As Legal Insurrection reported, Virginia Democrats have wasted no time in 2026 reminding voters who’s in charge of state government, with the state Senate and House voting last week to advance a constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters – presumably in April – would pave the way for them to redraw congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms.
On Saturday, former congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D) was sworn in as the state’s next governor, and she made sure to mention in her inaugural address that the safety and security of “all” – including “immigrant neighbors” (read: illegals) would be a top priority for her administration.
“As we write this next chapter, we will focus on the security and safety of all our neighbors. We we will take action to prevent gun violence, to support Virginians struggling with addiction, and to address the mental health crisis impacting our kids and our neighbors. And in Virginia, our hard working, law abiding immigrant neighbors will know that when we say that we will focus on the security and safety of all of our neighbors, we mean them too.”
She wasted no time getting right down to business, immediately ending Virginia’s cooperation with ICE as her first act:
On her first day as Governor, Abigail Spanberger made a decisive move: she vetoed Executive Order 47, ending Virginia’s participation in the federal 287(g) program that allowed local law enforcement to act as ICE agents.
This swift action represents a major victory for immigrant advocacy groups like CASA in Action, whose years of organizing and pressure from immigrant communities helped shape this outcome.
The decision carries particular weight given that Latino voters were a decisive force in Spanberger’s election, with the largest shifts from the 2024 presidential election occurring in Virginia’s most heavily Hispanic communities—particularly Prince William County, home to thousands of Salvadoran and Central American families.
Watch:
Former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (R), who was ousted by Virginia voters in favor of a Democrat candidate who previously expressed a desire to kill a former GOP colleague and to see the man’s children die in his wife’s arms, was highly critical of Spanberger’s actions, noting they would result in more Virginia residents becoming victimized:
Within the few first hours of Democrats having complete control in Richmond, they have made it easier for illegal immigrants who commit crimes against Virginians to remain in the Commonwealth by repealing EO 47.By directing our local law enforcement to stop working with federal law enforcement agencies, our streets have become less safe with a stroke of the pen. This is a disaster for the public safety of the Commonwealth.Mark my words, there will be Virginians who will be robbed, raped and murdered as a result of this anti public safety executive order. No one should be surprised.
This will not deter the ICE/CBP mission, of course, but it will certainly make the operations there more interesting, not to mention likely set the stage for the same dangerous scenarios we’ve seen play out in blue states like Minnesota, where Democrats are encouraging residents to harass and document immigration enforcement agents:
Relatedly, Spanberger’s actions remind us all over again where Democrats in this country stand: with criminal illegals over American citizens:
Lastly, does this mean Virginia will have their federal funding cut next month?
I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
