Some of these groups that are out there on the internet or maybe even on TV, actually calling to up the political violence. We’re hearing that a lot from the right.
Right now, Democrats across the board are saying we need to come together. We need to turn down the rhetoric. We need to stop this political violence. It’s shocking to me that so many Republicans are not doing that, not following the lead of Speaker Johnson, but actually following the lead of Donald Trump, who is just trying to call out extremist left wing groups blame this on Democrats. We heard that from my colleague Nancy Mace before we even know who the shooter is. That’s not a way to solve this problem.
If the President is serious about stopping political violence, then maybe he should start by rescinding the pardons for all the domestic terrorists who came to the Capitol on January 6 to kill cops, to kill Speaker Pelosi to kill Vice President Pence.
Let’s have an honest conversation about the origins of this political violence and why it has risen so dramatically since Donald Trump’s first term.

FBI Press Conference

Authorities believe they recovered the gun used to assassinate Kirk:
FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls made the announcement during a Thursday morning press conference at Utah Valley University.
The weapon “is a high powered bolt action rifle. That rifle was recovered in a wooded area where the shooter had fled. So the FBI laboratory will be analyzing this weapon. Investigators have also collected footwear, the impression of a palm print and forearm imprints for analysis,” Bohls said.
“We are not sure how far he has gone,” Bohls added about the assassin.
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason confirmed that the shooter appeared to be “of college age,” but he declined to offer more identifying details.
Mason said footage from the campus showed the shooter climbed to the roof of a building overlooking Kirk’s event. He then jumped from the building and fled to a nearby neighborhood after the shooting.
The FBI has footage of him. The agents believe they can identify him.

ATF and other law-enforcement located an older model imported Mauser .30-06 caliber bolt action rifle wrapped in a towel in a wooded area near the campus. The location of the firearm appears to match the suspects route of travel. The spent cartridge was still chambered in addition to three unspent rounds at the top fed magazine. All cartridges have engraved wording on them, expressing transgender and anti-fascist ideology.

More like 8mm. 30.06 isn’t a caliber you normally find with a Mauser.
Post-war, TONS of these were re-barreled, mostly to 30.06. My grandfather had one. It was the first high-caliber rifle I used.
Interesting–I did not know that.
Here’s a photo of the weapon allegedly used. It’s representative of what happened to many of the Mauser’s that were ‘sportified.’ My grandfather’s started out life as a typical Gewehr 98. He had the original two (or maybe three) piece ash stock replaced with a sport-style walnut stock. But, I’ve seen them in composite as well, as this one seems to be. I imagine the cost is EXACTLY the reason why many were rebarreled. Honestly, I never asked my pops why he did, but that would make sense. German ammo would have been very difficult to obtain post-war.

Initially, they just described the rifle…. not the optics nor being sporterized. I have shot iron sights in competition out to 600 yards but the old Mauser ladder would have been an amazing shot. The question some are asking… is all of this retrieved material real or diversionary? Almost too convenient. Hope ballistics is good match. Once again, many people saw the shooter on the roof but where was security? Maybe we should pitch in a few bucks to buy Keystone Kop DVDs so that the campus cops can refresh security protocols.

By the way, for those of you tracking your “assault weapons” on your “2025 card,” the 98 in Gewehr 98 is short for 1898.
I don’t know about 8mm particularly, but I know a great many WW1 and WW2 rifles were converted to 30-06 because it was THE hunting round Americans used.
The 8mm Mauser is comparable to the 30-06 with the “06” design derived from the Mauser cartridge. Mauser upgraded the 8mm for the K98 to the pointed spitzer bullet and with that the US retooled the 30-03 to 30-06. US also stole Mauser action design. The Mauser action is considered the final refinement of the bolt action.
I personally have a 30-06 Mauser.
Mine was an 8mm K98. 30-06 would certainly be cheaper ammo.
That’s why many were rebarreled to .30-06, along with losing the weird-for-a-sporter stepped barrel profile on the military barrels.

Instead, he leaves carrying the gun (makes his escape that much less certain) but then drops it after a distance. He also continues on in a straight line (says the FBI).
Implies to me he is possibly out of shape, plus has no military experience.
Leaving the rifle in the woods, then backtracking before angling off another direction would show at least some strategy. So far, none shown.

I tend to agree with your assessment. My spidey sense tells me the local cops thought they had their man. I’ve seen the video of the arrest. The man was walking with a hunting rifle when the swept him up. I’ll give Pash Katel a pass on this one. I feel he was trying to as transparent as possible.
Patel may have been commenting on the arrest of a second suspect, who was also subsequently released. His comments were nearly coincidental to the second suspect’s release, and enough time had passed that he was almost certainly already aware that the first suspect had been released.
I’d like to hear a little more about the two old men they interrogated and released. They were detained for a reason and I wonder if they were trying to cause a distraction to take the heat off the real shooter.

The ‘shot’ itself doesn’t scream ‘pro.’ From an elevated position at only 200M, that’s a nothing shot to someone with a reasonable amount of experience and preparation when using a quality firearm (which a Mauser is), good ammo and a scope that’s been properly set-up. But, his behavior as he exfills is what raises one of my eyebrows. It’s likely impossible to draw any conclusions from a few video stills. I would really like to see any video they may have because as you point, he sure seems to be thinking about important things, like limiting his DNA and fingerprint trail.
And/But, he stashes the weapon in a predictable place that it’s quickly found. It’s all very odd.

From everything I’ve heard, the killer shot from the roof of a building, so how did the rifle get out in the wooded area? Did the killer carry it with him when he left the roof? If so, how did he conceal it? I’m not a firearms expert, but I would think it would have a fairly long barrel, and somebody running away from a shooting obviously toting a gun is likely to be noticed. When was the picture of the person-of-interest taken? Because he’s clearly not carrying a rifle in it.
You can find a photo of Mausers online. It’s a rifle, but the barrel is not all that long. Soldiers carried it all day in every major war between Spanish-American and WWII. It’s heavy by today’s plastic and titanium standards, but not by the standards of your dad’s hunting buddies.
