American Association of University Professors (AAUP) President Todd Wolfson: “No Weapons Should be Sent to Israel”

American Association of University Professors (AAUP) President Todd Wolfson: “No Weapons Should be Sent to Israel”

“Israel is purposefully destroying the educational infrastructure of Palestine… And if that’s the case, and we can unify around that, then we will take a stand and call for an end to the scholasticide.”

In an interview with Inside Higher Ed earlier this week, American Association of University Professors (AAUP) President Todd Wolfson made one thing clear: “No weapons should be sent to Israel.”

It was the only coherent policy position (not counting “college for all”) Wolfson articulated during the softball Q&A. The conversation was all about the fight—against Trump, of course, whose name came up 29 times, followed a distant second by Chris Rufo.

Trump’s “weaponization” of antisemitism under Title VI has put academic freedom under attack, said Wolfson. So the group’s focus is now “getting our people into the streets, fighting back.”

“We need to be able to militantly show how concerned we are.”

As a reminder, the AAUP used to be the gold standard for academic freedom, but now, for all practical purposes, it’s an ultra-progressive labor union. The scholarly organization historically stood firmly against academic boycotts as assaults on the free exchange of ideas, but that has changed as anti-Israel activists have captured its agenda.

In fact, from the moment he took office last year, Wolfson vowed to turn the once-esteemed group into a “fighting organization.” And the side it’s always fighting against is Israel, as I’ve written here:

By this spring, the AAUP’s “anti-Zionist transformation” was complete. The group was no longer limiting itself to performative policy statements like the one we covered last year here. It promoted its own anti-Israel programming—a “Scholasticide in Palestine” webinar to explore “Israeli attacks against Palestinian education.” And it jumped on the lawfare bandwagon against the White House, filing two federal complaints on the same day, targeting the administration’s efforts to combat campus antisemitism.

During this week’s interview, Wolfson talked about these recent tactics used by the AAUP to bash Israel in defense of its members’ academic freedom to bash Israel:

Q: You mentioned Palestine. What position, what action, if any, does national AAUP need to take on Israel and Palestine at this moment?

A: We believe strongly that no weapons should be sent to Israel, at all. Not defensive or offensive, nothing.

What do we do in the U.S., where antisemitism has been used as a weapon, in many ways, by the Trump administration to bring universities to heel—and many times stripping out, or threatening to strip out, hundreds of millions of research dollars that often affect Jewish faculty members? Versus what our position should be on the conflict in the Middle East?

First and foremost, our job is to safeguard ourselves at home and to set a vision that aligns with what we’re trying to do in the United States. We need to stand up for academic freedom, for freedom of speech, for freedom of assembly for our students so they can protest the war—the genocide, excuse me—that’s taking place in Gaza.

We need to stand up to the weaponization of antisemitism in the Title VI process. And we need to make sure that we defend our members.

We think the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism, which does not get involved with questions of the Israeli state at all, is a much more apt way of defining antisemitism.

The numbers of universities and faculty and university presidents [in Gaza] that have been killed and universities that have been destroyed in this war is mammoth. We are certainly educating our members on this concept of scholasticide. [*]

It seems pretty obvious that they are—but if, in fact, Israel is purposefully destroying the educational infrastructure, both K–12 and higher ed, of Palestine, and of Gaza, that stands against our values of academic freedom. And if that’s the case, and we can unify around that, then we will take a stand and call for an end to the scholasticide. [emphasis mine]

For Wolfson, Israel is a rallying point that will unite the AAUP with other left-leaning groups in the fight against Trump:

Higher ed workers alone cannot beat back the Trump administration. It needs to be a multisector fight. Federal workers—who are also under attack—we need to build alliance with them. K–12 teachers, health-care workers, immigrant workers, progressive community organizations all need to build an aligned front that is ready to take risks[.]

Only now that the AAUP has abandoned its founding mission, that fight is a fight to perpetuate the group’s own political power—by feeding off an age-old, “multisector” grievance.

[*][Note that there’s no evidence Israel intended “scholasticide”—but Hamas has been shown to embed their operations within school buildings and other civilian centers, leading to collateral damage, according to Jewish advocacy groups who protested the AAUP webinar.]

Israel is systematically destroying all the faux educational infrastructure that teaches that it’s a noble thing to kill Christians and Jews.

Scholasticide? What a nitwit. Professor? How about promoter or better yet, proselytizer.

He should go to MEMRI and check out the highlights of Palestinian education.

What about their “cides” they perpetrate on AMERICAN kids in their useless ‘studies” programs? They are “Brainciding” the young nitwits – turning them into anti-America, anti-Jewish militants! And IF the Israelis are disrupting the “education” of Gazan’s children, that can only be a GOOD thing – maybe they’ll learn more about the horrors of hamass by SEEING the atrocities that they commit against their own people!

The more negative energy these anti Trump/Israel Morans invest in bringing down Trump or Israel, the stronger Trump and Israel get. You’d think they’d have figured it out by now.

His PhD is in journalism and media studies. Not exactly a rigorous discipline.

Does he know how Hamas feels about educating girls and women?
Why doesn’t he travel to Gaza and take up teaching grade school. I’m sure he’ll be welcomed and taken in by the diversity loving people of that area.
Failing that, he could be jettisoned off of this planet.
I like the second idea best.

Does he know how Hamas feels about educating girls and women?

I don’t know that either. Do you? Hamas is not the Taliban. Many/most Islamists are for women’s education. The Iranian mullahs have promoted it, because it fits in well with their worldview. So it shouldn’t be surprising if Hamas does the same. The problem isn’t educating women, it’s what they’re teaching everyone, male and female. How to be better soldiers in the war to wipe the Jews out. How to pass on that hatred to the next generation. How to keep the fire of hatred burning in ones heart. You know, the three Rs.

We do know that they segregate schools according to sex, forbid males from teaching females and there is mandatory Koran training. Pretty much indoctrination to keep women subservient to men and their chattel

        Milhouse in reply to diver64. | August 23, 2025 at 12:10 pm

Single-sex education is a good thing; we should have more of it here. If girls’ schools only hire female teachers, then obviously they have plenty of trained female teachers, which means they support women’s education. And koran is mandatory for both sexes. So we have no reason to suppose that they’re against educating girls and women. It’s only the Taliban that are opposed.

“Israel is purposefully destroying the educational infrastructure of Palestine

LOL. “educational infrastructure” … as if.

And there is no such thing as “Palestine”. It’s interesting how the newest leftist thing is to keep repeating “Palestine” as if it actually exists.

for freedom of assembly for our students so they can protest the war—the genocide, excuse me—that’s taking place in Gaza.

LOL.

Intinmidation of other students is not “protest”. And there no, excuse me, “genocide” going on by Israel. If there were, it would be obvious and it would be done already.

The only genocide around Israel is the hamas/fakestinian attempts to obliterate Israel and Jews. Israel is forced to defend itself against the lowest form of despicable human, bent on the worst, most barbaric destruction possible. Such wars are tough – see the allied actions in WWII (which is how real wars are fought).

This Wolfson is a despicable, lowlife, self-hating nihilistic moron. Not a unique case, as that is the base of the American left.

“Palaestina” was a Roman province, named after the Romans had conquered Judaea. The Romans invoked the name of the Jews’ enemy, the Philistines, as a triumphant insult.

All of this took place 600 years before the founding of the supremacist, totalitarian, belligerent, hate-filled and pathology-laden ideology of “Submission.”

The efforts of Arab invaders from Arabia to re-brand themselves by retroactively co-opting the name of a Roman province that was founded 600 years before Submission’s founding is a brazen bit of propagandistic historical revisionism.

Jews are the indigenous people of modern-day Israel and its surrounding lands.

the newest leftist thing is to keep repeating “Palestine” as if it actually exists
Well, no, that isn’t exactly new. It’s been going on for at least 50 years.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to GWB. | August 21, 2025 at 6:04 pm

No, not really. Sure, they’ve been talking about “Palestinians” for 50 years but no one has talked about any magical nation called “Palestine”. This idea of naming the state at every opportunity is very new. You always heard “Palestinians” before, but never “Palestine”.

the AAUP used to be the gold standard for academic freedom, but now it’s the gold standard for academic clown cars.

This is the vile, stupid and evil Dhimmi-crats’ latest rhetorical line, parroting/regurgitating/promoting Islamofascist/Muslim terrorist propaganda — “Anti-semitism is now being ‘weaponized.’ ”

These reprobates are sick, twisted and evil.

Such an ahole in an organization of aholes in a profession of aholes who work at colleges staffed by aholes, administered by aholes, I can’t believe this is the US anymore. Did I fall asleep and wake up in an alternate universe?

Subotai Bahadur | August 21, 2025 at 4:10 pm

We can be fairly sure that he and the AAUP would be very much in favor of sending weapons and ammunition TO Gaza and to any anti-American Muslim terrorist movement in the world.

“Israel is purposefully destroying the educational infrastructure of Palestine”
AAUP is purposefully destroying the educational infrastructure of the USA.
Remove the log from your own eye first.

“Scholasticide”
My wife heard my eyes roll all the way downstairs.

Also, anyone else think that guy looks like a cross between Mamdani and Zelensky?

Not sure who he looks like but outed himself as a Communist

These college professors who support anyone and any organization who is anti-Israel must be a very depressed group of people who are looking forward to being killed by the very people they support.

Todd Wolfson: Heinrich Himmler would have considered him a “good Jew” back in the 40’s.

“Israel is purposefully destroying the educational infrastructure of Palestine…

The only education infrastructure in the Gaza strip is terrorist training camps. If Israel isn’t purposefully destroying them, it’s run by idiots. (Which it is, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that is not one of the IDF’s explicit goals, but it should be.)

With his name, I suppose he could be German, but I’ve never heard of a Wolfson who wasn’t a Jew. He thinks his antisemitic chums will be content with going after Jews who live in Israel and will spare him.

Wolfson is a flaming moron.

Where DID AAUP find that birdbrain Wolfson? Oh…”Journalism and Media Studies”, another mislabeled term for male bovine excrement. Wolfson certainly is full of what he supposedly studies. I suppose asking for an actual STEM professor who actually had knowledge of the scientific method beyond the social science approach (come up with outlandish leftist conclusion, desperately seek any supporting data, reject any that do not support the predrawn conclusion and label it “racist” or with some other offensive ‘ism’ and then beat it into the ground with hack garbage) would be asking too much for an AAUP president this day and age.
