A Socialist Wins a Senate Primary in … Oklahoma?
“Most countries that have socialism, they are thriving.”
DSA-endorsed candidate N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas won Oklahoma’s Democratic Senate primary runoff Tuesday night. Yes, a socialist is now the party’s nominee in a deep-red state where President Donald Trump beat former Vice President Kamala Harris by nearly 35 points in 2024.
As one X user rightly notes, the Hasan Piker/Zohran Mamdani wing is no longer a fringe element of the Democratic Party, “they’re taking control of it.”
Democrats in *Oklahoma* are now nominating literal socialists for Senate

Thomas, 31, a nurse and member of the Chickasaw Nation, defeated 70-year-old attorney and minister Jim Priest despite being vastly outspent, according to NBC News.
The good news is that Thomas will almost certainly lose to her Republican opponent, Rep. Kevin Hern, in November. The two are competing for the seat vacated in March by former Sen. Markwayne Mullin following his confirmation as secretary of Homeland Security.
The last time the state elected a Democrat to the Senate was 1990. Former Oklahoma governor Sen. David Boren served from 1979 to 1994. [He did not complete his final term; He resigned his seat in November 1994 to become president of the University of Oklahoma.]
While Hern is heavily favored to win the race given the Sooner State’s overwhelmingly conservative electorate, Thomas is likely to face an enormous financial disadvantage in the general election as well. NBC reported that, as of Aug. 5, Thomas’ campaign had just $456 cash on hand, compared with $2.6 million for Hern’s campaign as of June 30.

During a Tuesday morning interview, Thomas told NBC that although she has not joined the DSA, she is “a self-proclaimed democratic socialist.” As she sees it, the DSA represents “the next generation” that is “looking to change the system.”
“The system right now doesn’t work for us and it never has,” she said. “I’m just ready for change and I think everyone else is as well.”
She does not support the entire DSA platform. While she backs Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, universal childcare, parental leave, and “making sure that everyone pays their fair share,” as a military spouse, she opposes the party’s call to defund the Department of War.
While she believes that “capitalism is what’s destroying our country right now,” she later said “described capitalism as ‘inevitable,’ saying she supports the concept of people owning their own businesses and property.”
Thomas’s win comes on the heels of a string of victories by DSA-endorsed candidates throughout the country this primary cycle. Most recently, Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon scored a stunning upset over her establishment-backed Democratic opponent, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman.
Although Thomas has no plausible path to victory in the general election, her primary victory is nonetheless disturbing. It’s another sign of just how normalized socialism has become within the Democratic Party. Ideas — and candidates — that would have been scoffed at by most Democrats even five years ago have increasingly been embraced by the party’s mainstream.
Younger voters, largely unaware of the death and misery socialism has left in its wake wherever it has been tried, have become some of its most enthusiastic proponents.
In a July interview with local media outlet NonDoc, Thomas said, “They’re wanting a different vision, and I have a different vision as a progressive myself. Most countries that have socialism, they are thriving.” [Emphasis added.]
Thomas will not become Oklahoma’s next senator. But that’s not really the story. The story is that a self-described socialist just became the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in one of the reddest states in America. If socialism can become politically unremarkable inside the Democratic Party in Oklahoma, perhaps the better question is no longer whether the party’s socialist wing is gaining ground — but how much ground it has already gained.

It’s spreading. Democrats are now a Party of totalitarian Islamic fascists, anti-Semitic Marxists, pedophile protectors, and Antifa thugs. All dedicated to destroy liberty and to violently assault dissenters.
…and these wins smell fishier that Fulton’s Fish Market in July.
Two words: buy ammo
More ammo and more skill drills!
“A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition”
― Rudyard Kipling
The old guard Democrats raised, nurtured, & fed these leftists to what they are today. They can now reap what they have sown.
Frankenstein’s monster is getting out of control.
The revolution always eats its own.
The rest of us have to reap it too.
Think about it, when have they not been all of those things?
saying she supports the concept of people owning their own businesses and property.
Sure. When the democrats/DSA aren’t playing Saul Alinsky, they’re playing Trojan horse.
You forgot “ignorant fools”.
I suspect that there are large contingents of voters who don’t understand, or else don’t actually pay all that much attention to policies and issues beyond the briefest superficial that sounds good, or else don’t think that what a candidate says is all that relevant once they get into office, as long as they’re the correct party. I further suspect that given that, the voting often will be about something else, such as a group identity, apparent personality, or who is just more physically attractive.
All these nutty women are little more than Eve’s Revenge.
A hard lesson in life is that people have to make their own mistakes to learn from them, and they get angry if you try to stop them. Socialist hellhole here we come.
I would like to suggest that the crazies have taken control not because of THEIR popularity, but because of the lack of involvement in the Party by the traditional Democratic voters. I think many of them left the tent after the Biden/Harris fiasco. Now, some will vote for anyone who isn’t Trump no the smell, but many (hopefully) will simply stay home for the fall elections as they have done for the primaries.
In short: when everyone else has left the ship the rats get to try steering it.
Cheers and singing after a socialist wins in Oklahoma.
Sounds like it would make a good musical.
“A hard lesson in life is that people have to make their own mistakes to learn from them”
It’s also a fact that very people learn from their mistakes.
Are not democrats insane?
And is not the definition “insanity” doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?
But, but, but….it wasn’t the right people that tried it last time. This time we now have the right people!
Wash, rinse, repeat.
No need to wash. Just rinse and repeat.
Up to this sudden rise of the DSA, the results of bad democrat policies has been somewhat tempered by opposition from republicans, plus they have a fawning media that shares their ideas and blames everything else for the results. This new movement is different. You notice at least a few democrats are already beginning to rue the day…
And thank you for the challenge. I vastly enjoy your postings here and upvote you bigly, You have prompted me to try to think deeper and I appreciate it.
Who cares? Democrats have been useless for decades and they are finally paying a political price for it.
One can hope.
Oklahoma! Where the commies come rolling down the plains.”
Who knows if Thomas will “certainly not win the general.”?
It’s enough that she supports Medicare for all and defunding the Pentagon to make her a dangerous threat, not to mention the DSA lunacy she claims not to support, but most likely does..
Oklahoma , like Texas, is not the.red wall you all think it is
This is true. They are both far enough into the red, though, where we can actively fight to keep them there. But we have to fight. We have to get everyone aligned with principal conservative values and encourage them to consistently vote that way.
Although true, it’s been true with traditional Red v Blue contests. Where DSA types are the Dem nominees, these particular contests will be Red v Ultraviolet, and may likely have quite different outcomes in Purple areas. Rs will come out to defeat commies, some Dems will not vote for them, and some Dems will vote for Rs just to send the message to their own party. Defeat enough commies in these races and it will encourage the Dems to swerve back to moderation in order to remain competitive (at least in some districts).
Unique dynamics are afoot and there are many possible outcomes, with several possible long-term effects.
If there is a DSA candidate in a primary, the total votes must be divided equally among them. This way nobody wins.
One can dream…
Oklahoma, where the wind whistles through your under shortttts 🎶🎶🎶🎶
Only if they’re fringed and sitting on top of your surrey.
“Oklahoma, where the wind goes whistlin’ through your shorts…
and blows in socialists of various and sundry sorts.”
The system right now doesn’t work for us and it never has
Ironically, all the parts that don’t work well for you are the parts your ilk (progressives, welfare-staters, socialists, etc.) have changed in the last 40-100 years. Primarily by involving government where it was not, before, in America.
I told people when aoc won her first election that she was dangerous. Not for her ideas but her dedication to the message. No matter how much stupid she spewed out, the laughs and criticisms never got her off message. Most folks were mesmerized by her big ol’ communist tippies as Sowell is quoted in memes as saying (never bothered looking it up to see if true).
IMHO dsa took over the dem party because they were too focused on hating Trump and stealing as much money as they could.
The dearth of ukraine talking points comes to mind when you consider usaid money was taken out and all of a sudden we’re not hearing much about the midget president as we used to hear.
No reason to go if you aren’t going to get your “fair” share of grifted money.
The Ds have held to the heart of socialism for over a hundred years. It’s just that they’ve finally quit being coy about it, and regular people are starting to realize it.
The message that gets the DSA so many votes is a lie but like NYC, it pulls in AWFLs and young people. Medicare for all is the bigest lie but changing the government is also a lie. The economy for young people is brutal and any change for them is welcomed. The bad news for normal people is that all of these fringe groups are joining hands even though they have almost nothing in common, and that is a formidable foe! A drowning person will grasp for anything and that’s where the DSA is now.
Good points. The GoP and its more free market oriented advocates have gotta stop thinking that labeling the DSA as ‘commies’ is sufficient. There are very real economic problems and folks are gravitating towards the people who at least acknowledge the issues and who don’t patronize them with ‘bootstraps’ homilies that no longer apply to the current economic realities.
Health care/IN is a big problem. Obamacare accelerated the pre-existing bifurcation into have/have not. If you don’t have employer provided/subsidized plan you’re behind the 8 ball.
IMO we should be acknowledging and acting on it. Get universal HSA passed along with IN across State lines and IN pricing to match the.risk of the insured removing the free riding. Simultaneously force transparency in health care delivery pricing so consumers can shop by price. Then take the $ used for Obama care and Medicaid and redeploy it into the universal HSA accounts for every US Citizen. Use 70% for that then 20% going to HSA of the folks with super expensive/chronic issues. Use remaining 10% to support rural hospitals so that everyone has a basic hospital within an hour to get X rays, ultrasound, CT scans and general surgery.
This would deliver better, more consistent care, lower IN prices, increase # of insured and all done by taking the $ away from IN companies and putting the $ into the hands of individual US Citizen consumers to buy the IN they believe fits their needs. Set the minimum of a catastrophic care plan with a $5K deductible and an annual physical/RX.screen/adjustment and a dental check up/cleaning.
“If you don’t have employer provided/subsidized plan you’re behind the 8 ball.”
You said it! There are millions of people in that position, and they vote. And the Republicans are not paying attention.
Rand Paul had the idea of allowing companies like Costco to offer health insurance to their members as well as their employees. This would help fix the problem and rob the Democrats of an issue. Republican politicians seem too stupid to see the light.
So Ms. Thomas supports keeping the Department of War and letting people keep a little property?
She’s a Menshevik. And she should study what happened to them…
There is a certain satisfaction to watching Frankenstein become a victim to his own monster. Personally I’m rooting for the monster
“Most countries that have socialism, they are thriving.”
The Democrats turned themselves into the party that officially encouraged, supported, and enforced delusions.
Well, this is where that leads.
Ya sowed the wind, Chuckie. Enjoy your “flight.”
Almost no countries have socialism. They have social programs yes but not socialism, The only countries that have socialism that I can think of are Cuba and Venezuela,. Both are basket cases.
Even China Russia and Vietnam have mixed in capitalism even if it of a pernicious type in an least Russia.
“Like I said, I’m kind, not nice. So I will make sure that I work as diligently as I can to make sure that within my first 100 days that we impeach, remove and convict. They will have to pry that pen out of my cold, dead hands before I go any further with allowing this administration to continue doing what they’re doing.”
John Wick would like a word…
“Kind” here is a euphemism for unhinged. She’s hanging by just one, the “nice” one. LOL
Democrats are insane, no matter the state.
“Thriving.” She keeps using that word; ….
She’s very wise to advocate for full funding to the military. She fully understands the need for a strong military… just look at the majority of socialist countries.
She has been well-schooled in theatrics, just like AOC. I wonder who is funding her.
Look, Americans have to ask the question, “HOW, is this happening?” It boils down to immigration. Put illegal immigration to the side for a second. Look at LEGAL immigration into America since 1980. Immigration from Somalia, Middle East, countries from Asia & Latin America, and these people do not know how to integrate, they do not know how to acculturate & assimilate. Many do not speak the English.
This brings us to the DSA (the Democratic Socialists of America), 1/3 of them come from immigrant families, I make this note because as many of us know, many immigrant families have taught their kids to hate our great nation. And the remaining come from ultra-wealthy families where their parents are multi, multi, multi-millionaires.
To save our great nation, we NEED IMMIGRATION REFORM.
In a deep red state, the Dems might as well swing for the fences. They have nothing to lose. This is just like Florida.
