Six innocent people including three children were murdered Monday at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville by a woman named Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old former student who according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department identified as “he/him” on her social media profiles.
But while the MNPD and the FBI field office in Memphis were processing the scene and beginning their investigation into what happened, the mainstream media were busy pausing their coverage of how things unfolded to do the very important work in making sure Hale wasn’t being “misgendered.”
Here are some of the more noteworthy examples.
USA Today:

CBS News:

MSNBC:

NY Times:

And where do these media outlets get their marching orders? Their woke readers, that’s where:
Yes, because it is so inconsiderate to “misgender” a mass murderer and we should respect their wishes no matter how heinous their actions or something.
In fact, the word “woman” has been slowly disappearing from the coverage that has been published at many of the major news outlets. For instance, I couldn’t find it anywhere on the CNN page that is providing up-to-the-minute reports on what’s been going on in Nashville.
Others are already defaulting to using “he,” “him,” and “his” in their stories on Hale instead of “she” and “her.”
It’s astonishing that this even needs to be said, but “reporting” in deference to a mass shooter’s alleged pronoun preferences outside of noting for the record that’s what they claim, and erasing their actual gender in the process should not be on any journalist’s priority list. Like ever.
