Non-Binary Energy Official Sam Brinton Allegedly Stole Luggage From Las Vegas Airport

Sam Brinton, the deputy assistant secretary of the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition at the Department of Energy, allegedly stole luggage from the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, NV.

“A felony warrant was issued for Sam Brinton, a deputy assistant secretary, sources said,” according to KLAS in Las Vegas. “The charge is for grand larceny with a value between $1,200 and $5,000, records showed.”

The accusation is similar to the charges Brinton faces in Minnesota for allegedly stealing a woman’s Vera Bradley suitcase at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) on September 16.

In that case, Brinton is charged with Theft/Take/Use/Transfer Movable Prop-No Consent. It is a federal offense.

Brinton faces 5 years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.

Brinton has already been on leave “for at least a month”:

Brinton has been on leave from DOE for at least a month, the agency has acknowledged. On Nov. 18, Kim Petry, the acting deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel who has stood in for Brinton, wrote in an email to DOE colleagues that she had been asked to stay on as head of the spent fuel office “for the foreseeable future” by Kathryn Huff, assistant secretary for nuclear energy.“I should have another update for all of you in a month or so,” Petry wrote in the email. That timetable corresponds roughly with Brinton’s scheduled hearing in the Hennepin County District Court in Minneapolis.

I will update this post once officials release more information regarding the Las Vegas allegations.
