U. New Mexico Policy Requires Faculty to Use Preferred Pronouns, Gender Identities

UNM policy mandates faculty to use preferred pronouns, gender identities

The University of New Mexico (UNM) maintains a policy requiring faculty, staff, and students to use all forms of individuals’ preferred pronouns and so-called gender identities, stating that an unwillingness to do so can constitute harassment or discrimination.

The UNM Administrative Policy 2740 Regarding Gender and Identity demands faculty cater to students who identify as transgender in an effort to promote an environment of “’inclusivity.” The policy commands that staff “are expected to make reasonable efforts to address individuals by a pronoun corresponding to their gender identity upon request.”

“Individuals may not be subjected to unwelcome questions or invasive requests for documentation related to their gender identity,” it continues.

In regards to resident life on campus, the policy details that students can “pick a room that aligns with their gender identity, without the need for documentation.”

The Arcoiris Center, formerly called the LGBTQ Resource Center, actively promotes this policy, working to provide university members with services that promote ideas of inclusivity and diversity.

Some resources include educational programming, safer sex resources, and safe zone workshops.

The Center encourages people to “join the countless students, staff, and faculty at UNM who have made a commitment to trans and gender non-conforming people by adding your pronouns to you email signature line, zoom name, and when introducing yourself in meetings.” It also asserts that it is an “act of aggression” to assume someone’s gender identity.

At the bottom of the “Personal Pronouns” page, the Arcoiris Center links to the Trans Student Educational Resource (TSER), which teaches about the guidelines on how to refer to others regarding their pronouns. It states that “There are no male/female or man/woman pronouns. All pronouns can be used for any gender and are gender neutral”.
