I like DeSantis, but honestly, it feels premature. He’s got a lot more work to do in Florida, and he needs time to groom a worthy successor of himself.

Trump should call DeSantis “The Greatest Governor Ever If He Stays His Entire Term”.

filiusdextris in reply to jhkrischel. | May 24, 2023 at 3:39 pm

There’s work in the White House for him to do to and I’m sure he could benefit Florida far more from the White House than even from the governor’s mansion.

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to jhkrischel. | May 24, 2023 at 4:43 pm

Governor Donald Trump has an interesting ring to it.

natdj in reply to jhkrischel. | May 24, 2023 at 5:09 pm

The irony that very few know here in Florida is that Ashley Moody, our Attorney General has received more votes statewide than DeSantis. The other choice is Byron Donalds. We will be fine once Ron leaves. Oh, DeSantis was also my Congressman so we are use to calling him Ron.

CommoChief in reply to jhkrischel. | May 24, 2023 at 5:52 pm

What are the specific policy issues you believe he needs to address in FL?

inspectorudy in reply to jhkrischel. | May 25, 2023 at 3:43 pm

I think your priorities are way off. Our nation is way more important than FL and DeSantis knows how to work with the legislature to get things done permanently, not temporarily with executive orders. Trump will be an instant lame duck if he wins and if you know anything about DC you know that NO politician wants to stick their neck out for an unpopular project for a lame duck. there is no reward for backing a lame duck because they offer no coattails next election. I see a lot of executive orders again.

Competitive primaries are a good thing. Trump cultists want a coronation and that is never a good thing.

Sad, bitter comment with no redeeming value. The post is about DeSantis, and there is no mention of Trump or Trump supporters. Heard there may be a job opening at Vanity Fair.

I live in a Republican County here in Florida. As a volunteer to register voters (newsflash to some but many of do this and not just Scott Pressler) many Florida Republican voters overwhelmingly want DeSantis to stay as governor. The reason is not what many think. It is simply that many are concerned as to who will take over once DeSantis leaves. Though I support President Trump, DeSantis, if he wins the nomination should be supported 100% by avid Trump voters. Unfortunately, it won’t happen. I truly am concerned about our party and we are way too divided to defeat the Democrats.

Not looking forward to the smear campaign(s) launched against DeSantis by Trump-bots. Campaign slogans and memes from the left – and Trump-bots in particular – already share common and parallel tracks. Those attacks emanating from the right will only grow in intensity – and then be laser-focused by the enemy media. MSNBC will interview the bulwarks of the right – Bill Kristol and David French and Rick Wilson. All mouthing the Slogans©.

The attcks targeting Musk. The old cliche regarding the intensity and volume of propaganda flak increases proportionally as the hate-object nears the center point. Yeah. It’s that.

Smear campaign by DeSantis against President Trump you mean

He and his billionaire buddies plan on helping the FBI finish the job

Kind of like when he didn’t give Melania a heads up so she could hide her undergarments before the trash FBI played with them!

He is a little meatball, all 5’7 of his being

Are you seriously smearing DeSantis’ Italian heritage (“little meatball”) and his . . . checks notes . . . height? Desperate much?

gonzotx in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | May 24, 2023 at 5:52 pm

No I’m stating a fact, he is a meatball, he is 5’7, has that napoleon complex most likely, he’s bought HUGLY and therefore I despise him. Because people will fall for the BS

He’s been handled very well, even fighting the good culture causes, but that’s not who he is…

CommoChief in reply to gonzotx. | May 24, 2023 at 5:48 pm

Please list the smears made by DeSantis against Trump so we are all aware of each and every one of these.

gonzotx in reply to CommoChief. | May 24, 2023 at 6:05 pm

Stay tuned, he’s already blaming President Trump for lockdowns, when each state made their own decisions

The media, Fauci, RINOs, big corporations, Pharma, scarf lady, China-all pushed it

Did he make mistakes, yes, but he was feed false information by our leading scientists 360* 24/7

Last I believe,,he is a businessman, not a scientific expert

        “ we’re all gunna die”

Let’s call it what they want to call it

        “ “The Trump Virus’

It’s all his fault, little did we all know he was in the basement of the WH doing bat virus research putting together coronavirus/bat shit to murder millions and declare a national disaster and take unilateral power…

        Oh, that didn’t happen

CommoChief in reply to gonzotx. | May 24, 2023 at 6:13 pm

Nah I need direct quotes from DeSantis about Trump. You know, like the ones Trump makes against DeSantis and other folks.
          ‘Little Marco’ comes to mind.

If you have those direct quotes by DeSantis that mention Trump by name please go ahead and post them so we can all be alert for them in the upcoming primary campaign

You need to shut the f##k up gonzotx. Every time there is any post about anything positive about what DeSantis is doing, you then have to post your vitriol against DeSantis and your slavish worship of Trump. You need to go crawl back under your rock at Conservative Tree House and stay there. They will welcome you there.

      txvet2 in reply to gonzotx. | May 24, 2023 at 8:09 pm

You’re the one who recently posted a comment describing how DeSantis has been complimenting Trump. (You didn’t like it when I pointed out that this compared to Trump’s insults and smears of DeSantis.)

inspectorudy in reply to gonzotx. | May 25, 2023 at 3:48 pm

God, you are tiresome. The same old crap day after day. Do you ever offer any facts? How many days did Trump serve in the military? How many days did he spend in Iraq? How many jobs did he have to work to get through college? How many wives did he have to marry? How many lawsuits of infidelity did he have to fight?

    txvet2 in reply to Tiki. | May 24, 2023 at 8:00 pm

Yeah, that smear campaign is well underway, led by the usual litany of lies about DeSantis trying to destroy Soc Scty and Medicare – posted by Guess Who.

      inspectorudy in reply to txvet2. | May 25, 2023 at 3:51 pm

It didn’t matter that it was a non-binding agreement on ways to SAVE social security from Democrat spending and taxation. It was never going to be a bill or enacted into law. This is as rotten as the msm calling his child protection act “Don’t say gay”. The Trump crowd is just as nasty and corrupt as anything Hillary ever did.

I believe Kari Lake had the best response given DeSantis challenges with Walt Disney! “If you can’t even beat Donald Duck, how are you going to beat Donald Trump!”

    CommoChief in reply to jrcowboy49. | May 24, 2023 at 5:55 pm

By winning elections in a 19 point margin blowout victory which neither Lake nor Trump has managed so far.

gonzotx in reply to CommoChief. | May 24, 2023 at 6:15 pm

In a job he wouldn’t have if not for President Trump in a red state

By the way, there were other governors that won by even wider margins, same election

      Gov DeWine , 62.4% to 37.4%.
      Is like 25%?

Trumps election was stolen pure and simple, Lakes election was stolen

They will find President Trump guilty , they will perp walk him and America will never come back

Be thrilled with your crickets, fake meat, millions of illegals , open boarders, 15 min cities, and solar panels

Nah I’m good here. I don’t live near a bunch of weirdo progressives or near an enclave of them like Austin or DFW. Got all I need to thrive and like minded neighbors who have all they need to thrive.

Florida is getting to be a Red State that’s true. Since DeSantis was first elected GoP voter registration has grown enormously. Something like a 700K increase.

Back to an election victory so large it was called within minutes of the polls closing which neither Lake nor Trump has yet done in a general election. They may in the future but if so they may have to grow the number of folks registered in the GoP, just like DeSantis did in Florida.

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to jrcowboy49. | May 25, 2023 at 10:23 am

Would this be the same “Kari Lake” who couldn’t even win her election for governor and is now obsessively ranting about how the election for Arizona governor was stolen from her and just had her lawsuit thrown out? That Kari Lake?

And she has the audacity to criticize DeSantis?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA . . . pull the other one . . . it might be funnier. But I doubt it.

A comment above was censored. Interesting and uncalled for.

In any event, the claim that Mark Levin, by interviewing DeSantis, is part of an “Israel lobby” is ridiculous. Levin called Trump the first Jewish president.
He interviewed both DeSantis and Trump. To Trump, on April 23, he said:

“Let me just say this, Mr. President. I’ve talked to a lot of important people: Supreme Court justices, presidents, presidential candidates, brilliant people. And talking with you is really the most impressive conversation I’ve had.”

“Number one, there’s very few people who could sit there and speak the way you do from subject to subject to subject to subject. If people would let you speak and actually listen to you, while you have the enormous pressure on your shoulders of these grand juries and other things going on and you still are able to do it. That is absolutely remarkable.”

Levin also said it will be “up to history” for Trump to get “the credit that you deserve.”

Censorship in favor of one candidate is bad news.

Saw DeSantis’s 2018 commercial that he would be a “pit bull defender” for Trump, among other things. Have you seen it from the governor’s race he would surely have lost otherwise?

Considering the obvious foreseeable harm that will result for both men going forward, what caused the about face? Why would he suddenly act to knock Trump out? Mean tweets? Or is there something deeper going on? Waiting for a cogent explanation of his thinking.

And what is DeSantis’s position on Ukraine?

CommoChief in reply to oldschooltwentysix. | May 24, 2023 at 6:07 pm

Timing mostly. You see Trump was supposed to have been inaugurated in Jan 21 and occupying the WH right now. Unfortunately he couldn’t close the deal and we got Biden instead.

In reality ’24 was always gonna be the moment for DeSantis to step up. If folks are upset about a conflict between them in a competitive GoP primary in ’24 then point your finger at the candidate who is actually off schedule; Trump.

Close the deal? Yeah, he lost an honest and fair election. Please!

The proof is all out there, the election was stolen.

It’s insane people deny it. Just look at Pennsylvania for God sakes

President Trump was winning by 700,000 votes and a toilet overflows ( right )…6 states shutdown,( what a HUGE commode ) Trump was ahead in all 6 states and a few hours later…

        The steal was sealed

The question after DeSantis’s “clarification” is if he will send more money.

It’s hard to push back on crap unless you really know the answer to that fundamental question.

inspectorudy in reply to gonzotx. | May 25, 2023 at 3:56 pm

It WAS stolen so what? Has Trump done anything about it? Has he gotten a group of people like Lake did and fought it? No. He whines about it every day but hasn’t done anything else.

CommoChief in reply to oldschooltwentysix. | May 24, 2023 at 6:24 pm

Ha. No, but nice try to reframe. If you close the deal in an election you get to put your hand on the Bible and be sworn into office. If you fail to close.the deal then you don’t. Simple as that. Trump came extraordinarily close to a huge win with coattails within the context of 2020 hurdles he faced. No one should diminish that effort.

Less than 200K votes decided the Presidency, control of the HoR and control of the Senate. Lots of shenanigans in blue States and blue enclaves on the back of ‘temporary’ changes to voting methods, ballot security and election integrity due to the Covid panic. A panic which ironically his Admin contributed to with actions of Fauci, Brix among others that was the basis for his own electoral failure in very large part. It’s very fair to say that, absent Covid, Trump would very likely be in his second term right now.

gonzotx in reply to CommoChief. | May 24, 2023 at 6:33 pm

Jesus, they just kept manufacturing votes till they got the number they wanted…

Why is that so hard for you?

Reframe? You’re the one that ignored the comment and quipped that Trump could not close the deal, as if that had anything to do with what the comment said

Justify what happened in the 2020 election if you must. Boys will be boys. And then you can actually address the comment, not reframe.

In the end both will be hurt. So what caused the man who made that commercial do an about face? Why would he suddenly act to knock Trump out? Is there something deeper going on?

And what is DeSantis’s position on Ukraine?

You ask (over and over again): “And what is DeSantis’s position on Ukraine?”

Weird flex. DeSantis praised Trump’s foreign policy in deterring Putin’s aggression, and he doesn’t think it’s our fight (no boots on the ground, no more blank checks, no nation building). I’m pretty good with that.

CommoChief in reply to CommoChief. | May 24, 2023 at 6:51 pm

All the shenanigans were possible due to Covid policies. Remember PA keeping GoP monitors out? Remember the d/prog officials putting GoP monitors so far away form ballot handling they couldn’t actually see whether procedures were followed?

Remember ballots being mailed out? Remember all the rest of loosened ballot security rules and how many States and localities ignored the letter of the election integrity statutes?

All that was possible b/c Covid. Now Trump could have directed the DoJ to have every US Attorney intervene to protect the rights of Citizens from totalitarian State govt and municipalities. He didn’t. Instead he took a hands off approach and let totalitarian Gov and Mayors run wild. He criticized multiple Gov who refused to bow to Fauci and his farcical Covid policy recommendations.

Trump could have taken another path but he did not. By failing to do so he set in motion the basis for these blue States and blue enclaves to use Covid panic and the fear mongering of his own administration to alter the elections rules for 2020. The d/prog took every advantage they could and Biden was inaugurated as a direct result.

Yeah. No laptop. No Zuckerbucks. It’s just covid. Perhaps you recall the post-mortems after 2016 where many “democrats” said they would not let it happen again. Irrespective, you are still reframing.

Here’s another one for you not to answer: Do you think having a rubber stamp legislature has any bearing on the success of DeSantis? Would he be as effective if he was dealing with powers that could actually thwart him? He has never had the latter situation to deal with.

Can you state his position on Ukraine?

Oh, one final thing. With all that covid stuff, Trump barely lost, and lost under very suspicious circumstances. So was it really covid? Or maybe it was just rigged? Or maybe, like you fist said, it was just timing. A great reason for a “pitbull” to flip.

“Weird flex. DeSantis praised Trump’s foreign policy in deterring Putin’s aggression, and he doesn’t think it’s our fight (no boots on the ground, no more blank checks, no nation building). I’m pretty good with that.”

And very soon after had to clarify in such a way that his poisition is unclear and remains so.

No, as indicated in the linked materials, that is what his position is after he clarified (only) the “territorial dispute” part. He did not change anything at all; he just said that the focus on that phrase ended up mischaracterizing the totality of his remarks.

This is the same crap that I spent four years defending Trump over here at LI. Everyone insisted on taking one tiny part of what Trump said and pretending it meant something else. I pushed back on that for four straight years (longer if you count my posts post-Trump presidency), and I will push back against it when it’s pulled on DeSantis, too. Or any Republican, for that matter. It’s dishonest and intellectually bankrupt to do this.

CommoChief in reply to CommoChief. | May 24, 2023 at 7:22 pm

You do know I am not part of the DeSantis campaign? I am not even a DeSantis die hard so I don’t understand why you keep asking me about Ukraine. In fact have yet to make any decision about the GoP nomination contest between Trump, DeSantis other than everyone else is whistling in the wind. Possibly with the exception of Vivek Ramaswamy who has some intriguing ideas. I am happy to let the candidates put out their policy ideas for the issues we face today and observe their performance before I get weak kneed and swoon over any particular candidate.

I can paraphrase what I recall DeSantis stating but since it’s less than a couple hours into his campaign I haven’t paid enough attention to quote verbatim. In essence he stated that Ukraine is getting the worst of the fighting, casualties and destruction. It would be a good idea to halt the fighting and dying. The govt of Ukraine are potentially grifters. The US should demand oversight and account of where our tax dollars went and where our donated equipment and munitions are. He also characterized it as a border conflict in Eastern Europe and not vital to US national security. I happen to broadly agree and don’t find it objectionable.

Zuck bucks allowed the d/prog to get ‘unlikely’ voters identified and build a targeted campaign to get these folks to vote in 2020. This is where much of the surprise comes from IMO. We look at classic indicators, trends and polls of likely voters then wham bam where did all these Biden votes come from? Many came from this very much under the radar targeted campaign to get these ‘unlikely’ voters to cast a ballot.

Of course there were lots of other shenanigans in ’20 besides zuck bucks. All have one thing in common; use of Covid panic as the basis for enacting ‘temporary’ changes to the statutory voting system, election integrity and ballot security measures.

Still even with all that as a headwind Trump nearly pulled it off. It was actually remarkable that he was 200K votes away from keeping the WH, holding the Senate and capturing the HoR. Give the man his due he came damn close considering the overall context of the 2020 election.

Everything did NOT have to do with covid. The laptop had nothing to do with covid. Zuckerbucks would have happened even without covid. Turning Trump into a monster had nothing to do with covid. The election was rigged, with or without covid.

As for Ukraine, Trump’s view is quite clear. DeSantis said one thing, then backtracked. It’s an important issue and DeSantis ought to clarify his clarification.

Too hard to follow the comments, so this is the last one.

The question after DeSantis’s “clarification” is if he will send more money to fight the “war criminal.”.

It’s hard to push back on crap unless you really know the answer to that fundamental question.

CommoChief in reply to CommoChief. | May 24, 2023 at 7:54 pm

The zuck bucks were masked in the Covid chaos, which is how it flew under the radar. To a certain degree so was the laptop story but that was definitely a thumb on the scales by DoJ, a biased legacy media and social media, predominantly Twitter, who banned the story and blocked accounts including NY Post.

Ukraine isn’t an issue of importance to the USA. It’s a border conflict between two Eastern European nations each with less than savory Govt and leadership. The only reason it’s an issue is due to the Biden admin sending unaccountable $, equipment and munitions to Ukraine risking a direct confrontation with a nuclear armed power. Of course that doesn’t tough on the damage done to the US Dollar and ripples still emanating from the absurdly foolish but failed attempt to sanction Russia. In particular the seizure of Russian govt assets and attempts to boot them out of international financial settlements. Absolutely stupid.

    Money

They always censor my stuff, he’s bought

The claim of an Israel lobby because Levin is doing an interview was way off.

The censorship was more way off.

As we’ve told you many (many) times, this is not a social media site. Do not “tweet” here, use Twitter. Do not copy and paste other people’s work in our comment section, particularly without even giving the actual writer credit for their words (no plagiarism, in other words).

If you want to comment on something, go for it, you do it all the time with no problem. If you want to say something and provide a link to another source, go for it, others do that all the time. What YOU do is inappropriate and not allowed here. And that is nothing new, been telling you this for a couple years now, but you keep on doing the same things and then complain when you get the same results. There’s a name for that, I think . . .

You seem to suggest that relying upon donors to fund a political campaign automatically means a candidate has sold out to those donors.

If that’s so then since Trump didn’t donate a dime of his own personal wealth to his 2020 campaign and instead relying 100% on donors for funding you are attacking your preferred candidate.

gonzotx in reply to CommoChief. | May 24, 2023 at 7:41 pm

    LOOK at those freaking donors

It’s a who’s who of globalist antiAmerican billionaires and the RINO elites

He’s already got more money than anyone in history running for a President and only 5% is from the little guys where Trump 95% is the little guys

    Do the math

CommoChief in reply to gonzotx. | May 24, 2023 at 8:28 pm

How much $ does the DeSantis Campaign have on hand today, day one of the campaign? How could you possibly have seen the quarterly filings for a campaign on day one?

Over 133 extremely wealthy people gave an average of $285,000 to the Trump campaign. Several gave huge amounts to Trump affiliated PACs. Sheldon Addison gave $90 Million as a single example.

The fact is every candidate takes $ from donors some big $, some small $ and some flipping huge $. Trump isn’t any different in this regard. By and large donors give to candidates who already support the same sorts of policies the donor wants. It isn’t a quid pro quo that makes puts the candidate under an obligation to the donor beyond I suppose hearing out a guy who shoved $90 million into the campaign as Addison did for Trump.

Further, it’s ludicrous to claim DeSantis will feel “owned” by donors. Heck, Disney donated to his campaigns, and he still did the right thing (despite Trump backing woke groomer Disney‘s right to continue woke grooming of little children). Meanwhile, Team Trump has called for an end to the Bud Light boycott BECAUSE of political donations. Who does the bidding of donors? Certainly not DeSantis!

CommoChief in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | May 24, 2023 at 10:29 pm

Trump isn’t into the culture wars and never has been. Issues that resonate in middle America like opposing grooming, Parents rights, no dudes with a penis in the girls locker room/shower/restroom, no men dominating women’s sports, opposition to DEI/CRT, strong 2A backing, letting States regulate abortion according to their own culture… those things are viewed differently by a guy from NYC who was d in blue city for the majority of his life. They aren’t priorities in his milieu so he kind of ignores them.

The man is solid on trade and tariffs, energy independence, strong military and immigration but he doesn’t get the importance of the culture war items at least IMO. Otherwise he wouldn’t jump to defend Disney and Budweiser.

Agreed, and to me that is a deal-breaker with Trump. (If I hadn’t already been done with him when he launched his very personal attacks on DeSantis PRIOR to the ’22 midterms, this would do it.)

inspectorudy in reply to gonzotx. | May 25, 2023 at 4:01 pm

As the nun said to the donating whore, “Money is money”.

And Levin, he swings every which way, he was a big anti Trumper till he could see he would win

Mark Steyn has nothing but negative things to say about Levin.

I will admit I don’t like Levin, don’t trust him, so not hard for me not to believe negative stuff about him, I admit I’m prejudice

Here’s a contest

How many pro DeSantis posts a day will there be going forward?

My guess 2 minimum

CommoChief in reply to gonzotx. | May 24, 2023 at 7:32 pm

When prominent Office holders, especially the sitting Gov of a big State, do something newsworthy that gets coverage. The immediate run up and announcement of a Presidential campaign is newsworthy.

As a sitting Gov DeSantis does hold an advantage over the rest of the GoP field. He is able to make news b/c unlike the rest of the field, except for Sen Scott, he won his re-election campaign and is a current office holder.

When something newsworthy happens, as it likely will now that he’s officially in the race, we will post about it. Just as we have done with every GOP candidate (and many Dem candidates) for every election since the site’s inception. If you don’t like our content, you can find another, more comfortable place that conforms to your views. There are plenty of them out there.

gonzotx in reply to Fuzzy Slippers. | May 24, 2023 at 7:44 pm

Not true, DeSantis gets ALL the love, unlimited, one sided horse blondes kind of teen lust love

      Trump, not so much…

Even Tucker gave President Trump his due, said he opened his eyes to the reality of the world he thought he knew , was part of in the media, and the decisions he made, ones he was so embarrassed about, like Iraq.. he was full in for Iraq apparently

Trump isn’t in office and hasn’t done anything but rant on Truth Social. When he does something or has new criminal charges filed against him or whatever, we’ll cover it. We covered his CNN townhall (and I thought he came off great in that), and we’ll cover other similarly worthy events.

All that stuff you are talking about is in the past. I imagine if an LI writer wanted to write something about Trump’s record as president or whatever, they could. Also, we often do “the case for” type posts as elections draw near, but primaries don’t even start until next year, so it’s early days for that kind of thing.

What a load. This entire website was behind Trump last year, especially after the Mar a Lago raid. The pushback came later, and it was caused primarily by your insistence on making every thread a whine about poor Trump, no matter what the topic.

I think this site is one of the most civilized sites left on the net and it has not gushed over DeSantis but has expressed dismay over Trump’s continuing nastiness and outright lying about DeSantis. I believe most of us voted for Trump twice and will again albeit with my nose being held closed, Most of us think that Trump should have grown up a little and should use his position to push for ways to save our country instead of trying to ruin a good man and his family. We want to win at any cost but not sink to the level of Hillary or the DNC in the process.
