Media Hoax: No, Israel Did Not Dig ‘Mass Grave’ At Gaza’s Nasser Hospital

Another day, another Hamas hoax amplified by Democrats and the mainstream media.

This time around, the story is about a mass grave at Gaza’s Nasser Hospital that was allegedly only recently discovered, according to workers for the Hamas-run Gaza Civil Defense.

CNN, of course, was among the numerous media outlets to breathlessly report on the story, which strongly insinuated the IDF dug the graves and, in the process, committed war crimes. Make sure to take note of the framing:

The United Nations has called for an “independent, effective and transparent investigation” into the discovery of mass graves at two Gaza hospitals that were besieged and raided by Israeli troops this year.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in a statement he was “horrified” by the scenes reported from both the Nasser and Al Shifa medical complexes in the besieged enclave.

[…]

A mass grave with 324 bodies was uncovered this week at the Nasser Medical Complex in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis by Gaza Civil Defense workers following the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area.

Col. Yamen Abu Suleiman, Director of Civil Defense in Khan Younis, alleged that some of the bodies had been found with hands and feet tied, “and there were signs of field executions. We do not know if they were buried alive or executed. Most of the bodies are decomposed.”

Anti-Israel CNN International anchor Christiane Amanpour also hyped the story:

Hamas Caucus leader Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) pounced and seized, and demanded to know where the media coverage was, apparently ignoring the fact that national news outlets had already picked up the ball and run with it:

The Biden White House has also said they want “answers”:

“We want answers,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters. “We want to see this thoroughly and transparently investigated.”A spokesperson for the US State Department also said Washington was continuing to press Israel for more information.

As with most things claimed by a Hamas-run organization, the problem here is that the mass grave was actually dug in January 2024 – but not by the IDF:

Analyses by Sky News and independent analysts of satellite imagery and footage published online found that claims spread by Hamas and Arabic media that the IDF had dug mass graves at the Nasser hospital in Gaza were false as the graves were made before the IDF entered the complex.

Hamas, Al-Jazeera, and several news agencies claimed in recent days that the IDF had dug mass graves in order to “hide” the bodies of Palestinians after entering the Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis.

Here’s more from the Times of Israel:

The IDF, in its response, said that during its operation in the area of Nasser Hospital in recent months, troops examined corpses that had been buried by Palestinians on the medical center’s grounds, “as part of an effort to locate hostages.”The military said it operated in a “targeted manner,” only where it had intelligence that Israeli hostages may have been buried.

GeoConfirmed also has a lengthy thread that includes receipts that back up Shoshani’s statement. Make sure to click on the tweets to expand them for more detailed explanations:

NBC News also reported on the mass grave digging at the time:

A good rule of thumb on stories like these is that if Hamas is alleging it and the left-wing media is running with it, there is a high probability that it is fake news:

Wash, rinse, repeat.
