Acting ICE Director: Some Boston Police Officers Are Helping ICE ‘Behind the Scenes’
“We have so many men and women on the Boston Police Department and other jurisdictions that are so pro-ICE, that want to work with us and that are actually helping us behind the scenes.”
As Legal Insurrection has documented, Boston has been one of the main offenders among the so-called “sanctuary cities” for its refusal to cooperate with ICE on detainers for criminal illegal immigrants, even though the city has become a Ground Zero of sorts for the worst of the worst among violent criminal illegals.
Its mayor, woke Democrat Michelle Wu, has gone so far as to compare ICE agents to neo-Nazis, telling reporters back in June that “I don’t know of any police department that routinely wears masks. We know that there are other groups that routinely wear masks. NSC-131 routinely wears masks.”

More recently, Wu vowed to continue to defy the Trump administration on illegal immigration after being sent a letter from DOJ Attorney General Pam Bondi demanding to know what they were doing to change their policies and procedures in a way that would allow for better cooperation with ICE.
“The U.S. Attorney General asked for a response by today, so here it is,” Wu stated during a Tuesday press conference at Boston City Hall Plaza. “Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures.”
“… do you take the risk but stand up for your community, for your people, and for what’s right? I don’t feel that I have a choice as mayor of this city,” Wu also proclaimed.
In the aftermath of Wu’s announcement, Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons sat down for an interview with Boston talk radio host Howie Carr and informed him and anyone else listening that not only would federal immigration agents be “flooding the zone” in Boston despite Wu’s declarations, but that some Boston police officers were doing what they could to help behind the scenes:
Lyons also stated that Boston Police, while prohibited in some instances from cooperating with ICE by way of the city’s Trust Act, is often helping federal authorities “behind the scenes,” unbeknownst to Mayor Wu.
Those Boston police officers can’t cooperate openly with ICE out of fear of “getting in trouble or getting fired,” Lyons said.
And it’s not just in Boston, Lyons also claimed:
“That’s the issue we’re seeing in so many jurisdictions,” Lyons said. “We have so many men and women on the Boston Police Department and other jurisdictions that are so pro-ICE, that want to work with us and that are actually helping us behind the scenes.
“And that’s what I think local leaders don’t understand, is they need to talk to the men and women on the ground, because … there are so many of these criminal aliens that keep getting released to go out and commit more crimes that the local law enforcement have to deal with. We can take that violent criminal alien instantly out of the neighborhood,” the ICE director added.
If true, it speaks volumes that police officers are willing to risk possible disciplinary action or even firing to assist ICE in whatever ways they can to apprehend criminal illegals in the face of Wu’s defiance.
As Lyons correctly pointed out, these police officers are the people who are on the front lines every day and see what’s going on in their communities more than anyone else. They risk life and limb to arrest lawbreakers, only to be slapped in the face when ICE detainers on criminal illegals aren’t honored.
In turn, this makes city streets more dangerous for innocent citizens who are going about their daily lives.
If Michelle Wu and other Democrat “leaders” in her city had any shame, they’d reconsider and reverse course in the face of so much evidence that contradicts their statements about Boston being “one of the nation’s safest cities,” which it can’t be as long as criminal illegal immigrants are allowed to roam free.

Good for these officers. Hopefully that cooperation spreads. It would be nice to read about this police force mutinying against the commie lib mayor.
Ironically, the Boston Globe is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NYT. Maybe they’ll write an article about their hopes that Boston LEOs will coup Woo.
The New York Times sold its stake in the Globe back in 2013. It doesn’t own the Globe at all.
Knowing many hundreds of current and retired officers (disclosure- I once was one) it does not surprise me this is happening. It’s a shame that it has to be publicized, because that just makes it harder for the cops to do it and increases the chances that someone will start dropping names. As said several places on this thread, the cops are the ones dealing with this foreign invasion every day.
Well, getting criminals out of their jurisdiction makes their jobs easier. You’d have to be crazy not to want to (even if you’re too scared of the local administration to actually defy them)
Shame requires a conscience and self-awareness, and there is no evidence that Leftists are possessed of those qualities.
They should leave Wu and the other city officials to their own devices, Maybe they’ll change their tune after a couple of beatings, rapes, and carjackings So tired of posturing officials insulated from the consequences of their policies.
Alternatively the WH could ramp up the pressure to get basic cooperation from blue cities …simple things like calling ICE when their PD arrests an illegal alien on another charge, holding them till ICE gets there to take them into Federal custody. That and assisting in crowd control when ICE gets swarmed by angry mobs.
Ramp up the pressure on blue city leaders by taking full advantage of the ‘border search exception rule’ which extends 100 miles from the border including the coastline. No warrant needed to conduct brief detention and searches. ICE can set up immigration check points and check every vehicle, every passenger, every pedestrian. Sucks for traffic flow. Hate to see it when every commercial vehicle coming into Boston gets unloaded and searched, one at a time, before the next one can proceed. May as well have DoT folks there to look into the driver’s credentials and training and their log books. Busses too. Plus trains. Absolutely applies to passenger as well as freight traffic. Logan Airport needs special scrutiny as well from customs enforcement. Put Homeland Security Agents outside the airport entrance to screen folks and hand over illegal immigrants to ICE. Workplace immigration enforcement very necessary. May as bring IRS agents while we’re checking paperwork. Plus SSA folks to ensure no employer was avoiding payments by handing out cash instead of reporting employee salaries. Sweep up the public agencies that receive Federal funding to ensure their paperwork, policies and actual practices comply with all provisions of Federal law.
Thinking the same thing. Chicago, New York, LA, SF and other blue states and cities. Not just the roads but ID checks at all airports for flights in and out.
Hell, just put a stringer at the door of every Western Union remittance agent.
Even if there are not Boston PD personnel helping ICE covertly, it would be a good thing to spread the word quietly that there are. That might trigger a political purge in the Boston city government that would make their resistance to the Federal government less effective.

Thank God for police who have a sense of honesty and are willing to help. It’s time that Dem city leaders take a serious look at Mpls. and Rotterdam, England.
I suspect that the Dem city leaders ARE looking at those examples . . . as something they want to emulate.
