William A. Jacobson is a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Securities Law Clinic at Cornell Law School. He is a 1981 graduate of Hamilton College and a 1984 graduate of Harvard Law School. Prior to joining the Cornell law faculty in 2007, Professor Jacobson practiced law in New York City (1985-1993) and Providence, Rhode Island (1994-2006). Brandy Shufutinsky serves as director of FDD’s Program on Education and National Security. She has been published in Newsweek, Jewish Journal, the New York Post, The Jerusalem Post, Sapir, White Rose Magazine, and JNS. Brandy holds her doctorate in international and multicultural education from the University of San Francisco, her MSW from the University of Southern California, and her M.A. in international relations from the University of San Diego.
Andrew Pessin is Professor of Philosophy at Connecticut College, former Campus Bureau Editor for The Algemeiner, and Founding Director of the Institute for the Critical Study of Antizionism. His recent books include Israel Breathes, World Condemns (2 vols.); Refuting the Lies Told About Israel; Anti-Zionism on Campus: The University, Free Speech, and BDS; and Poisoning the Wells: Antisemitism in America. His articles address many aspects of the campus environment for Jews and for Israel supporters, including the question of whether antizionism is antisemitism (the short answer is yes). He has also published four novels, including Nevergreen (2021), an academic satire about campus cancel culture and its harmful effects on the Jews which, unfortunately, proved prophetic after the October 7 massacre. I hope this “Online Event” provides more than just talk and various legalisms. Jews need more than talk: they need weapons, along with the will and skills to use them which comes from practice, and training such as you find at the various Krav Maga studios. During the 1930s, Jews in Hungary faced the the violent antisemitism we see today in Europe and the U.S. That’s why Imi Lichtenfeld developed self defense techniques for Jews. Calling the war on Jews and Israel a “civil rights issue” misses the point and serves to distract Jews from what they need to do to survive. They need to learn how fight with more than just words, otherwise they will perish.
I understand your frustration, but Legal Insurrection is a legal blog. It can’t be all things to all people. We are fortunate that Bill Jacobson cares so much about this issue, but we cannot expect the entire gamut of responses to be covered here.
Regarding the civil rights issue: civil rights as an academic and soxial pursuit has been abused for decades now and remembering that unfair and even predatory behavior towards Jews in out society is what a civil rights movement should be about. Civil rights used to be a righteous cause. Putting Israel closer to the center of it is a smart move as it forces the behavior of the Left to be scrutinized and exposed, as it should be. That is in part a legal process, and totally appropriate for this blog. The legal fight needs to be taken to the Left.
And, yes, we should also kick their asses.
I appreciate LI’s efforts and I’m sure the Professor understands this: ultimately, it’s all antisemitism. Anti-Zionism is just the newest code word.
Jews are under attack. Not Zionists. The terrorist sympathizers aren’t protesting outside of Israel-supporting churches.
How wide is the Overton Window on Jews right now? Is there anything about them that can’t be said? Is there any person disqualified from public office due to what he says and thinks about Jews?
No amount of guns or self-defense strategies will save you when your neighbors come to get you. Don’t kid yourself.
