NY Italian Community Furious After Mamdani Omits Little Italy on NYC Immigrant Neighborhood Map

The Italian American Civil Rights League (IACRL) blasted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for omitting Little Italy from his map of immigrant neighborhoods.
Zohran Mamdani wants to ERASE Italian Americans.
First, he denied our permit for Unity Day 2026.
Now, he is excluding Little Italy as a recognized location all together on the map.

“This is not a clerical error. This is cultural erasure,” seethed Mike Crispi, President of the Italian American Civil Rights League. “Little Italy is sacred ground. It is where Italian immigrants came with nothing, worked like hell, opened shops, raised families, built churches, fed the city, and helped make New York what it is.”

Everything Tony Soprano says in this clip is 100% true. The Americans used Italians for cheap labor. They basically built all the tunnels in NYC and much of the infrastructure.
In 1890, 90% of the laborers in the New York City Department of Public Works were Italian immigrants.
Look at the map. Notice anything missing? Western countries. Mamdani listed Poland, but don’t forget it’s in Eastern Europe.
Mamdani and his cronies absolutely despise Western culture. Where are the Irish? Where are the Jews? You cannot have an NYC immigrant neighborhood map with the Jewish, the Italians, and the Irish. And yet, Mamdani left off the Big Three.
“Mamdani’s City Hall can find room for every fashionable progressive constituency, but somehow it cannot find Little Italy,” added Crispi. “Our culture is good enough for photo ops, our food is good enough for their fundraisers, and our neighborhoods are good enough for tourism dollars – but when it comes time to recognize Italian Americans, they erase us.”
Believe it or not, I am Italian. My maternal great-grandparents came to America from Calabria, located in southern Italy, in the 1920s. I got all the recessive outward traits (red hair, blue eyes, fair skin due to Scottish and German genes from my biological father and maternal grandmother), but my mom passed to me all the Italian personality and mannerisms. My brother got all the dominant Italian genes (black hair, black eyes, olive skin).
One thing I learned from the family: Don’t. Tick. Off. Italians.

My great-grandparents and other Italians fled literal fascism. They came to America, assimilated, and prospered despite facing actual racism and obstacles. They didn’t complain. They fought back and proved their worth.
My mom told me my great-grandmother never spoke English, but my grandfather did. Again, these Italians assimilated, didn’t demand that everyone participate in their culture, and, most importantly, they never tried to change America.
The largest lynching in American history? March 14, 1891, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The police rounded up 11 men for allegedly murdering a police chief. They were arrested because they were Italian. A jury acquitted six, and the trials for the other three ended in mistrials.
A mob went into the Orleans Parish prison and slaughtered the 11 Italian American immigrants.

The real issue is that we are working against the “melting pot”, and for the “tossed salad”.
Melting pot was always a lie, this country was built by white Europeans and it should have stayed that way.

The immigrant Italians had it rough in the late 1800’s early 1900’s in US. They hung in there. The YUGE difference is that they hung there within the confines of the Constitution rather than planning to destroy it. Look at WWII… yes there were Italian criminal elements … big time… but… they were still (cross fingers) “patriots” versus the Germans. The only real threats are Little Mogadishu , Little IRGC Tehran , and Little Bokshevikia.

Then we were in the midst of a multi decade ‘pause’ of widespread immigration after a long period of open borders. Today …we can’t seem to get agreement to send criminal illegal aliens home much less launch large scale interior enforcement as Eisenhower did.
Food, music, language to an extent was/is part of melting pot. There’s plenty of melting pot examples in the Southeast alone much less other areas. The missing piece is willingness and requirement to assimilate into the existing social/civic social order. To discard any imported cultural norms that are in conflict with the norms of the USA.
In some cases today we have ‘immigrants’ (invaders) who profess to hold a higher allegiance to their prior Nation. IMO that’s the distinction between the mindset of an immigrant v an invader. An immigrant is seeking to cast off the prior allegiance to join something they perceive as better, while an invader rejects the reciprocal duties of allegiance to the new Nation and instead retains the prior allegiance, seeking to alter the Nation they now occupy.

Also, American Jews have made huge contributions to this country, since the Revolutionary War, but your comment excludes them.

When I was in elementary school, I read a series about a Jewish immigrant/first generation family in New York called “The All-of-a-Kind Family” by Sydney Taylor. I learned so much about Jewish traditions and heritage as well as life in the early 20th century.
I truly hope New York has learned its lesson about Socialists and the danger they present.

The thing with Little Italy, though, is that if the map is supposed to show where ethnic communities live today, then Little Italy doesn’t belong on it, because the Italians moved out long ago.

The days when Jews were concentrated in the Lower East Side are long gone. There are still some old families left there, and some new ones have moved in in recent decades, but as a continuous large community it’s history.
The thing about the LES is that until the 1930s it was always the poor people’s neighborhood, where immigrants first settled because they couldn’t afford anything better. They went to work and built themselves up, and as soon as they could afford to move somewhere else they moved, and were replaced by new immigrants who repeated the churn. Rent control put a big brake on that, because people who by all rights ought to be moving out and making the housing available for those poorer than them suddenly found that moving out of their rent controlled apartments would cost them so much more than it should, so they stayed even though the accommodations were inadequate and inappropriate for their economic status. And that meant the poor were SOL.

Significantly leaves out the sizeable Syrian Jewish population in Brooklyn who have been there ofr over 100 years, but bizarely includes “little palestine,” a very tiny group of Arab Muslims who don’t all even identify as palestinian. So once again made up history by the bigot Mamdopey meant to erase the real history of NYC.
Another aspect of this I hadn’t considered until now is that this ‘map’ of neighborhoods highlights the new waves of immigrants while simultaneously ignoring/erasing the prior waves of immigrants; Jews, Italians, Irish. It’s almost an unforced admission that the great replacement theory holds merit.
Take a good list at the neighborhoods included, and you find “Little Poland” is in there. Weird that one still exists, while Little Italy and a few others disappeared. I think “Little Ukraine” is the only other European cultural center on the map.
