‘Make America Healthy Agenda’ Scores More Wins on Froot Loops and Flu Vaccines

‘Make America Healthy Agenda’ Scores More Wins on Froot Loops and Flu Vaccines

States are also enacting MAHA agenda items, including Nebraska (which just secured a waiver to prohibit the purchase of soda and energy drinks with SNAP benefits).

Back in November, when Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., was nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, I argued that he could be the most effective change agent President Donald Trump had appointed.

In an attempt to derail that nomination, The New York Times asserted Kennedy was wrong about the composition of Froot Loops, claiming that the Canadian and American versions were nearly identical. Subsequently, the Times was widely mocked, as the article also noted that the U.S. version contained artificial food colorings and preservatives that were, in fact, the substances actually being targeted by Kennedy.

He was wrong on the ingredient count, they are roughly the same. But the Canadian version does have natural colorings made from blueberries and carrots while the U.S. product contains red dye 40, yellow 5 and blue 1 as well as Butylated hydroxytoluene, or BHT, a lab-made chemical that is used “for freshness,” according to the ingredient label.

Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Agenda” scored another win, as now “American Froot Loops” will soon have natural food colorings like the Canadian version.

WK Kellogg Co. will remove synthetic dyes from its cereals, including Froot Loops and Apple Jacks, by the end of 2027, joining a growing cohort of other US companies that have committed to eliminate colorants such as Red 40 and Yellow 5 from their foods.

The Battle Creek, Michigan-based company said it would remove the additives on its website on Friday. It had previously announced that it wouldn’t introduce new products with the dyes beginning in 2026 while also committing to eliminate the ingredients from its cereals served in schools by the 2026-2027 school year.

The cereal maker said 85% of its sales are in foods that don’t contain the dyes. Products with dyes include Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, and some variations of Rice Krispies.

Candy company Ferrero International SA announced earlier this month that it agreed to buy WK Kellogg for an enterprise value of $3.1 billion.

This victory comes hard on the heels of Coca-Cola agreeing to create a product line using American cane sugar. MAHA is moving companies rapidly toward making options available that are less processed and reliant on artificial ingredients.

Additionally, a couple of weeks ago, I reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently voted to recommend removing thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, from all flu vaccines. Kennedy has now-signed off on this recommendation.

“After more than two decades of delay, this action fulfills a long-overdue promise to protect our most vulnerable populations from unnecessary mercury exposure,” Kennedy said in the HHS announcement Wednesday. “Injecting any amount of mercury into children when safe, mercury-free alternatives exist defies common sense and public health responsibility. Today, we put safety first.”

Other recommendations from ACIP’s June meeting are currently under review, according to HHS.

However, MAHA isn’t limited to the Washington, D.C., area. States are enacting their own versions of the agenda.

In Oklahoma, RFK Jr. joined the signing of a pair of orders that will begin the process of pulling fluoride from the state’s water supply and blocking the purchase of soda using food stamps. In Louisiana, the health secretary was there when the state enacted a bill that forces food companies to put warnings on their products if they contain certain artificial food dyes, preservatives, or dozens of other additives.

These were just two stops on a nationwide tour that has also taken RFK Jr. to several other states—including Arizona, Utah, and West Virginia—that are pushing forward with his ideas, especially on food. In some cases, Kennedy has cheered from afar: “Texas is leading the way,” he posted on X last month, after the Lone Star State passed its own MAHA-style bill similar to Louisiana’s.

And Nebraska just became the first state to secure a federal waiver prohibiting the purchase of soda and energy drinks with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The change, set to take effect on January 1, 2026, impacts approximately 152,000 Nebraskans receiving SNAP, previously known as food stamps.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins signed the first-ever waiver amending the definition of “food” for SNAP purchases in Nebraska, officially barring soda and energy drinks from being bought with program benefits.

SNAP benefits, also known as “food stamps,” are paid to low- and no-income households across the U.S. that would otherwise struggle to afford groceries. In 2024, the program reached some 155,000 people in Nebraska—8 percent of its population.

The decision marks a historic departure in SNAP administration. Several other states, all Republican-led, have submitted similar waivers.

At this point, it is clear that Kennedy’s MAHA movement has used a mix of regulatory action, public pressure, and grassroots campaigning to initiate some significant changes in food policy. It will be interesting to see if there are noticeable impacts on chronic disease or obesity rates over the course of Trump’s term.

Got to admit, when the Kennedy’s want to get something done they don’t mess around.

Whoa! What’s wrong with Froot Loops?!

The Battle Creek plant is awesome to visit. Smell inside from the cooking cereal is intoxicating.

What’s the deal with Fluoride? Someone channeling Jack Ripper? My teeth are very strong still because of the Fluoride added to the water I drank while growing up. I think my precious bodily fluids are fine.

I was HORRIFIED to learn that some artificial food dyes are petroleum-based!4

If it’s good to not use these artificial ingredients, why wait? “I’m sorry, but we have to use up our supply of poison first….”

“WK Kellogg Co. will remove synthetic dyes from its cereals, including Froot Loops and Apple Jacks, by the end of 2027”. Are there any parents stupid enough to feed their children this poision for two more years?

destroycommunism | July 24, 2025 at 4:45 pm

why does the government continually go out of their lane and try and dictate what people do?

as long as their is choice to NOT do something in your own personal life or do something if you choose to,,in your own personal life,,why allow the gov to dictate!?

you want to be strung out>>do it..if you hurt another in that process, you would be subject to due process

if a company adds ingredients you dont like,, and the people have demanded that companies give a full accounting of those ingredients,, and they comply, why any lawsuit should be allowed is counter to maga

it just adds yet another layer of kickback bribes etc to fatten the politicians purse

Johnny Cache in reply to destroycommunism. | July 24, 2025 at 5:33 pm

Trump isn’t a libertarian or a conservative. He’s as close as we’re gonna get any time soon, if ever, but MAGA was never built on either of those POVs.

What if every single food product was made with fentanyl? Or polonium-210? I bet you would be OK with the federal government prohibiting that. And I picked a stupid analogy on purpose because the question isn’t about government interference, it’s the amount you’re comfortable with. Do our local, state and federal governments have no say in anything? I can’t imagine you would agree with that, either. The fact that we even have a government means there’s interference from the get-go. There will never be universal agreement on what’s acceptable, even among like minded people. I agree with your screen name, for example, I’m also fine with this policy.

You assume everyone understands food dyes well enough to understand the risk, but this issue isn’t like some Reason Mag dope smoker who wants to be left alone in his bong room. Breakfast cereal is consumed by millions who have a life and have no freaking clue what ingredients are inside the box, and if you say – tough, that’s on them – you’re asking a significant portion of the population to examine something they don’t have the time, interest or background for. I can trust libertarians to be libertarians. I can’t trust everyone else, which is why libertarianism never works on a grand scale because most people don’t want the responsibility that comes with it.

It the color of cereal was the only thing that made politicians and lobbyists and whoever else rich, vs all the other far worse crap going on in with every other industry, I’d be thrilled.

hmmm lets see…”if every food was made with fentanyl etc”

why would the people who want to make money and NOT GO TO JAIL PUT THAT IN FOOD!!??

again,,IT WAS THE GOV that had these companies put the crap in ( not necessarily all of it..) b/c the government TOOK OVER and was now in charge of the food supplies in schools and needed those preservatives so food would last longer

      “abd have no freakin clue”

      AGREE

The truth about fruit loops is a carefully guarded secret.

Just this month five people who testified before congress, when asked if Joe Biden was a genuine fruit loop, refused to answer invoking their rights under the 5th amendment.

So it’s going to take until the end of 2027 to make the switch? How come so long? Existing supplier contracts perhaps? I say tough! Get it done by years end, 2025, if you want your business life to continue smoothly…..

Cream of rice with peanut butter stirred in works okay.

What’s actually disturbing is that States need a waiver to block soda/sugar water and such from SNAP. Instead that should be the default.

IMO we should be demanding use of neighborhood schools to feed kids healthy meals. Give every child a breakfast, lunch and a brown bag take home with a sandwich, a piece of fruit and a yogurt. Monday -Friday with breakfast only and two brown bags on Sat/Sun. All year round. Now every child K-12 has access to healthy food. No need for additional food aid for these children.

Then use the schools as distribution centers on weekends to hand out in kind food basket (no cash) to replace EBT and SNAP. Do that and folks will stop abusing the system and find a job to buy the food they want v eating ‘govt cheese’.

destroycommunism in reply to CommoChief. | July 24, 2025 at 7:24 pm

gov run schools should be in charge of feeding “OUR” kids??

oh no that supports the unionist leftist maggots when they say

    THEY’RE OUR KIDS

which then further gives lefty the mentality to NOT tell the real parents things like,,,your kid says he is a girl etc

to stop abusing the system aka the taxpayer

    THEY MUST BE GIVEN NOTHING

then when the ones who say they are the good people ( lefty) DIRECTLY pays for food and housing etc and THEY ARE THE ONES GETTING RIPPED OFF….the government ,,with NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST, can prosecute,,instead of promoting like they do those who do wrong

CommoChief in reply to destroycommunism. | July 24, 2025 at 9:26 pm

My proposal ends the fraud. Period. Go to school get your healthy meals. No tax dollars sent in cash transfers to be wasted by spendthrift Parents on welfare. These meals would be far healthier than what they eat now. Do this + bring back mandatory PE and maybe we can make a dent in obesity and diabetes rates…which not for nothing are costing taxpayers a damn fortune in healthcare costs.

Same for all food assistance programs. They get a dang box of healthy food curated by dietitians. Don’t want the box? No problem don’t take it, any excess can be handed over to local shelters… but no EBT cards.

Taxpayers have already paid for the building and the kitchens why not maximize their utility? Heck bring in folks to teach basic crap on the weekends to folks picking up a weekly food box. Teach food prep, how to store food properly, handle it properly. How to use the stuff in the box to make different meals. Hell teach budgeting and how to balance a check book. I suspect many of these folks would benefit from it. Make it mandatory to get the box.

All you are doing is sky screaming in opposition but not offering realistic solutions. No way you can wave a wand and end all Federal Welfare programs. You ain’t gonna convince a 2/3 majority of Congress or a majority of the voting public to support immediately implementing ‘Galt’s Gulch’ as the way forward. Gotta work with the possible, get a 1/4 loaf today, come back for more slices tomorrow and keep it up. IOW adopt the d/prog playbook to roll back as much Cray Cray Commie crap we’ve adopted as possible today then keep after it year after year removing as many layers as possible but never settling for any less than what is attainable at the moment. Relentless, persistent and unyielding is the only way to do it and using the programs themselves to initiate changes is just a common sense application of leverage to accomplish it. Just like the Trump Admin restoring work requirements to be eligible for Medicaid.

You left out one thing that is not food related but is health releated. Take away all cell phones at the beginning of school and then give them back when school is out. Make the fat kids go to PE and actually exercise.

CommoChief in reply to inspectorudy. | July 25, 2025 at 10:39 am

Bro we have vast welfare programs now. Acknowledging the current reality isn’t an endorsement of it.

What’s your realistic plan to achieve the political consensus change the current system to either eliminate it or reform it?

Yelling Capitalism isn’t a substitute for a concrete plan to make real change. Unfortunately the voters and the politicians are mostly ‘ok’ with the vast welfare system (I ain’t but I don’t have the individual power to alter it) if they were not then the voters would demand the politicians make changes and again, unfortunately, not enough voters sent enough candidates who support changes or ending welfare to DC.

I am finished with your bad faith.

No amount of sky screaming ‘capitalism’ is gonna alter the fact that our current system isn’t capitalism. Go read some Marx and other commie propaganda and see for yourself just how many commie/socialist things we’ve adopted into our Nation’s economy.

define healthy food please. none of it is.

CommoChief in reply to irish. | July 25, 2025 at 8:27 am

Not deep fried, not coated in sugar, not too many carbs, less sodium, less preservatives. Fresh as possible. An apple v canned fruit encapsulates this idea. One is off the tree, transported and served while the canned fruit is coated in syrup with preservatives. Brown rice v white rice. Whole wheat breads baked in house v store loaves. The manner of preparation and length of storage has a big impact.

Some foods are less healthy some are more healthy. I’d suggest that if we focus on the health outcomes from the foods consumed across large population groups we definitely see a difference between the groups who consume less fat, less fried food, eat in moderation, consume ‘fresher’ food and groups that don’t. Japanese in Japan v Japanese in the USA is one example of how changes in diet/exercise habits make a huge difference even in population groups with similar genetics.

I don’t know why you’d quibble on this point. If you think eating a diet of fresh, broiled fish with fresh leafy greens, light carbs, fresh fruits and low carb vegetables, yogurt v a diet of fried meats, biscuits & gravy, mac & cheese, potatoes with gravy and a fried pie doesn’t impact your health outcomes from the differences in diet….you’d be very wrong.

Dolce Far Niente in reply to CommoChief. | July 25, 2025 at 9:54 am

Actually, it is clearly not just the food which makes us fat and sick, but lack of physical activity.

Our forefathers and mothers ate a diet much closer to that of your “unhealthy” example than your low carb preference, but obesity rates were very low and our modern ills were uncommon.

It is our completely sedentary lifestyles, even in childhood, which differs. most markedly from that of previous generations.

ttucker99 in reply to Dolce Far Niente. | July 25, 2025 at 10:32 am

This is absolutely correct. I have type2 diabetes. Went as an assistant scoutmaster with my son to camp in Colorado. I had to walk around to the various teaching spots, swimming pool, rifle range, archery, nature trails, thru the day to make sure the kids were where they were supposed to be. The camp meals are very carb heavy, mashed potatoes and corn in the same meal for example. I only took my medicine 2 of the 6 days we were there and my blood sugar never went over 95. All I had to do was walk 8 to10 miles a day and my problem is gone. That is a good 4 hrs of walking and at home with work and everything I just do not have that kind of time but up there my whole reason for being there was to walk around and monitor things.

CommoChief in reply to Dolce Far Niente. | July 25, 2025 at 10:52 am

Sure a calorie deficit will result in weight loss . When folks were predominantly doing heavy labor such as pre industrial agriculture or mining or cutting timber with axes they were burning massive calories and carbs were far cheaper than meat, non seasonal fruit/veg or fresh fish.

Even today Soldiers experience this. In every deployment to the sandbox I would drop 20ish lbs. Usually ending up at about 165-170. I am not quite 6’1 with an athletic build and high metabolism and normal weight with gym muscles was 190. Not at all fat or out of shape, quite the opposite. Even with massive intake.of.calories we burned so many calories running patrols, wearing the kit, from the heat and physical exertion we couldn’t help but drop weight.

The other issue is developing healthy habits and basic knowledge of what is ‘good’ v ‘bad’ and ‘healthy’ v ‘unhealthy’ foods. No matter how many calories you burn if your diet is high in fat/sugar it ain’t good for your health long term.

We don’t even need those examples. Look at the many side by side comparison photos of folks on the beach today v in the ’80s or especially the ’60s. No fat bodies in sight even a a few decades ago v today. Food choices play a big part in that.

Cool. Let me know when you’ve successfully created a viable political majority to achieve the reduction in size and scope of gov’t and I’ll be happy to join.

Until that day though we gotta acknowledge that your preferences don’t reflect current reality. There’s a vast welfare system. IMO we should leverage the system to make it function more effectively with better outcomes and at less cost overall while still working in parallel to build a consensus to end it.

You would seem to prefer shouting slogans that accomplish jack squat to reduce size and scope of govt and reduce overall taxpayer burden. My proposal would accomplish all those things.
