BREAKING: Trump Says Iran Deal Near, Hormuz to Reopen

“An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

President Donald Trump said Saturday that a peace agreement with Iran has been “largely negotiated” and will include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, signaling what could become the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the Iran crisis erupted earlier this year.

The statement follows months of escalating tensions that saw Iran effectively shut down or threaten passage through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical energy chokepoints in the world. Roughly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas traffic normally passes through the narrow waterway between Iran, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The disruption sent energy markets into chaos and triggered fears of a broader regional war.

“I am in the Oval Office at the White House where we just had a very good call with President Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, of The United Arab Emirates, Emir Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, and Minister Ali al-Thawadi, of Qatar, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah, of Pakistan, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, of Türkiye, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, of Egypt, King Abdullah II, of Jordan, and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, of Bahrain, concerning the Islamic Republic of Iran, and all things related to a Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE. An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed. Separately, I had a call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, which, likewise, went very well. Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly. In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

The announcement also marks a dramatic turn from Trump’s posture earlier in the conflict. In March, Trump issued a blunt 48-hour ultimatum warning Iran that if the Strait of Hormuz were not reopened “WITHOUT THREAT,” the United States would strike Iranian infrastructure, including power plants. At the time, Trump warned:

“If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!”

Now, after months of military pressure, shipping disruptions, and diplomatic maneuvering involving nearly every major regional power, Trump is signaling that a broader agreement may finally be close.

The details of the framework remain unclear, particularly how enforcement of “safe passage” through the strait would work and what concessions Iran may have made behind closed doors. But if the agreement holds, reopening the Strait of Hormuz would ease one of the largest pressure points hanging over the global economy since the conflict began.

You just watch. Somebody somewhere will complain about it. As my late mom would say, “Some people, if they died and went to Heaven tonight / Would cry and complain because the lights are too bright”.

If the Iranian regime agreeing to ‘open the Strait of Hormuz’ is the highlight selected to tout this effect as a success is kinda the ‘high water mark’ of it? Yeah, a bunch of people will very correctly complain about it. Including me.

Yeah I’ll complain. What I want on my list is:
    = No nuclear weapons ever.
    – No ICBMs (IRBMs ok – let Europe sweat),
    – No funding/training of proxy groups through the world but especially
Hamas, Houthis, Hezbollah (nothing starting with an H),
    – Amnesty for protestors (if they are still alive).
    – Opening the Strait

This is the top of my list of demands but I have more. I imagine to Iran those are all deal
    breakers,

Obviously we need more details but if the general tenor is touting ‘opening the Strait of Hormuz’ as something being agreed to as a ‘big win/concession’ from Iran ….that is …well short of expectations, at least my own. Hopefully there’s a lot more in the details to bring home to the American public to show for the effort than mere assurances from Iran re compliance with normal freedom of navigation in international waters.

Absolutely right. If I recall the strait was open before we started all this. I get they were close to a nuke but if we do not get, at the very least, them giving up all their enriched uranium then I would have to ask why we bothered.

I hope it’s last straw for them, because it will be broken again.

I notice Israel wasn’t in the call with muslims, I don’t think that is good at all. Who disagrees and if so why?

The objectives stated early in the conflict for our armed forces were:

The destruction of the Iranian Navy which seems to be largely accomplished.

The severe degrading of Iran’s ballistic missile program and ability to attack our bases and allies.

The destruction of Iran’s capabilities to build nuclear weapons. Not sure on this one but it appears that this is either likely accomplished or near enough that their ability to deploy and use nuclear weapons will not be a factor for a number of years.

Opening up the straight will help the economies of many of our allies which is not all bad. If the straight is open it is a major blow the IRRG’s major ally the Democratic party. The move is likely to help drive down gas prices by Labor Day and to lesson attacks on Trump’s forever war.

The results at the end of the day will probably be major losses for the IRRG and the Democratic party.

We don’t need a deal for the top 3 objectives in your list. We obtained them through force. If we had just withdrawn then the strait would have opened. There would be no incentive at that point for Iran to try and close it.

Reasons why I tend to believe this:

The number of middle eastern leaders mentioned in the tweet. It’s not just The Donald being The Donald.

Reasons why I tend not to believe this:

We’re dealing with radical islamists – the worst of humanity – who believe their martyrdom is the gateway to eternity. These are people that lie, deceive, torture and murder to retain power, all the while cloaking themselves in the mantle of their “prophet”. I wouldn’t trust them one iota.

We’ll see, won’t we?

If this comes to pass, it’s a HUGE win for Trump. Gasoline prices, in addition to prices for anything else that uses petroleum, will plummet.

And the world is different now that Venezuela has been liberated with China and Cuba cut off from their oil.

The economics of Iranian oil as well as the geopolitical importance of the Strait of Hormuz is not what it once was.

We’re now once again the petroleum superpower thanks to Trump (and in spite of Chicago Jesus and the Kiddie Diddler from Scranton) and those in the oil biz that took long odds to bring us here today.

Yawn. Weve been hours away from a deal for eight weeks. I only believe the numbers on the pump.
