Schumer Saying He’ll Vote Yes on CR to Keep Government Open
Schumer knows the Democrats will lose even more if they allow the government to shut down.
The Senate Republicans need more than eight Democrats to vote for the continuing resolution (CR).
Well…the Democrats are about to cave because Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he would vote for it.
But Schumer claimed the vote would give President Donald Trump even more power.
Yeah, Schumer. We all know you’re doing it because you guys would get the blame for a shutdown:
And it’s not really a decision, it’s a Hobson’s choice. Either proceed with the bill before us or risk Donald Trump throwing America into the chaos of a shutdown.
This, in my view, is no choice at all. While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse for sure.
The Republican bill is a terrible option. It is not a clean CR. It is deeply partisan. It doesn’t address far too many of this country’s needs, but I believe allowing Donald Trump to take even more, even much more power via a government shutdown, is a far worse option.
And before I explain why, let me be clear about one thing. No one on my side of the aisle wants the government shut down. Members who support this CR do not want a government shutdown. Members who oppose this CR do not want a government shutdown.

The CR will keep the government funded until September 30. It is a terrible bill that adds more spending.
Democrats will likely add amendments to the bill to bring in more votes and give them an excuse to vote for the CR.
I bet those who vote for it will also come from Democrats who face a tough reelection in 2026.
The vote won’t help Democrats, though, because every House Democrat voted against it.

And…………..it’s gone.
I’m surprised it was that fast. It seems like yesterday Schumer was in a meeting and held a press conference declaring the Dems were united in opposing the CR. I love the “chaos of Trump” over the shutdown. Where were his crocodile tears when Obama shut down the government and roped off WW2 memorials?
The d/prog in the Senate passing the CR is their best move. This CR to fund the Gov’t through end of FY25 is an extension of the FY24 budget. IOW the d/prog are voting to keep Biden’s Budget, his policy priorities on spending authorizations and Biden’s spending appropriations in place through the end of FY25.
The alternative would result in not just a shutdown but one where the Senate d/prog would make the blame. More importantly it would put DOGE in the driver’s seat. The Gov’t would still keep ‘essential’ personnel and ‘essential’ operations going during the ‘shutdown’. That begs the question ‘why the heck are we paying non essential personnel to perform non essential tasks’? Plus OPM would be the entity making decisions on what is ‘essential’. Once sent home as non essential it is far easier to fire them from a PR standpoint at minimum.
In sum the d/prog almost have to vote to pass the CR. It prevents OPM and DOGE from labeling and distinguishing essential v non essential personnel and tasks while also keeping the Biden budget in place till Sept. Why would the d/prog blow that up? Easy for d/prog in HoR to criticize b/c it costs them nothing but Red/Purple State d/prog Senators could get blamed for a shutdown then held accountable at the polls.
Chicken Chuck got caught, couldn’t get out, choked, and cowardly caved…
He had a senior moment.
I’m enjoying the 4D chess the Republicans played with this bill. For once, they put the Senate Dems into a tricky spot. Chucky is not happy and that’s how we like it.
Old and Busted:
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D): We shutting down the government to block federal layoffs
New Hotness:
Dem Rep. Suozzi: GOP Wants Shutdown to Help DOGE, I Voted Against CR Because It Empowers DOGE
Chuck U painted himself into the corner, and I sure hope he doesn’t paint the town when the voters finally give him the brush.
I’m getting the feeling Chuck isn’t going to be in charge of the Senate Dems for much longer. He will go the way of Pelosi before the summer is out I bet.
NY voters? No amount of crime, high taxes and surging power bills seems to keep them from voting stupid. Everyone enjoy Tompkins County 30% raise in ‘assessments’ across the board? I got mine 33% the day I sold my house to leave the state, TO A CORNELL PROFESSOR LOL.
Ha Ha !
(insert Nelson Muntz laugh here)
I hope that was really painful for him
Partial shutdown would see all “non-essential” federal employees sent home (without pay, but they get it back later – basically, they get a paid vacation).
What Schumer is seeing, correctly, is that OMB, USDS (aka DOGE), Trump and all hus Cabinet officials would then designate a large prtion of these positions as non-existent.
The whole exercise would highlight cast numbers of useless federal employees whose jobs could simply be eliminated.
I don’t think that the dems can add amendments and get the bill passed. If the House bill is modified in any way it would go back to the house for another vote. Problem is, that on March 11, the House went into a district work period until March 24. No way they can get the House members back in DC for some Friday night vote, The eliminated the vote by proxy that was used during covid.
Then a hour or so later they posted that there was going to be a meeting Friday morning at 9 am. We’ll have to wait and see what happens Friday morning.
at 9:02 am the House announced that it was adjourned until noon on March 18. The dems can’t change or amend the bill and still prevent a Friday night shutdown.
On a side note the dems lost a second House member this week due to the passing of a rep from Texas and New Mexico, As of today there are only 431 House Reps serving with four seats that need to be filled. This gives Johnson a little bit larger margin.
correction, the rep was from Arizona not New Mexico
It may have finally dawned on the Dems that a shutdown would mean all “non essential” government employees and departments would be shutdown which would give Trump and Musk a target rich environment to slash and burn leaving the Dems in the position of arguing that non essential employees shouldn’t be terminated.
It is always good to see d/prog and legacy media flouncing and flustered. That said keep in mind what is going on here. This is a CR, A continuing resolution for the budget. This is NOT a budget based on MAGA/MAHA principles to achieve policy changes on how much and what to fund in the current FY 25 budget. It doesn’t reduce spending.
This just continues the spending levels for the Biden/Schumer political priorities from the FY 24 budget. It slightly increases the spending adding about $20 billion. Now Congress gonna have to figure out if they have the stones to make cuts to actual spending, not just lower rate of future spending but real cuts from current level in the FY 26 budget. I suspect many voters, including MAGA/MAHA voters won’t like true cuts.
Make cuts to actual spending, not future spending at a lower rate….no they don’t have the stones and won’t have the stones. No Congressman will vote to cut spending in his district, only cuts elsewhere will do. Many programs and purchases by the Government are spread out to include R districts to prevent this very thing.
Well, GoP Rep.Thomas Massie voted NO on the CR b/c he wanted to see a true budget, following regular order that cuts current spending. He has done this throughout his career seeking to bring attention to the looming catastrophe of our $37 Trillion Federal Debt.
As you are probably aware he got all sorts of heat for his refusal to allow the Biden/Schumer budget to continue the rest of the Fiscal Year. You are correct that the go along/get along crowd in DC will use all sorts of means to keep their grift going. They will absolutely spread the grift among CD to gain support with a ‘carrot’ and have no problem using the threat of a primary challenge as a stick. The ‘Rich Men North of.Richmond’ will not simply go quietly without a fight.
Trump and Musk are to “blame” for Schumer’s having to vote for the CR, or so Schumer claims. The former emperor is naked and this is fig leaf.
WINNING!
Technically, the Republicans don’t need eight more Democrats to vote for the CR. They need enough Democrat votes to invoke cloture and allow a vote on the substance of the CR. So, get seven or eight Democrats — and perhaps even Rand Paul — to vote for cloture, then let the Republicans see whether they can pass the CR on a majority vote.
Schumer is shrewd enough to know that shutting down the govt. would play right into the hands of Trump and DOGE. It’s hard to complain about layoffs and budget cuts if you’re willing to shut the entire thing down. And it would be a major rug-pull for all those two-bit district court judge demagogues trying to run the country from the bench.
The math has changed.
Before, there were enough prima donna Republicans to keep a cash-thin House bill from passing, so the needle flipped to “Let the Dems get everything they want and at least half the Republicans will vote for it.”
Now, the House has more fiscal determination, enough to keep the whole (except for one) together and get a reasonably priced bill through.
The Dems *used* to know they could blame the Republicans and the media would run 100% with it. Holding together, making sure to get a reasonable CR without a thousand pounds of pork passed. If the Dems in the Senate tried to block it, they know they’ll get blamed as they should. #SchumerShutdown was already trending on Twitter.
