NY Gov. Kathy Hochul: Don’t Deport ‘Essential’ Haitians, Salvadorans Who Staff Government
Temporary immigrants are “essential” to the operation of New York’s government, Governor Kathy Hochul said.
Hundreds of Haitians and Salvadorans who are set to be deported as their “temporary protected status” ends are needed to work in the New York state government and local entities, Governor Kathy Hochul said recently. The nursing home industry has similarly pleaded with Trump to protect its low-wage worker base.
The Democratic governor urged Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to stop the deportation of Haitians and Salvadorans.
She wrote on Monday:
The callousness of abruptly ending TPS for legally-present individuals including the recent termination for Haitians and the forthcoming termination for Salvadorans will force New York State and local governments to sever the employment of hundreds of essential employees as soon as next week, putting their livelihoods – and potentially their safety – at risk.
The governor decided insulting the president was a good strategy to win his favor. “By knowingly and cruelly forcing thousands of families to leave our country and return to their home countries, regardless of any ongoing or worsening humanitarian crises, the White House is committing a reckless and inhumane act,” she wrote.
El Salvador residents have been granted “temporary protected status” since 2001, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Haitians have been allowed to stay here since 2010 under the same protections.
Terminating Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of immigrants is reckless and inhumane.

However, the Supreme Court cleared the way for Trump to rescind protected status in its June 25 decision, Mullin v. Doe.
The nursing home industry is also pushing back, as it relies heavily on immigrant workers (to keep costs low).
“New York has the highest share of immigrant direct care workers of any state, with 40,000 Haitian TPS holders — 7,000 of whom work as nursing assistants and direct care givers,” Stephen Hanse, president and CEO of the New York State Health Facilities Association and the New York State Center for Assisted Living, wrote on August 14.

Someone put this lich back in her tomb so NY can get a real governor
Forget it Rick, it’s New York.
I propose an alternative arrangement:
For every “essential” illegal Haitian and Salvadoran deported from a government position, deport an additional white Democrat from the same office.
How about only have citizens working in government? That’s not hard. Don’t you pay a living wage, as you always brag about?
No doubt, one of these illegals working for the state our members of the SEIU.
Unbelievable. The Democrat will do anything to keep their illegals.
Why do Americans not have these jobs.
Haven’t these immigrants had many years to change their status?
Yes but …the main pathways for TPS grantee to permanent lawful status would be military service and marriage to a Citizen. There’s not a direct path from TPS to green card and/or Citizenship that I’m aware of which wouldn’t require them to exit the USA.
I doubt NY state government has many essential workers and that includes the governor. I double doubt any of them are illegal.
Instead how about temporary really does mean temporary and the fools who arrogantly presumed it meant permanent gotta deal with consequences of their own making? Y’all deliberately chose to hire people who could have their TEMPORARY permission to remain in the USA terminated, if you built your system around cheaper, temporary labor instead of offering true market rate wages/benefits to Citizens and green card holders that’s on you. No whining b/c the long delayed reckoning has arrived.
What? Temporary does not mean forever? What the heck is wrong with you!
