Jewish Student at Reed College Struck in the Head by Rock Thrown Through Her Dorm Room Window

“This is a clear act of antisemitism directed at a student on our campus, and that is unacceptable and unlawful behavior”

Reed College is in Portland, Oregon, and has a reputation for being a hotbed of leftism.

Willamette Week reports:

Jewish Student at Reed College Struck by Rock a Day After Vandalism of Religious Symbol

A Jewish student at Reed College was struck in the head by a rock thrown through the student’s dorm room window on the night of Monday, May 6, according to an email sent to staff and the student body by Reed administration.

The incident came one day after the same student’s mezuzah, a scroll with Torah verses that many Jews affix to their doors, was removed and destroyed, Reed administrators said in the email. That incident occurred on Sunday, May 5. Holocaust Remembrance Day started that day at sundown.

“This is a clear act of antisemitism directed at a student on our campus, and that is unacceptable and unlawful behavior,” Phyllis Esposito, vice president and dean for institutional diversity, and Karnell McConnell-Black, vice president for student life, wrote. “Every Reed student, regardless of their faith, has the right to express their faith tradition through the symbols they display, clothes they wear, and practices they keep.”

The incident comes as U.S. college campuses have been riven by protests against Israel’s assault on Gaza, which followed the Oct. 7 attack on Israelis by Hamas.

The student who was assaulted with the rock, a woman, heard anti-Israel protesters outside her window on the night of May 5, says Bob Horenstein, director of community relations at the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, who has discussed the matter with the student.

Students for Justice in Palestine held a “noise parade” on campus that evening, Horenstein says. Reed College spokeswoman Sheena McFarland confirmed that the event took place.

The student recorded the protest on her phone, he said. Afterward, she heard protesters banging on doors in her dorm. Later that evening, she discovered that the plastic mezuzah on her door had been smashed and the scroll inside torn up, Horenstein says.

I still think a lot of this has been boiling below the surface for years if not decades. It took 10/7 and paid trouble makers to bring it all to the surface.

There’s an old saying among Jews: the talk of the child on the street is the talk of the parents at home.

the facts dont change

According to New York City Police Department statistics, Jewish hate crimes on the rise. Last year at this time, there were 86 incidents, compared to 131 this year.

Restler says this attack has now put the Jewish community, already at unease, on even higher alert.

“Police say it’s too hard to protect them.”
And the people who pay those police have successfully destroyed the students’ right to protect themselves.

I’ll put on my hardhat to prevent injury from the rain if down ticks, so, here goes:

The supreme Court has, among other things, stated that the police were under no obligation to defend the individual. The supreme Court has also said they could lie through their teeth. The police stand around and do nothing while certain people are attacked. The police arrest people defending themselves. So, maybe the demonstrators are right: it’s time to defund the police. After all, what do they really do?

I already got rained on tonite, so no loss if I join you. It’s the wrong conversation across the board.

Not “defund” the police, but police reform. Maybe defunding gets the reform we want. Maybe not.

It should be *policing* reform. The tool follows from its use. What policing do we want? Build police to do that.

What about peace officers while I’m at it — remember those? Having people around to hold space for the “peaceful enjoyment” of our little lives is different from “policing.”

Going the other direction, what’s with law enforcement, enforcing laws, generating noise n conflict? Social engineering at the point of a gun gets you calls to “defund the police.”

I recall the peace officer days. At most they had night-sticks and a S&W Police Special.

Today. it is semi-auto handguns, extra mags, a taser, some have flash-bangs right there on their vest, a walkie-talkie squawking away. Most cops won’t turn the damned thing down to converse with you.

This is combined with their white, black, and blue “American” flag patches with the blue line on them. Us vs the entire populace, who are all guilty of something, and so need to be questioned in a way that trips them up or paints them into a corner of “you lied to a police officer!”.

That last part means I won’t even give them the time of day. My watch against his, or him just saying I lied.

          Screw ’em.

And, let’s not even bring up the number of 5ft 10in officers coming in at 300 lbs net.

I already had this conversation with a “Police PAC” cold-caller tonight. Assuming he was even genuine. Any time I wonder how cynical it’s possible to get, I surprise myself.

There is no such thing as “the blue.” It is not an independent entity. If your local government supports you, your police will support you. If it oppresses you, your police will oppress you. By
default, expect to be treated by police as you would be treated by paid mercenaries, and most of the time this expectation will serve you well.

Henry, I am at the point that if any poh-leeses told me that the sky is blue, I’d walk over to a window and look out to confirm it. I don’t care if it is local, the sheriff, the highway patrol / state police, fibbies, or any other alphabet.

The default position I hold is: they are lying.

A student was struck in the head by a rock thrown through a dorm window. Should we not properly refer to that instrument as an “assault rock” and properly refer to the act as an assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder, with arrests for the entire group for aiding and assisting in the assault? This has escalated far beyond “protests” and “vandalism”.

        BierceAmbrose in reply to another_ed. | May 17, 2024 at 10:03 pm

But does that rock have a high-capacity clipazine with a folding thing that goes up? Otherwise it’s not one of those eeee-vil assault rocks.

Also, we need background checks and a waiting period for (serialized) rock acquisition.

Last, no prosecuting the human. It wasn’t the thrower, it was the evil, presumably black rock that brained that student. They have agency, don’t you know.

“Students for Justice in Palestine held a “noise parade” on campus that evening”

At last — they have found a career they are suited for.

Just sue the school for failure to provide a safe space.

That’s what it’s all about, right? Safe spaces?
