The dual loyalty charge is one of, if not the oldest, antisemitic tropes, used against the Jewish community and, as the ADL notes, it “has been used to harass, marginalize, and persecute the Jewish people for centuries.”
“The most prominent examples of the disloyalty charge in the U.S.,” they also wrote, “have alleged that Jews conspired to involve America in foreign wars against the nation’s true interest.”
Because the United States has stood with Israel throughout the Israel-Hamas war, which was instigated by Hamas terrorists murdering over 1,000 innocent Israelis on October 7, 2023, and taking 251 people hostage, the escalation in antisemitism in the form of hate crime attacks and accusations of dual loyalty against Jewish Americans (including some members of Congress) became even more pronounced.
It was made all the more “acceptable” in certain circles to do so thanks in part to the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), whose members include Zohran Mamdani, the anti-Israel, antisemitic mayor of New York City, which is home to millions of Jews. Some DSA House candidates in New York whom Mamdani endorsed and who share his views on Israel won their primary races and will likely go on to serve in Congress.
Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan is among the left-wing media types who support Mamdani and who also share his views about Jews and Israel. Accordingly, Hasan, founder of the Zeteo media company, has also spent time promoting the candidacy of Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
On the topic of Jews and Israel, the mindset of El-Sayed, of course, falls right in line with Mamdani’s and the DSAs. But Michigan is not New York, and as such, Michigan Democrats, including those in the Jewish community, are deeply divided over his candidacy, with El-Sayed only narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens (MI-11) by 5,000 votes of the over 1.5 million cast.
El-Sayed’s primary victory prompted an outreach effort that was already in motion well before the votes were tallied, with Jewish and other disaffected Democrats vowing to support GOP nominee Mike Rogers and fundraise on his behalf to try to prevent El-Sayed from winning in November.
This has enraged Hasan, who is now floating a loyalty test not just for Jewish Democrats who don’t support El-Sayed but also for those “who don’t support what Israel is doing” who, in his view, should be putting pressure on anti-El-Sayed Jews, insinuating that both are engaging in “anti-Muslim bigotry”:
So it’s choose suicidal empathy and Democratic Party loyalty, or risk being viewed as an anti-Muslim bigot, in Hasan’s view.
That… did not land well:
From another X user:
Mehdi Hasan sees Jews refusing to support his preferred Muslim candidate and immediately screams “anti-Muslim bigotry.”What a cheap little con.Abdul El-Sayed won’t even affirm Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and has questioned whether a Jewish state is compatible with liberal values. Michigan Jews are allowed to look at that record and say: no thanks. They don’t owe Mehdi their votes. And smearing Jews as bigots because they won’t fall in line for El-Sayed is filthy identity-politics bullshit.

In the leftist punditocracy battle over who could be more hate-filled and anti-America/Israel, Mehdi Hasan is getting almost as bad as Hasan Piker, and that is not an exaggeration.
