California Anti-Israel Protester Sentenced to One Year in Jail for Death of Jewish Counter-Protester
“The prosecutor’s office said it argued for a sentence in state prison and objected to the sentence of one year in county jail and two years of probation that was imposed Tuesday.”
We have been following this story, and if you have read our coverage, you already knew that a disgracefully short sentence was expected in this case.
The victim here was Paul Kessler, an older Jewish man who was counter-protesting an anti-Israel protest following the October 7th attacks. The assailant, Loay Alnaji, struck Kessler with a bullhorn, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement.

For this, Alnaji has just been sentenced to a year in prison.

Man sentenced to 1 year in jail in death of Jewish man during dueling protests
A protester who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of an elderly Jewish man during a 2023 demonstration in California over the war in Gaza was sentenced this week to one year in county jail, prosecutors said.
Paul Kessler, 69, fell and hit his head during a confrontation with the protester, Loay Alnaji, 53, on a street corner in Thousand Oaks near Los Angeles on Nov. 5, 2023. Kessler died the next day.
Alnaji was part of a pro-Palestinian group protesting over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and Kessler was demonstrating in support of Israel, authorities have said.
Alnaji called 911 and stayed at the scene after the fall, officials said.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said Alnaji “escalated a verbal altercation to a physical confrontation” with Kessler and that Alnaji struck Kessler in the head with a megaphone.
The prosecutor’s office said it argued for a sentence in state prison and objected to the sentence of one year in county jail and two years of probation that was imposed Tuesday.
Alnaji pleaded guilty on May 5 to involuntary manslaughter and battery causing serious bodily injury, both felonies, as well as a special allegation of causing great bodily injury, the district attorney’s office said.
“Mr. Kessler lost his life in a violent attack that took him from his family and his wife of 43 years,” Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said in a statement. “Given the circumstances of this case and the death that resulted, we believe a state prison commitment was the appropriate and just sentence.”

I can guarantee you that if the tables were turned, you and I would be held without bail on a charge of murder in the first degree. The DA would be in front of microphones daily drumming up two-minutes hate about us and calling for the death penalty. Plea bargain? Ha! He’ll see us in court!
There was no deal with the DA. On the contrary, the DA objected to this short sentence. At the time that the guy changed his plea to guilty his lawyer seemed to say they’d made a deal with the judge! Which makes no sense at all. I don’t understand why there has been no investigation of that, because of course the judge has no business communicating ex parte with the defense, let alone making deals!

No, it makes no sense. Judges don’t make deals. They can’t. If this judge did, then that would be a major scandal, so the apparent claim by his lawyer needs to be investigated. I don’t understand why it isn’t.

A year for manslaughter under the very bad facts of this case is egregiously awful. First it was a physical attack, second at a protest/counter protest where free speech is supposed to flourish, third the victim was elderly. We can stop there and ignore other elements to show how bad this sentence is.. CA, like many States, has sentencing enhancement provisions for violence against elderly. At minimum this attacker should be maxed out on the sentencing range due to enhancements/aggravating factors.
Jewish lives matter, but not to the evil, goose-stepping, subversive, Jew-hating, Christian-hating, Hindu=hating, nazi/communist/Islamofascist/Muslim supremacist Dhimmi-crat fifth columnist pukes.

Yes but the real answer IMO is more general; the victim wasn’t a member of the culturally acceptable protected classes. White Females found that out during BLM. Many Jews are figuring this out in the current climate of violence directed at them for no other reason than loss of that status. The commonality of the the groups is that to some degree or other both groups used to enjoy a privileged, culturally acceptable protected status. Both Jews and White Females are now in the same boat with plain vanilla white Males, cast as the villain of society and fair game for abuse/derision by the groups who remain their socially/culturally privileged status.

According to one account the judge called it “two old guys in a fight”. Except one of the “old guys” was almost the exact same age as the judge and the victim was almost 20 years older.
The film “Citizen Vigilante” shows a scene where a judge is murdered as revenge for giving a light sentence. If many situations occur like this, some might want to do the same. The lines of justice are blurry.

As a native of SoCal and retired from law enforcement, I am angry and ashamed at this miscarriage of justice. You hit a man over the head with a megaphone, knocking him down, where he suffers fatal injuries, and get off with one year in jail?
What is it at play here? Is it the growing devaluation of Jewish life? Is it another surrender to militant Islamists posing as “defenders of Palestinian human rights”? These are people supporting the savages of Hamas. Is it just another example of the marriage between the Islamist Jew-haters and the far left who have infiltrated the California judiciary? Is it just cowardice on the part of our establishment leaders who figure that militant Muslims far outnumber Jewish citizens, a calculation they have seemingly made in Europe?
