OK, this just came out across the wires, so information is scarce.
The Department of Homeland Security told Fox News that the driver, an illegal Venezuelan alien connected to the Tren de Aragua, tried to run over a Border Patrol agent, who fired at the car in self-defense.
The passenger is affiliated with the TdA prostitution ring:

The vehicle driver is believed to be a member of the vicious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents.Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene. This situation is evolving and more information is forthcoming.”
Of course, the Democrats who run the city wasted no time in using the shooting to demean federal law enforcement.
Gee, I’m guessing none of these people waited until the facts came out. But as we all know, facts don’t matter.
Mayor Keith Wilson also tried the tough guy attitude:

I call on every Portlander to represent our values and to show up with calm and purpose during this difficult time. Portland does not respond to violence with violence. We respond with clarity, unity, and a commitment to justice. We must stand together to protect Portland.”

Two people are in the hospital following a shooting involving federal agents.On Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 2:18 p.m., Portland Police Officers responded to the 10200 block of Southeast Main Street on a report of a shooting. Officers confirmed that federal agents had been involved in a shooting. Portland Police were not involved in the incident.At 2:24 p.m., officers received information that a man who had been shot was calling and requesting help in the area of Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside. Officers responded and found a male and female with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers applied a tourniquet and summoned emergency medical personnel. The patients were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown. Officers have determined the two people were injured in the shooting involving federal agents.
“We are still in the early stages of this incident,” said Portland Police Chief Bob Day. “We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more.”
