Biden and Obama Suddenly Concerned About Democratic ‘Norms’ After Ouster of Tennessee Lawmakers

“What happened in Tennessee is the latest example of a broader erosion of civility and democratic norms.”

The Tennessee legislature has expelled two Democrat lawmakers over their participation in a mob protest at the state capitol building. A third lawmaker was going to be expelled but was saved by a single vote.

The situation that day was out of control.

Now, two of the most powerful Democrats in the country, Joe Biden and Barack Obama, are suddenly concerned about our sacred democratic norms again. Got that? After years of screeching about insurrections and democracy, as their party pushes a bogus indictment of Trump that looks like something out of the third world, now Demnocrats care about norms.

FOX News reports:

In an extraordinary action, the GOP-controlled body voted to expel Democratic Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson for “disorderly behavior” after they stormed the Capitol building with anti-gun protesters following the shooting at a Nashville, Tennessee, private Christian school that left three staff members and three 9-year-old children dead. A third Democrat, Rep. Gloria Johnson, came within one vote of also being expelled.

While state legislatures hold the power to expel members, such drastic punishment is typically reserved for serious misconduct. President Biden condemned Republican lawmakers for wielding their power against lawmakers who he said were standing in solidarity with 7,000 students and families who had marched on the state capitol to demand gun control legislation.

“Today’s expulsion of lawmakers who engaged in peaceful protest is shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent,” Biden said. “Rather than debating the merits of the issue, these Republican lawmakers have chosen to punish, silence, and expel duly-elected representatives of the people of Tennessee.”

Here’s Biden’s tweet:

Obama actually used the word ‘norms’ in his statement. From The Hill:

Former President Obama late on Thursday said that the expulsion of Tennessee lawmakers after they participated in a gun violence protest on the House floor is a “sign of weakness,” arguing that silencing dissenters won’t lead to progress.

“What happened in Tennessee is the latest example of a broader erosion of civility and democratic norms. Silencing those who disagree with us is a sign of weakness, not strength, and it won’t lead to progress,” the former president tweeted.

Here’s Obama’s tweet:

The absolute nerve of these people.

Democrats are in no position to lecture anyone on democratic norms.

‘Democratic norms’ simply means Republicans are to cave to what Democrats want. If denied, then Dems are justified to commit insurrection under clenched fists and with a bull horn to impose their will.

This Dem tantrum will convince no one except the already convinced..

“the latest example of a broader erosion of civility”
You’ve waged lawfare against your political opponents for six years, stolen 11% of Americans’ wealth and purchasing power, labeled victimized parents as “domestic terrorists,” and held trespassers in a gulag for two years, and you dare to let the word “civility” even come out of your mouth?

“BREAKING: LEFTISTS STORM TENNESSEE CAPITOL”
I wish Jack would use the correct term Democrat, not Leftist.

chrisboltssr in reply to Whitewall. | April 7, 2023 at 5:26 pm

He is using the correct term, you’re using the incorrect term.

Whitewall in reply to chrisboltssr. | April 7, 2023 at 6:23 pm

You need to wise up to what kind of ideological war we are in. “Leftist” leaves a whole lot of Dems free and clear when they are as much a part of this war as anyone. Quiet doesn’t mean uninvolved when pols are concerned. We give them aid when we don’t include the entire spectrum.

Gosport in reply to Whitewall. | April 7, 2023 at 6:47 pm

One doesn’t have to be a Democrat to be a Leftist.

Leftism is a much wider scale disease and includes people like RINOs and antifa who are anarchistic social marxists, not “Democrats”.

Whitewall in reply to Gosport. | April 7, 2023 at 8:58 pm

If the kinds of people you just mentioned go and approach a voting station, who will they vote for? D or R?

          diver64 in reply to Gosport. | April 8, 2023 at 6:28 am

I’ve yet to see a RINO who was an anarchist. They are all big government Marxists not necessarily social Marxists.
Your term “anarchistic social Marxist” makes no sense.

chrisboltssr in reply to Whitewall. | April 7, 2023 at 6:55 pm

No, you need to wise up to the ideological war we’re in. Anytime to you call these Leftists “Democrat” you give them cover for their awful behavior. There are still some small “d” democrats who still believe in America and do not assume anyone who disagrees with them are enemies. Leftists think anyone who disagrees with them are enemies, even small “d” democrats.

starride in reply to chrisboltssr. | April 7, 2023 at 7:04 pm

And not speaking out about their party, remaining silent, and just voting along the party lines, makes them just a guilty as any other leftist/Progressive/Democrat.

Whitewall in reply to chrisboltssr. | April 7, 2023 at 9:08 pm

“There are still some small “d” democrats who still believe in America and do not assume anyone who disagrees with them are enemies.” I know you are right but they are silent because they are afraid of their own, not of us. We should make them confront their own people like they really might believe in America. It is a different paradigm for us on the Right to undertake but that is the way in. Make these “small d”s stand up for once when it matters.

Until then we on the right will just continue our war against adjectives.

healthguyfsu in reply to chrisboltssr. | April 8, 2023 at 12:12 pm

Amazing. chrisnutssr, PP, and the like are the people that are styling themselves as the true conservatives on this board.

The mythos that you ascribe to these small d democrats is truly bizarre and absurd. There’s a reason they are voting Dem for life, and it’s not because they are afraid. It’s because they vote with their labor union’s advice and for the small pocket change money thrown their way. They are just working-class versions of freeloaders.

Martin in reply to Whitewall. | April 7, 2023 at 5:46 pm

Yes. Democrats stormed. Democrat backed Antifa/BLMers rioted, Democrat anti civil-rights scum bags wish to disarm you. Incompetent Democrats purposefully leave Billions of dollars work worth of war material to the Taliban terrorists. Always name them Democrats.

Since the expelling process followed the TN constitution (Art. II, section 12), these expulsions were ipso facto democratic.

All TN lawmakers, included the ousted ones, took an oath to that constitution (Art. X, section 2).

In fact, the rabble-rousers are quite fortunate that national capitol standards apparently don’t apply otherwise they would have been arrested and jailed for “Obstruction of an Official Proceeding”.

January 6, 2017: Obama and Biden show their concern about democracy when they engage in sedition against a new, duly elected president.

These are not democratic men, but Democratic frauds. And Gen Z, so smart, eats it up. Boy, are they in for a surprise if they ever stray.

henrybowman | April 7, 2023 at 5:38 pm

Leading Democrats are pissy because their operatives were apprehended and punished despite their wearing the “colors of the day” — brown shirts.

And here I thought protests aimed at disrupting a legislative proceeding are a dire threat to state. So this wasn’t a protest, protest.

SeymourButz | April 7, 2023 at 5:50 pm

And all of this just detracts from the horror of a left-wing terrorist murdering children and teachers because they were Christians. This is an ideology they support and spread.

But then again, Barry never had a problem with killing children.

The new norm should be removing politicians who routinely violate the Bill of Rights while declaring they are part of a democratic government and not a republic.

BierceAmbrose | April 7, 2023 at 6:16 pm

“What happened in Tennessee is the latest example of a broader erosion of civility and democratic norms.”

Well, yeah. Insurrection-y physical disruption of voting is directly, literally monkey-wrenching democracy.

We’re well beyond squishy variance from “norms”, there. And it’s become a standard tactic, from Code Pink in hallowed congressional halls, to shouting down committee witnesses, to legislators fleeing their state to prevent a quorum for votes they know they’re going to lose, to taunting gun-rights folks before and after blocking them out of access to their reps — that was State, and more “representative” than “direct” democracy.

Also, President Pen-And-Phone would know about eroding democratic norms. And “civility”, but let’s give that to his Riefenstahl produced apprentice. (How does Sith-ing work again?? I can’t follow the new lore.)

Could you provide a trigger warning if yr gonna report either of those guys saying something so clear and true? Maybe some Ultra-MAGATrigger warning if it’s both of them at once.

I banged my head good when I fainted. At least gimmie a chance to sit down first.

Thanks.

You can arrest conservatives but you cannot fire liberals. Interesting

“Obstruction of an Official Proceeding”

That was enough of a charge to get hundreds of patriots thrown into 2+ years of pre-trial confinement (so far) when the left is running the show.

If that’s the standard then breaking their own code of conduct to lead a protest on the floor of the Tenn legislature should have landed them in jail as well as being ejected from the congress. The uncivilized, rabble-rousing “representatives’ actually used a bullhorn on the floor of the house!

It was stupid politics for them to expel the 2 black men but let the white woman stay.

They should have thrown all 3 of them out.

gonzotx in reply to Olinser. | April 7, 2023 at 7:06 pm

    Exact what I thought

    Optics

She deserved to be thrown out, one vote short

henrybowman in reply to Olinser. | April 7, 2023 at 7:29 pm

The white woman denied three times that she “screamed” in favor of the protesters, as the charges were phrased. The cock in the seat of judgment crowed, and it was all over.

CommoChief in reply to Olinser. | April 7, 2023 at 8:52 pm

Agreed b/c it plays into the hype of GoP ‘racism’. Unforced error in communication that will detract from the message and allow the d/prog to hammer their BS about ‘racism’.

      4rdm2 in reply to CommoChief. | April 8, 2023 at 4:30 am

If the white woman had been ejected too the racism cry would have been used as well. Heck, would have been if it were two white women and one black. Not inconceivable that it would have been ‘racism’ if it had been three white women. It would not be inconsistent with arguments made in the past.

        CommoChief in reply to 4rdm2. | April 8, 2023 at 7:05 pm

Maybe you are correct that the false cry of racism would have raised anyway but it is much easier to refute that BS when the penalties don’t end up breaking down on racial lines as they did here.

What are they upset about? A legislative body exercising their lawful powers to hold elected officials to account for their perceived misdeeds? I seem to recall something similar being done recently by our National legislature. It couldn’t possibly be about the party label could it? /s

henrybowman in reply to CommoChief. | April 7, 2023 at 7:31 pm

It doesn’t matter what arguments a communist uses to object.
They are always drowned out by the shoe-banging anyway.

murkyv in reply to CommoChief. | April 7, 2023 at 9:51 pm

Didn’t this thing all get started because a huge majority of the legislature voted to allow armed security in schools?

The gun grabbers obviously want more school shootings and dead kids so they can dance on their little coffins

I received an email from Bowdoin College about this touting Justin Pearson’s personal achievements today. Justin Pearson is a 2017 graduate from Bowdoin. The screed minimized his demonstration that violated the house rules of decorum and supported his efforts. This is why I no longer support my college with funding.

Odumbo’s own words:

“This nation was built on peaceful protest. No elected official should lose their job simply for raising their voice – especially when they’re doing it on behalf of our children.”

But then, Odumbo is a treasonous liar, isn’t he?

Flashback: In December 2020, then-Oregon state Rep. Mike Nearman, a Republican, was expelled from the Oregon House by Democrats. He was accused of helping conservative protesters enter the Capitol. Nearman was prosecuted, convicted of official misconduct & fined thousands.

The expulsion was praised by Democrats & the left.

Love my new home state. Golf clap for the super majority.

Best 3 weeks I spent in a long while—- the state smells like freedom.

If a state government (Wa, Or, Ca) is going to ban plastic straws and outlaw shopping bags, exactly what part of your life do you think have absolute power over?

When those same states empty prisons in the name of justice while criminals run rampant, it’s no longer the politicians fault. Voters have had some many chances to correct these places. I’m cheering for the criminals now to just burn it down.

gonzotx in reply to Andy. | April 8, 2023 at 12:33 am

    Not when votes are stolen

Andy in reply to gonzotx. | April 8, 2023 at 1:51 am

Wa and Ca elections are well beyond the margin of stolen (While OR is close enough cheat, PDX is not, and they have voted for the wrath of God for several decades now. Wa and Ca voted for this in droves.

In Wa, Inslee is declaring war on rural areas that voted against him. Ferguson the AG who will be his successor will REALLY turn up the hate for conservatives- this is the guy who weaponized the AGs office on dissenters.

I bet Danny and JR are upset about this. Way too aggressive for them and their “principles”. What would Mitch do??!!??

If the democrats approve bullhorns in the legislature, the republicans should give it to them at all levels. And give it to the media at press conferences.
We’re in a war; I wish it wasn’t one sided.

I asked a sitting state senator about Congressional codes of conduct and she said they are taken seriously, very seriously. Those three people violated basic rules, two received the ultimate punishment. Simple. What galls me is that there was an immediate hue and cry that they be exempt from this because of skin color. Disgusting.. and totally predictable. Clown world, clown times.

Capitalist-Dad | April 8, 2023 at 10:10 am

It was fun while the Democrat Reich pilloried its opponents as “insurrectionists,” but they hate it when the opposition does it to them. Bleating crybabies like Obama, Biden, Durbin and the rest can dish it out but can’t take it. Welcome to weapons parity, jerks!

inspectorudy | April 8, 2023 at 1:37 pm

As we all know, if Democrats didn’t have double standards, they wouldn’t have any standards at all.
