Mamdani’s Volunteer Snow Shovelers Will Need Several Forms of ID to Sign Up

Towards the end of January, when a large part of the country was hit with a winter storm that dumped a lot of snow along its path, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was seen out on the streets shoveling snow, with cameras conveniently nearby, all to show he was committed to helping residents get back to their daily lives.

But while his technique earned mixed reviews…

…any praise was soon met with widespread criticism as the homeless death toll in NYC from the winter weather reached 19 amid Mamdani’s steadfast refusal to clear dangerous homeless encampments, despite the substantial health risks to the homeless and Big Apple citizens alike.

Another snowstorm is about to hit New York City over the next few days, and forecasters are saying it could be the biggest blizzard there since 2017.

Mamdani held a press conference on Saturday to discuss storm prep and ways NYC residents could help their neighbors. One option he mentioned was for people to sign up to be paid “emergency snow shovelers”:

We’re utilizing 33 DSNY vans and two DSNY buses to transport shovelers where they’re needed, faster. And for those who want to do more to help your neighbors and earn some extra cash, you, too, can become an emergency snow shoveler. Just show up at your local sanitation garage between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. tomorrow with your paperwork, which is accessible online at nyc.gov/snow, and you can get started right away.

Watch:

As of 6 p.m. Saturday, around 1,000 volunteers had signed up to be emergency snow shovelers:

But what was the paperwork volunteers needed to sign up? Oh, just two photos and three forms of identification:

To be eligible, applicants must be:

To register for an appointment, workers must have:

Just as a reminder, Mamdani’s political party, the Democratic Socialists of America, expressly opposes voter ID requirements in any form:

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) New York chapter, of which Mamdani is a member and which enthusiastically endorsed the mayor, has strongly advocated against voter ID requirements in elections. The DSA has even called recent election integrity legislation a “campaign to reverse the gains of the Civil Rights Movement and marginalize working-class Americans” — yet Mamdani’s emergency labor push requires would-be shovelers to arrive with identification and paperwork in hand.

Needless to say, the jokes just wrote themselves:

Author and legal scholar Ilya Shapiro quipped that “This is more onerous than Georgia’s voting law, which Biden labeled not just Jim Crow 2.0 but Jim Eagle. I guess Mamdani is running a Jim Albatross operation!”

Sure sounds like it!

Your rules, Democrats. Your rules.
