New York City Mayor Mamdani Continues His War on Landlords
Mamdani might achieve his collectivism goal sooner than expected.

Socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani continues his war on landlords with his “Rental Ripoff Report.”

This is the game Mamdani is playing.
He “freezes” rent, which means some landlords can’t afford to do repairs or keep renters, and then people get evicted.

Mamdani’s plan is to have DCWP [Department of Consumer and Worker Protection] work with the City Council on new legislation that would stipulate landlords could require either a credit check — paid for by the landlord or broker — or proof that an applicant’s income meets the common 40-times-the-rent standard, but not both.
The report argued the shift would cut down on redundant paperwork and out-of-pocket costs for renters.
The 68-page report laid out an ambitious slate of tenant-focused proposals, including legally recognizing tenant unions, directing HPD to investigate every heat complaint citywide and requiring landlords to disclose any AI-generated or digitally altered images and videos in rental listings so applicants are not misled by doctored apartments.
The report’s ideas came from “Rental Ripoff Hearings” where 2,300 of tenants across the five boroughs detailed housing conditions, fees and landlord practices they wanted City Hall to change.
“From requiring disclosure of AI-altered listings to bringing our code enforcement systems into the 21st century and finally recognizing tenant unions, we are making it clear that every New Yorker deserves a safe home – and every landlord who refuses to provide one will be held accountable,” boasted Mamdani.
Here’s the thing. The majority of the problems occur in rent-stabilized buildings.
Gee, I wonder why that happens! Mamdani froze more rent, which means these problems will skyrocket.
“New Yorkers are paying record-high rents because there is not enough housing, and many of the reported conditions are concentrated in heavily rent-stabilized buildings that are facing significant operational and financial challenges,” said James Whelan, the president of the Real Estate Board of New York. “Rather than addressing these issues directly, the administration continues to paint property owners with a broad brush, unfairly characterizing an entire industry. Seven months into this administration, it is time to prioritize policies that will truly make New York more affordable by increasing housing supply and preserving existing housing.”
Supply and demand. That’s how the system works.
Mamdani even brought in Toni Marrero of the Hope Tenants Union. She claimed that eviction is violence.

The Mamdani administration is emboldening us so that we no longer tolerate the violence of evictions as a matter of business as usual. When are you moving? Down in S FL they have the Jewish welcome wagon. I think they go through the homeowner rolls and pick out the Jewish names and drop by. Democrat voters in NYC expect the government to “supply all their demands”.
The voters can enjoy having Mamdopey’s chronies at “insert newly minted NGO here” get rich while their “rent controlled” apartment continues to be in disrepair but now with even more bureacuracy and even less acountability. Aaah the warmth of collectivism where we all get poorer except the elites few controlling the government.
Evictions are not violence. Resisting eviction — i.e. willfully remaining on someone’s property after he has told you to leave — is trespassing, which by definition is a crime of violence, just like stealing.
Of course he isn’t. Why should he be? Do the public own the buildings?! No, they don’t. So why should he be their steward? They’re rightfully his buildings, and his only duty is to himself.
You have hit the nail on the head. Or “spot on” to use a more modern phrase. No businessman/woman is supposed to be a steward of the public trust, nor can they be.
Commies think everything that doesn’t personally belong to them is the state’s to control. Apartments, stores, corporations, vehicles. healthcare, schools, their children, their bank accounts, wait, what?
As long as they’re the state or they are likely to get something from the state. Having “argued” (what they write barely qualifies) with numerous communists there’s nothing more to most of them than “I want free shit.” These are people who genuinely think the universe owes them existence. Food, shelter, health care, money. They demand them the same way a child demands an allowance.
AirBnB and VRBO should kick the wretched Mamdani clan’s lakefront, Ugandan mansion off of their respective platforms.
Further, someone should ask the silver spoon-fed, Islamofascist/Muslim supremacist hypocrite, Mamdummy, why his parents think it’s okay for them to collect rent from rental tenants in Uganda, but it’s not okay for New York City landlords to do the same.
An eviction for non payment of rent is a very difficult and long process in New York City’s landlord – tenant court. Tenants can offer, with court approval, stipulation of settlements, one after another, and violate each one.
The Legal Aid attorneys will surely help Mayor Mamdani’s effort to wrest ownership away from private individuals as most of them hate the owners. This will leave NYC with even less affordable units to rent with the units available in a poor condition. In addition, New York City Public Housing will not be improved.
Who wins? There are rich developers in the NYC area ready to pounce. Mamdani has no clue.
If landlords can’t charge rent to cover their costs, can’t afford to pay for maintenance without making a loss, can’t keep their buildings without paying for maintenance they can’t afford, and can’t sell buildings that are complete lossmakers under Mamdani, then aren’t insurance claims their only option?
If their buildings ‘accidentally’ burn down, then they can get much of their investment back, sell the land for whatever it’s worth, and Escape from New York! Shame about the collateral damage of course, but what other options will landlords have? Desperate people do desperate things.
Cry me a river, New York and don’t bother saying you’re sorry.
Why do you all want to live in that dump? They will ultimately have to declare bankruptcy, and you can all thank Cuomo and his raging ego for screwing up both the city and the state.
