The 2026 World Cup has produced plenty of memorable moments on the field. But some of the most entertaining stories have come from what happens after fans leave the stadium.
As thousands of visitors from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America travel across the United States between matches, many have been documenting their experiences online. What has emerged is an unexpected theme: many foreign visitors seem to be having the time of their lives.
One viral video that has circulated widely asks a simple question:
The creator talks about her experiences in America and pushes back on many of the assumptions she once had about the country.
Another viral clip has generated millions of views with a caption joking that “the European mind is starting to comprehend” America as a visitor beams behind the wheel of a RAM pickup truck.
For Americans, it may seem ordinary. For many visitors, it appears to be part of an experience that is very different from what they expected before arriving.
Then there’s the food.
Hundreds of videos have captured European visitors reacting to the massive American food, free refills, and the quality of the food. All seemed stunned that a food could be that large, and some, like a refilled drink, could be free.
Some were even shocked and seemed amazed at a simple American Saturday morning.
Americans are even getting in on the spirit, with one of the funniest viral moments involving an American fan getting members of England’s national team to sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence.
The videos are lighthearted, but together they tell a larger story. Many visitors appear genuinely surprised by how welcoming Americans have been and how much they have enjoyed traveling around the country.
No World Cup visitor has captured that phenomenon quite like Freddy.
The German fan known online as “World Cup Freddy” has become something of a celebrity during the tournament after chronicling a cross-country American road trip that has attracted hundreds of thousands of followers. Along the way, his posts have become a running showcase of the kind of hospitality many foreign visitors say they’ve encountered in the United States.
One of Freddy’s first viral moments came during a visit with the Houston Police Department, where officers treated the group to Texas barbecue.
Freddy later described it as the most American experience of the trip. At the same stop, he and his friends attended their first Major League Baseball game, watching the Houston Astros take on the Detroit Tigers.
The adventure only escalated from there.
Freddy made documented stops at iconic American destinations that many Americans barely think twice about.
While in Houston, Freddy and his friends received a private tour of NASA’s Johnson Space Center from astronaut Anne McClain. The group toured facilities, explored the Orion capsule trainer, and even spoke with astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
After repeatedly posting about listening to country singer Ella Langley while driving around America, Freddy received an invitation to one of her concerts and later got to meet her backstage.
The story became so popular that even travel problems turned into viral moments.
When severe weather canceled Freddy’s flight and threatened to keep him from reaching a World Cup match in Canada, social media users flooded him with offers of assistance. American Airlines eventually helped arrange alternate travel, while former NFL star J.J. Watt worked behind the scenes to help get the group where they needed to go.
Freddy isn’t the only visitor attracting attention.
Another traveler known online as Bob Travel, from Japan, has also built a following by documenting his American experiences, particularly his reactions to Texas culture, food, and the people he has encountered along the way.
The common thread through nearly all of these videos is that they are not really about politics.
They are about experiences.
Visitors are discovering barbecue joints, Waffle House at two in the morning, Buc-ee’s, baseball games, country music concerts, pickup trucks, road trips, and complete strangers willing to help them when something goes wrong.
For years, Americans have been told that much of the world views the United States as a country in decline. Yet many of the World Cup visitors documenting their travels seem to be leaving with a very different impression.
One British creator who splits time between Europe and the United States recently reflected on the trend, saying World Cup fans continue to be amazed by the United States and have a truly unique experience that you can only have in America.
That may be the biggest surprise of the World Cup so far.
Not the results on the field.
The realization by many visitors that America was not what they expected.
And judging by the millions of views these videos continue to generate, Americans have enjoyed watching that discovery happen in real time.
