Police Identify Skeleton of Man Found in Building Near UC-Berkeley

“Based on the condition of the bones analyzed by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office, McCreary’s death is a homicide.”

This is an update to a story from back in January. It was apparently a homicide.

FOX News reports:

Skeleton found near UC Berkeley ‘had no connection’ to university: police

A skeleton found in an unoccupied building near UC Berkeley was identified as the body of Steven Lawrence McCreary, and his death was ruled a homicide.

But McCreary, who would’ve been 50 today, didn’t have any known affiliations with the California university or a home in the area, police said, making his death that much more puzzling.

McCreary was a Texas native last seen alive in 2009, UC Berkeley Police said.

He was known to travel around the country, sometimes by train or hitchhiking, according to police, who said he spent some time in the San Francisco Bay Area.

That’s the closest link law enforcement has to the unoccupied building at a residential hall complex and event space where McCreary’s remains were found in January.

The building is about a mile from UC Berkeley’s main Bay Area campus.

But how he died and ended up in an empty campus building is perplexing as it is scary.

“Forensic and other evidence indicates the death occurred many years ago,” UC Berkeley said in a statement. “Based on the condition of the bones analyzed by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office, McCreary’s death is a homicide.”

As long as no suspiciously knotted rope loops were found anywhere in the vicinity of his remains, I guess it’s safe to close the investigation. No hate crime to see here, folks.

There is much more to the story that is published here. The body was actually discovered a couple years previous, but for some unknown reason the UC Berkeley supervisor who was notified of the bones did not notify law enforcement at that time. Fast forward to January, when contractors notifed law enforcement directly, and that is when the investigation started. Read the real story below.

Thanks for providing this. The UC Berkeley facilities supervisor has been let go. Damage control by UCB, one expects. The supervisor was not connected to the crime, as per police. One wonders who and what this skeletal victim is connected to.

Must be the skeleton of a guy who was waiting for Berkeley to offer an actual, real education

This reminds me of the time in the 1980s, at Texas A&M University, when they found a skeleton during a dormitory renovation. After much research it was determined that they finally found the 1932 Hide and Seek Champion. [end Aggie Joke]
