Gavin Newsom Says Democrats Need to be More ‘Culturally Normal’ to Win

During a recent appearance on CNN, California Governor Gavin Newsom said that Democrats need to be more culturally normal and focus less on identity politics and things like pronouns.
Newsom is obviously desperate to recalibrate his image in anticipation of a 2028 presidential run. It’s why he’s everywhere right now, saying different things to different audiences.
The trouble for Newsom and his party is that, although he is making a valid point here, Democrats are simply not capable of making the change he is suggesting.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., told CNN’s Dana Bash that Democrats will need to be more “culturally normal” on issues like transgender athletes in women’s sports if they want to win voters.
The “Inside Politics” host aired the rest of her lengthy interview with the California governor and potential 2028 presidential candidate about his new book, “Young Man in a Hurry,” on Monday. One of the topics included whether he still believed transgender athletes were being used as a “wedge issue” in the party.
“From a tactical perspective, from the prism of purely politics, there’s no doubt that the Democratic Party needs to be, dare I say, more culturally normal. I believe that – less prone to spending a disproportionate amount of time on pronouns, identity, politics, more focused on tabletop issues, things that really matter, the stacking of stress in terms of electricity bills and childcare costs and healthcare and obviously housing costs and how easily we get trapped in that, how I’ve fallen prey to that,” Newsom said.
Newsom claimed to have spoken from his experience being at the forefront of Democrats defending the issue and after receiving backlash for his more moderate position, arguing that there needed to be more nuance.

Democrats cannot and will not let go of these issues. In a recent episode of the ‘Pod Save America’ podcast, which is hosted by former Obama staffers and is probably more in touch with the Democrat base than Newsom, one of the hosts suggested that “Democrats need to build up trust with the trans community.”
Interestingly, when I went back to Twitter/X to find the video, which I wanted to include in this post, it was gone. I can’t find the clip anywhere, and it appears to have been nuked from their Facebook page as well. How telling.

Newsome is anything but normal. It occurs to be that a perfect democrat ticket would be Newsome/AOC, The dumb and dumber ticket. Perfect for those democratic voters that would vote for a glass of water if a D was affixed to it.
Yes they are two peas in a pod; the memes write themselves. With that being said, I know several people who would vote for them and think they are amazing. Newsome and AOC to me wouldn’t even be good candidates for a high school yearbook committee let alone the presidency. I don’t think we have seen the person the Dems will pick. He will be a blank slate with no particular record so they can pretend he is the Generic Democrat. The Generic Democrat wins. I don’t think AOC, Newsome, or Kamala can be turned into a GD. They might be able to do it with Shapiro but the base Dems are pretty antisemitic so I doubt he will get it either.
But my crystal ball is pretty cloudy and a little cracked so what do I know.

I seriously doubt the Democrats will pick a Jew. They lose the muslim vote, the devout Catholic vote (Vance would never vote for him), the black vote and, if we are being honest, at least some of the Jewish vote.
Muslim vote surely, but I don’t think “devout Catholics” have that mindset. Catholic training is replete with respect for “Judeo-Christian” just-about-everything. In high school, we cheered on Israel’s victories in the Six Day War.

I’m not sure whether NYC generalizes to the rest of the country, but to the degree it does, Shapiro becomes a pretty attractive candidate. The so-called “fringe right”–which aren’t right wing at all, just the crazy wing–won’t vote for him, but that’s a tiny fraction of the vote.
