A New Chapter in Trump’s Legal Drama, Trial Date is Set

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has tentatively scheduled the trial of former President Donald Trump for August 14th.

In a recent development, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has tentatively scheduled the trial of former President Donald Trump for August 14th. The charges leveled against him include obstruction and the mishandling of classified documents.

The trial is set to take place at the Fort Pierce, Florida courthouse, a change from the initial location in Miami where Trump’s arraignment occurred. The date, however, is flexible and may shift due to ongoing negotiations between Trump’s legal team, the Justice Department, and Judge Cannon.

While the prosecution has signaled they would need three weeks to present their evidence, Judge Cannon has only set aside two weeks for the trial.

The charges against Trump are serious, with prosecutors alleging he refused to return hundreds of classified documents, ranging from U.S. nuclear secrets to defense capabilities. The indictment includes 37 criminal counts related to his handling of these materials. However, Trump has denied all allegations, stating that his actions were not out of malice or negligence.

In an interview with Bret Baier, Trump explained:

Trump has denied all wrongdoing in the documents case and pushed back on the allegations in an interview with Fox News‘ Bret Baier on Monday night. He said he took the documents because he was rushing during his move from the White House and wanted to go through his personal items.

“So, like every other president, I take things out. And in my case, I took it out pretty much in a hurry, but people packed it up and we left and I had clothing in there. I had all sorts of personal items,”

If we don’t have 2 tier system it would take 6 years and in the end, it would be a slap on the wrist. See Hunter.

    ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to 2smartforlibs. | June 20, 2023 at 3:12 pm

Poor equivalence. Hunter committed clear and obvious crimes for which others are routinely thrown in jail and for which evidence is all over the place – everywhere. Trump committed no crimes.

The two tiers is just that Hillary wasn’t charged when she did exactly the same thing.

This is a law that is routinely enforced when the DOJ asks for the documents back and isn’t given them back.

People sat in prison during the Trump presidency convicted on this very law without a pardon, and Trump essentially confessed on Brett Baier (and no a president can’t reclassify agency records as presidential records, a nd no Clinton’s interviews with a historian wasn’t classified information and he did not retroactively change it’s classification, and unlike documents about national security that are highly classified a personal interview with a historian is personal records).

If you like Trump you should be mad at him for doing this he invited prosecution (because this is a routinely enforced law even though not enforced on Hillary Clinton).

Once again you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Hillary didn’t do the exact same thing. She couldn’t. She was never president.

Hillary committed crimes by illegally taking classified information.

      Trump didn’t.

Senator and Vice President Biden committed crimes by illegally taking classified information.

      Trump didn’t.

Trump was President and Commander in Chief of the military.

      He had the absolute clearance.

      Hillary and Senator/VP Biden didn’t.

Biden has acquired such authority NOW, but he didn’t have that authority when he was stealing classified information.

“While the prosecution has signaled they would need three weeks to present their evidence, Judge Cannon has only set aside two weeks for the trial. ”

If this trial were being held in DC, that would be a warning sign that the judge was planning on dismissing defense objections wholesale (as we are seeing in far too many DC trials in the last few years)

As this is a judge who has actually shown interest in being a neutral arbitrator of justice, I’ll maintain cautious optimism in an actual fair trial and acquittal on all charges.

It blows my mind that the trial can be pinned down to a precise date while Jan 6 participants rot in a jail cell awaiting their day in court.

Because they’re getting railed politically right now, and they think that if they just rush through and get their precious conviction that suddenly political opinion will turn.

All it’s doing is further convincing people that this is a joke. The TRIAL is in August? A mere 2 months for discovery and trial prep? That’s a joke.

Danny in reply to Olinser. | June 21, 2023 at 8:30 am

You do realize the trial is in Southern Florida right?

Anyone who thinks Southern Florida is some kind of blue stronghold is utterly insane.

It blows my mind that there were Jan 6 defendants who pled out.

“The charges against Trump are serious,”

You misspelled ‘spurious’.

‘Frivolous” ‘ridiculous’

They are political persecution and naught else.

Indicted made known to Trump and public on June 8,

Trial on August 14.

To use a football reference, this seems a quick huddle.

While the prosecution has signaled they would need three weeks to present their evidence, Judge Cannon has only set aside two weeks for the trial.

In other words, the Judge just wants to get this farce over with and Trump imprisoned as fast as she can possibly achieve to make sure he won’t be nominated as candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

    She’s a Trump appointee.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to txvet2. | June 20, 2023 at 8:59 pm

And your point is what, exactly? Trump doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to his appointees. Think Sessions. Think Barr. You really think now that democrats have Trump exactly where they want him that they are going to allow U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon to let him get away? Hardly. Like it or not the pressure will be on her to get the trial over with and Trump in prison as quickly as possible. Hence the trial date. Hence the short amount of time allocated to the trial.

It’ll all be a kangaroo court of course, but that’s the idea of all of this. Get Trump no matter the cost to the country’s justice system.

My point is, she’s a Trump appointee.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to txvet2. | June 21, 2023 at 8:23 am

My point is, that it doesn’t matter if she’s a Trump appointee or not. The trial is going to happen, Trump will be found guilty, and he will be imprisoned well before any republican primaries occur. The democrats will see to that.

    The judge is Trump appointed

The_Mew_Cat in reply to Lucifer Morningstar. | June 21, 2023 at 12:15 pm

Maybe she expects to throw out some of the charges so they won’t need 3 weeks.

Expecting a Kangaroo Court whenever it happens, stacked up with ridiculous rules and hoops to jump through.

    txvet2 in reply to Skip. | June 20, 2023 at 8:40 pm

If it is, Trump appointed the presiding kangaroo.

      Isolden in reply to txvet2. | June 20, 2023 at 8:54 pm

you keep saying that. just because “trump appointed” her does not mean she stands for truth, justice and liberty – several of his appointees stabbed him in the back

        txvet2 in reply to Isolden. | June 20, 2023 at 9:18 pm

You’re right. His defining flaw is his inability to hire good people. Too bad that was the reason most of you voted for him in the first place. One would think, however, that you would have learned something from his first term. Obviously, you didn’t. The sad part is, even if he were to win another election, he wouldn’t be any better the second time around, and you’ll still be making excuses for his inability to work well with other, and for his appointees “stabbing him in the back”.

        thad_the_man in reply to Isolden. | June 20, 2023 at 9:47 pm

I haven’t seen anything in her rulings so far that indicates she is being unfair.

As far as that goes, if she were to push through a kangaroo court, the problem for anyone coming in trying to drain the swamp is that swamp creatures are good at hiding their true nature.

Look for example at jordan Peterson. Two people he recently had on are Mike Like and Mike Pence.

      wendybar in reply to txvet2. | June 21, 2023 at 5:48 am

      Say what, horses butt??

Oh, and in case people don’t understand what they’re trying to do, let me lay this out simply for you.

Both Democrats and establishment GOP are terrified of Trump.

1) They secure a conviction. It doesn’t matter on what charge, or whether it actually includes jail time.

2) The establishment GOP scream THATS NOT WHO WE ARE, and NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW, and remove Trump from the primary ballots to prevent anybody from voting him in the primary

3) Even if Trump tried to run independent in the general election, they’ll use the same excuse of WE CAN’T LET A CONVICTED CRIMINAL RUN, and refuse to put him on the ballot.

This entire charade is to try and give enough cover to simply remove him from the election.

CommoChief in reply to Olinser. | June 20, 2023 at 6:44 pm

Almost certainly true. Which makes it all the more puzzling to me why Trump would refuse to be more cautious in dealing with the situation. It isn’t as if this was 2015 and he may not have understood exactly how deep the rot goes or how much the DC establishment and ‘permanent Washington’ hate his ass.

He had an entire brutal campaign then a full four year term facing slings and arrows from all directions. A prudent person would take that experience as a hint that those opposed to him would look for whatever they could find to try and jam him up. The prudent person would not assist his opponents by helping them create the conditions to find the next ‘thing’ to use to jam him up.

Would the DoJ have cooked up something else if they didn’t have the document squabble with the National Archives and the subsequent (alleged) refusal or delay in returning ‘classified’ docs or the potential (alleged) obstruction charges? Maybe, heck probably, but they would have had to find it on their own without the assistance of DJT by his lack of prudence in handling the situation.

“Even if Trump tried to run independent in the general election, they’ll use the same excuse of WE CAN’T LET A CONVICTED CRIMINAL RUN, and refuse to put him on the ballot.”

You mean like Marion Barry, Buddy Cianci, or Alcee Hastings?
Democrats not only let convicted criminals run for election, they re-elect them.

thad_the_man | June 20, 2023 at 7:21 pm

Trial date is neither here nor there. We saw Curtis Reeves trial get rewschuled 5(?) years later.More importantly is the court setting, Fort Pierce, which is AIUI very red.

So good news for Trump.

What happens if Trump wins and fires Jack Smith.

    Mauiobserver in reply to thad_the_man. | June 20, 2023 at 11:54 pm

Hopefully Trump’s attorneys are ready for a speedy trial. Take to trial destroy the government’s case and have the jury deliver a prompt and emphatic not guilty on all counts verdict.

I think that the real AG Lisa Monaco would have a seizure.

MEANWHILE….Blackrock owns the Senate Prostitutes. James O’Keefe strikes again, who knew it was so cheap to buy a Senator??

But let’s put Trump in prison.
