Morehouse College students demand more security after car burglariesStudents at Morehouse College in Atlanta demanded increased security after dozens of vehicles on campus property were broken into overnight earlier this week, Atlanta News First reported.Perpetrators smashed car windows and stole valuables from more than 30 cars inside a fenced-in campus parking lot on Webster Street, according to the news outlet. Students say the gate has not locked in years.“They need to up security. They need to fix the door,” Morehouse student Omar Kaba told Atlanta News First. “I mean there’s not much you can do about the fence, but at the very least you can have security patrolling more regularly,” he said.Other vandals broke into cars parked along nearby streets, the CBS affiliate reported.“We pay thousands of dollars to go and to not have some type of security protocols implemented into our school’s dynamic is kind of concerning,” Akeem Muller, a student at the private historically black college, told the news outlet. Campus police are working with Atlanta police to investigate.Morehouse said in a statement that it will boost security by adding “secure parking options, security cameras, and surveillance.”“The safety of our students and employees is our top priority, and Morehouse stands in solidarity with our students and neighbors against crime,” college spokesman Cedric Mobley said in a release reproduced by Atlanta News First. “Our campus police department is working with other local authorities to investigate the cause of these unacceptable break-ins.”
