and low can some members of our society get?

1. Many. There are many murders where the killer knew exactly what he was doing.
2. That’s not the standard; the standard is that the doer’s mind is not so unclear and so irrational that they are incapable of understanding that they’re doing something wrong.
If this woman genuinely believed her two-year-old was literally the Devil, and isn’t just pretending to have believed that, then it’s unconscionable to convict her. Likewise with the MA woman; if she was genuinely having a psychotic episode and was truly incapable of understanding that she was doing wrong then she should be acquitted. The question is not one of principle but of fact; was she that disordered at the time, or was she not?
I find it equally unconscionable to pretend that anyone could know/believe that Clancy thought her two-year old was the Devil. No one lives in that woman’s head; only the facts, not feelings, matter in her trial: she murdered her three defenseless innocent children and carefully planned it (review the facts). Anything else is theatre — perhaps even the wheelchair as some have pointed out.
There are cultures around the world that believe Honor Killing of women is not wrong. If they emigrate here and commit an honor killing, is the judgement applied to what THEY believe is wrong or what WE believe is wrong?
WE believe killing little children (and uppity women kin folk) is horrific. Why should we care if if the brain malfunction that triggers it is cultural or physiological.

Walsh’s “anti-Christ” excuse for murdering her toddler sounds suspiciously like it was designed to get around the legal requirement that she knew she was doing an evil thing, a requirement that women watching the Clancy trial were being educated on.
“Hey, if I thought my toddler is the anti-christ, then I would think I was doing a good thing when I kill him, right? And how can they prove I don’t really think that?”

Deterrence is one of the three primary purposes of punishment, along with incapacitation and retribution.
The crazier that women are prone to get (and Clancy’s defense is that women get exotically and humongously super crazy), the stronger the deterrent factor has to be.
Clancy and Walsh could have abandoned their children, but chose to murder them instead. That warrants the strongest deterrence, which is death.
