Brown University and MIT Murder Suspect Found Dead
Identified as Claudio Manuel Nueves Valente, 48, a former Brown student and Portuguese national
Various police authorities have announced that the suspect in the murder of two students at Brown University and of an MIT professor at his home has been found dead after police closed in on him. He apparently was a former student, contrary to some reports that he was a current student.

NBC News reports:
Federal officials said tonight that they could confirm the death of the “Brown University and MIT professor shooter,” adding that “there’s no longer a threat to the public” in a news statement….
Two guns were found at the scene where officials discovered the body of the suspect in the Brown University shooting, Rhode Island’s attorney general said.
The body was found in Salem, New Hampshire, officials said. The suspect is believed to have killed himself.
“He was found dead, with a satchel, with two firearms and evidence in the car that matches exactly what we see at the scene here in Providence,” Peter Neronha said.
During a press conference, the Providence police chief said there was no known antisemitism motive.
Claudio Neves Valente attended Brown Fall 2000 spring 2001 -master of science physics took leave of absence then withdrew 2003
Physics classes usually in the Barus building . He spent a great deal of time in the building while he was a student .
And 25 years later he returns ?

Comments
Aww… all my comments are on the other thread. But this news deserves it’s own.
I;m sure we are all curious now about his motive and whether he was also the perp in the murder of the MIT professor.
Apparently so….
Various police authorities have announced that the suspect in the murder of two students at Brown University AND of an MIT professor at his home has been found dead after police closed in on him
police can announce anything that they want now that there will be no contrary opinions form the one that knows
There’s no chance that Iran had anything to do with this.
Portugal citizen
Had a student visa
Applied for a green card but hadn’t taken a class since 2021
Of course he was still here, no one has gone after expired student visas
Did you mean 2001? I’d like to know what he has been doing here for the last 25yrs if he wasn’t taking classes. I’d also like to know how he got the firearms.
“I’d also like to know how he got the firearms.”
Legally-admitted aliens are allowed to purchase firearms. Beyond that, this would only reinforce that gun control does not work.
Aliens admitted on a non immigrant basis may not buy/posses firearms with very few exceptions such as foreign LEO admitted in a LEO capacity on official business, a temp visa for hunting + State hunting license. A lawful permanent resident Alien may buy firearms.
I wonder if the Chief of Police has a green card
You would have to ask him—but make sure you ask in Spanish as his English is a bit sketchy.
He reminds me of Jose Jimenez, except less intelligible.
Did the professor know or was related to a student in the Brown class, but not in the study group at the time, which would explain why the class was targeted?
The professor and the perp went to school together in Portugal
That does not explain why he shot up the study group, however, although he may have hated the school and that was his way to lash out.
Apparently, the janitor had a run in with the guy and that led to the car. Otherwise, the planning where there were few cameras may have led him to get away free.
True. Study group was very popular with Brown students. Teacher of class the study group was for was absent at time. Teacher most likely was the target I would think and when she wasn;t there he just acted out due to rage.
Was she Portuguese?
According to some reports the cameras may have been turned off – some anti-Israel / anti-ICE group had earlier asked the uni to turn them off so their “activists” (ie vandals / folks assaulting Jews) who were foreigners here legally / illegally wouldn’t have to worry about being deported because of being videoed vandalizing and assaulting.
Mission Accomplished, I guess.
The uni has so far been all “no comment” when asked if they complied with the request – which I takes as a “yes, we did – but now we’re going to get sued SO much…”.
Providence authorities say there is a good reason why there were no cameras—it was an old building and you cannot put new cameras in an old building.
I have heard rumors that the US Capitol, which was built in 1793, is brimming with cameras. But that has not been verified.
Didn’t the Brown U students *demand* barring the local PD from campus AND to DeFund the Campus PD just a couple years ago?
I did a Google & AI (not a fan!) and got only a milquetoast comment that the admin “got the request” but didn’t take any particular action … or some such tripe. (Am I getting gaslighted … again?)
That tune sure changed last week when they were pleading for a “good guy with a gun” to show up … and complained they were not fast enough!

So now that we know that Mustapha person was not the shooter, we have to wonder why he was wiped from the university site, and why just now. Was it just a coincidence? Were they worried that he was the shooter?
we do not know that Mustapha was not the shooter, what we have is a police statement and a dead guy that can tell no tales.
Those are good questions. Not sure we’ll ever know, though.
Off topic: Helen Dugan was found guilty of obstructing federal agents, which is a felony, but not guilty of concealing a wanted person, which is a misdemeanor.

That’s strange. I read, I think Wednesday, that the jury deliberations were going to start today
Did not know thIs
Nuno F.G. Loureiro, 47, The Engineer was Portuguese
The assassin was Portuguese
They obviously knew each-other, and there may have been bad blood.
There have been numerous fictional detective stories in which a bogus suspect was announced in order to put the real perp off guard.
I’m holding my breath.
For what? Having the real guy dead is the better option.
Another failed engineer with Asberger’s
I did wonder if he might have shot the MIT professor out of jealousy, especially now that we know he’s here on an expired student visa.
Aspergers doesn’t necessarily make you violent.
Is he done of a real suicide? Or will they find out that the gun in his left hand and the entry wounds on the right side of his skull?
I think that you might be on to something
He was a good man who was holed up in storage facility and was planning to flee in the fall.
Will law enforcement try to establish motive(s) or will they just declare victory and move on?
How do these “authorities” know that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted? Did any of them see or hear Neves-Valente alive and then stay on scene until he was found dead? Neves-Valente’s death before he could be interrogated just seems too convenient.
Yes, the “Why Brown?” question needs to be answered. Did he hope to find the MIT guy there for some reason? Was the Brown prof connected to MIT prof somehow? Or one of the victims?
However, one thing from the reporting about who provided the evidence is that it seems to actually be the Providence PD who “cracked” this, and not the Feds.
The suspect is dead. How convenient.
The motive is the biggest mystery. Obviously there was bad blood between the two Portuguese nationals, but without writings or internet postings it is unlikely we will find out more.
The shooter and the professor knew each other years ago and this is where psychosis and impulse control comes into play. The professor was well liked and successful while the shooter had poor success in life. The shooter becomes enraged and seething over the years and perhaps even hears voices in his head, while his classmate has a wife and children, a great job and is happy. The shooter has zip and it grinds on his mind of how unfair it all is, and that he should have the same life and success.
That’s all it takes to murder for a psychotic. Normal people can’t conceive of the thoughts of a psychotic, therefore can’t conceive of the why.
