Swalwell Plans to Resign From Congress Amid Sexual Assault, Misconduct Allegations

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) announced his intention to resign from Congress after numerous sexual assault and misconduct allegations spilled out in less than a week:

His statement (emphasis mine):

“I am deeply sorry for my family, staff and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the past mistakes I did make.I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress.I will work with my staff in the coming days to ensure they are able, in my absence, to serve the needs of the good people of the 14th Congressional district.”

Key word: PLAN.

Wording is everything. The statement isn’t a resignation letter. Swalwell has not resigned.

Using the word “plan” gives Swalwell a potential out and allows him to retain his seat.

This is the man who ran for president and for California governor, having to withdraw from the latter race due to these allegations.
