NYC: United HealthCare CEO Shot Dead in Apparent Targeted Attack
A masked gunman shot Thompson outside of a Midtown hotel.
According to reports, a masked gunman shot and killed United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, in Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just before 7 a.m. near a hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, sources said. Video posted to Citizen showed police tape on the Midtown street as police arrived at the scene.
He was rushed to an area hospital and later died. The shooting is being investigated as a possibly targeted hit, sources said.
Thompson became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021 after joining UnitedHealth Group in 2004. Before being named CEO, he lead government programs for UnitedHealthcare, including Medicare.
UnitedHealthGroup started its annual Investor Conference at 8 a.m. Wednesday, which was scheduled to run until 11 a.m. An official ended the conference early around 9:09 a.m.
“We’re dealing with a very serious… situation,” he said. “We’re going to have to bring to a close the event today… I apologize for bringing things to a close but I hope you’ll understand.”

I will assume that every present and former United Healthcare subscriber is a suspect.
No shortage of suspects, that’s for sure.
Musk, Ackman, Carlson and the rest should be reviewing their protection schemes.
Not necessarily.
I recently signed up to them, no complaints so far.
My elder sis (with serious health issues) was a member for decades, she recommended them to me.
I bet though the authorities will be looking at relatives of members who had an acrimonious relationship.
You’re lucky then. My employer used them for years and just recently switched. United Health didn’t cover anything, to include medications that my wife’s doctor prescribed because the insurance believed they better knew what she needed.
People should be wary of trading in traditional Medicare for a Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) plan widely advertised on TV. You may get a few extra benefits, which could come at the cost of possibly restricted treatment when you need it the most.
Medicare Advantage plans are sometimes free and usually very low cost. It’s because you are the product being consumed.
I have United healthcare and in the last two years two prescriptions I’ve been on one for 17 years is now not on the formulary. Who the heck decides these formularies? Another one was on the formulary but now it’s off and I read that the insurance companies are changing the medication’s on the formularies in order to keep people to the $2000 cap because the $2000 cap is only for medication‘s on the formulary. They get you coming and going. The sincerest of condolences to the family for a tragic, tragic event and pathetically sadly, it takes this kind of event to raise awareness for a despicable problem on the part of insurance companies? It’s not this one individual’s fault for the culture. Pray that the tragedy leads to some incremental improvement in healthcare and what an awful awful thing just what an awful thing.
United is by far the worst insurance company.
They seem to routinely deny about 30% of claims.
Most egregious is denying chest x rays patients with a diagnosis os “suspected lung cancer”
Then the doctor has to call and appeal the denial on a peer to peer.
( for no pay)
It takes a lot of time away from patient care.
Wow. While it may not be a household name, it’s one of the biggest companies in the world, Top-20 for certain. I think it’s headquartered in the Midwest, maybe WI or MN. Weird to wait until someone travels to New York City to pop him in broad daylight in the US city that has the most CCTV than any in the US. Corporate executive security is going to get a whole lot more robust…and expensive.
Targeted hit. The conspiracy mind boggles.
CEO Of UnitedHealthcare Killed In Alleged Targeted Attack In Manhattan, Suspect At Large
… is “Large” anywhere near “Random” (where they hold all of the drawings)
My eyes went 0.0 when I read the headline. I have United for our insurance and we’re getting screwed next year. We’re going into high deductible territory now, which is absolute bullshit.
If this turns out to be a subscriber, I would completely get it.
“What, you’re denying coverage for my Viagra?”
Hope they don’t bill his family for the ambulance response. That wouldn’t be humane…
A secret Russian dossier identifies Adam Schiff as the shooter.
That’s right. Schiff also fails to pay his taxes and he likes to get golden showers from Russian hookers. Don’t quote me on that, but this information comes from a very reliable source.
How dare you make such an accusation against him. Schiff, I will have you know, is a patriot, and would never patronize a Russian hooker. All his hookers are certified Ukrainian; he makes them show him their passports.
But they get phony passports from Matt Gaetz.
This is absolutely appalling. America’s descent into banana republic land continues at breakneck speed. This happens in third world hell holes all the time. And no one is ever caught. I hope they catch him fast. With any luck he is shot resisting arrest. As a sidebar, I’ve noticed, more and more, that people are on the fritz in our fair land. They have forgotten how to drive, how to behave in public, how to think logically, i.e., I’m concerned that too many idiots made it to the D. Penny jury in Gotham.
He will have to be. Otherwise he could be questioned. Can’t have that.
Very tragic. Did he recently cook any meals for the Obamas?
I have a cheapo security camera off of Amazon that has a clearer picture than that thing did
I have often wondered how we could have had satellites that can read a newspaper from outer space, but “security camera” pictures are always crap.
Maybe it was just a random viewer of TV geezer-channels, tired to the snapping point by the three-minute “Medicare advantage” ads every commercial break every day in November and December.
Re: “Before being named CEO, he lead government programs for UnitedHealthcare, including Medicare.”
“Lead” should be “led”, a past tense verb. Don’t confuse the soft metal “lead” with the verb “led”.
Our family plan (my wife and I) costs $29,000/year. We have a fairly large deductible. We’ve had a lot of fights, over the years, with them over necessary treatments and Rx.
My wife said she’d never turn this guy in.
I said I’d turn him in, but I’d also give him a medal and send him monthly care packages to him while he’s in prison.
The ‘professional’ shooter wore his mask around his mouth but not his eyes.
Fear of Covid?
Some people do use their mouths to aim, but it’s better just to relax.
However, the eyes are pretty important.
My opinion: a professional hit job having nothing to do with an irate insured. The assassin had everything well planned. Immediate escape on foot to some kind of bike (not a Lyft scooter as first claimed) and got lost in Central Park. Certainly looks like he got away. The murder weapon: B&T Station SIX pistol. An integrally suppressed 9mm pistol inspired by WWII-era Welrod. Compact for a suppressed firearm and non obvious. Normally suppressors are bulky. In short: the perfect assassination gun. One a professional would use.
I doubt that he will get caught. More likely with such a public murder, some patsy will get framed to turn off the heat on law enforcement. This is what you get in the throughly corrupt city of New York. The inscription on the bullets is meant to distract, It means nothing.
We in the NFA (National Firearms Act) community have been having a field day with this, due mostly to it being filmed on a potato. The one consistent view is that “mistakes were made” and we are well divided on whether they were rank amateur mistakes or mistakes that were inserted to make it seem less like a professional hit and more like a disgruntled goober. The shooter left 3 expended casings and 3 intact cartridges on the ground, which indicates 3 failed ejections leading to stovepipe (and clearing) of the next round. That is evidence of a failed testing of the platform ahead of time, which is the sign of a naive shooter. A drawback of most suppressed handguns is that they operate close to the point of failure most of the time. If the shooter was from South Florida and tested his weapon at an ambiant temp of 90 degrees, it would not perform the same in NYC at 30-40 degrees since combustion is a temperature sensitive chemical reaction. A professional would know this and compensate accordingly. It was also reported that the first shot hit the victims leg, so not a sign of a pro. The (2) fatal shots were delivered to the torso, and this person could have been wearing a vest under their jacket, as I do when I have business in downtown Portland (mostly street ferals with hunting knives as the threat).
The one certain fact from this is that UHC security totally dropped the ball on this, almost as much as the SS in Butler, PA. This CEO was well known and disliked, giving a well publicized talk at a public location. He should have had a security team drop him off at a protected location (like the service garage?) where he was never exposed on the street. And until in the controlled building, he should have been wearing a vest, which is easily swapped out and carried in a discreet bag, by one of his security team. I am pretty sure that A LOT of CEO and top execs are in the uparmoring stage right now.
